Nikon 135mm f/1.8 S Plena: A New Era of Bokeh
The Nikon 135mm f/1.8 S Plena has cemented itself as one of the must have lenses for portrait and creative photography with it's ability to produce stunning near-circular bokeh that envelops the entire frame, even at its widest aperture of f/1.8.
The Plena is also the first Nikon lens to feature Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings, which help to reduce chromatic aberration and flare, even in challenging backlight conditions. This makes it possible to capture sharp, high-contrast images with impeccable rendering of subtle skin textures and intricate hair details.
In addition to its exceptional optical performance, the Plena is also a well-built and versatile lens. It features a robust weather-sealed design, making it ideal for use in a variety of shooting conditions. The lens is also relatively lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around and use for extended periods of time.
In this video we hit the streets of Singapore, testing out the lens at nighttime and also how it renders for video, plus I compare it to the Canon RF 135mm 1.8 L IS USM, a fabulous lens in it's own right.

I’ve been consumed with this lens and have been watching Plena coverage from Japanese channels (watching with translated captions). Haven’t been this excited for a piece of gear in a long time.

The Plena vs. the 85mm 1.2 will be a tough debate. I love the 85, it's my favorite portrait lens. But to me, the Plena has a unique look. The bokeh and fall off are next level. I was surprised that you said the Plena was a wash with the Canon 135. I agree that they are close in sharpness, but the 135 Canon is similar to the Canon 85 1.2 and even the Canon 50 1.2 for that matter. All clinical and the Canon colors hold them back. I think the Plena is unique. It has some soul to it.
There will be a lot that go back and forth from 85 to 135 for sure.
The Canon while not having such a pleasing bokeh as the Nikon does have Image stabilisation and closer focusing giving it a bit more versatility. However these are specs, it comes down to system choice and image preference.
Imo this reflects C/N's philosophies. On 45MP bodies, RF135 on R5 suffers from the low pass filter. I believe that Canon will excel in center resolution, whereas Nikon will provide uniformly high resolution across the entire frame without sacrificing peripheral illumination. N just chose to create an iconic character with acceptable sharpness, sufficient for practical use.
Considering RF135 consists of only spherical elements, optical designwise it is unique as well (free of quality control of asph onion rings and assembly; superior in my mind of building a sharp lens compared to 135GM). It also offers single element AF and IS, thought to be "harmful" in producing the top image quality. DIGIC X covers more RF bodies than Expeed 7 does on Z. These features are consistent with RF's general package (IS/better max. magnifications, etc.)
Nikon won't begin with these mechanical factors definitely, lol. Plena is Plena, you distinguish it from others, not only a sharp 135mm.

Interesting to see how round the bokeh is, especially after Gerald Undone did a video on Arri lenses showing how even their most expensive primes have cats eye bokeh. He mentioned how that should influence our standards on photo lenses, but now it's interesting to see the Plena setting a new standard. Without a doubt rounder bokeh than a 30,000 dollar cinema lens.
I also tested the Arri lens for photography as well with the GFX100S, Can check on my channel.
Different rendering but bokeh is only part of the Arri magic. Its also how it renders skin tones etc

When Sony released their 135/1.8 G-Master more than four years ago, it became the sharpest lens in my bag. It might still be. Great focal length and aperture.
Back when I had the a7r4 the 135 gm and the 90mm are the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used. The only lens that went neck and neck with the 135gm was my zeiss 135 apo sonar.

Cool review, thanks a lot! Got mine yesterday, booked a model for tomorrow and will do some testing. Also will be comparing it to the Nikon Z85/1.2, which is almost the same focal-length/aperture-look on APS-C bodies.
What stands out to me for now, is that the bokeh is less hectic/distracting than it used to be on this kind of lenses. Almost all of the very open aperture lenses have a swirly bokeh round the center because of the bokeh-distortions on the edge, the Plena does apparently not. Swirls might be OK, if they are around your subject, but not if your subject/attention-center is not totally centered. Some people call it the character of vintage lenses, but if I want it, I go with a cheap vintage lens - it's a distracting error, not a feature (same with CA).

What a fun review! Really would love to get this lens but I think it's not practical for my commercial shoots. Think it would be great for sports and concerts. Looks like a great lens for the Nikon platform. Honestly I was really hesitant about the focal lens of 135mm for my Sony, until I tried the 135mm F1.8 GM on my A7RV - absolute dream of a combination 😊👍

I have the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM. Recently I have looked at my photos taken with my Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, most of the photos are taken at 2.8 to 5.6, at aperture 2,8 there are plenty of "bokeh" !!! I do not like the big size and weight of the 135mm 1.8, in the spring I got the smaller and lighter Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 and now I rarely use the Sony 135mm 1.8 !!! The Voigtländer 110mm are so good for any kind of photography and it is built like a tank, much better than the Sony. The Zeiss Batis APO Sonnar 135mm 2.8 have a much nicer size and weight.

Great video Bobby! all of the Plena images look brighter, “peripheral illumination” vs Canon lens. I bought Plena when it first came out and waited for months for its release to the world. I was lucky to have received right after shipping date. I couldn’t be happier! It’s a beast in sharpness and bokeh! I work a lot in low lit theaters and nightclubs. It’s just perfect for this application. Whenever and wherever I can, I mount my Plena knowing it’s going to capture stunning images. Thank You Nikon!

the color tone on the plena looks warmer and overall more pleasing. the canon's color looks a bit cold and magenta-ish, not sure if there is some wb variation but that's what I saw.

Bobby what would you recommend at this point? Nikon Syztem or Son,y? Sony has a 135mm lens as well.
Depends on your needs. Nikon has definitely made strides especially in their tech, lens lineup and cameras. Sony is more mature in the mirrorless space. What I like about Sony is the system is more compact overall. Lenses and camera bodies are noticeably more compact which makes it easier to carry around. However Sony doesn’t really update their cameras that much so many of the newer features are given to new cameras and the top end cameras barely get substantial firmware updates.
With that said what I appreciate about Nikon is the upgrades they provide that are essentially mark II versions of a specific camera at no charge.
The push for better optics in all their lenses, sometimes at the behest of size
Their history and tapping on that like the new Zf.
Color science
Video performance now on the Z8 and Z9 bests the Sony consumer cameras.

The Z9 is larger but the Z8 is very close to the RV in many ways. I think at this juncture you gotta go with what feels good in your hands and features you will use more.

Both are fantastic lenses but render a bit differently. One may say the 85 is slightly sharper but the bokeh on the Plena is just different. I prefer it more to the 85, but an 85mm is more versatile

Very tough decision. I find both of them absolutely stellar. The Plena to me is really special. Just depends if you are comfortable with a 135 focal length

@@btonelli You're very welcome (as always). Yes, the 200 f2 is massive, heavy, built from steel, and not ergonomically right (poor foot, focus collar in the wrong place - where your hand sits). That said, as an amateur photographer a handful of years, it's the one lens that consistently gets me excited about shooting. The look of the images appears to be very close to the 135 PLENA. I had been wondering about how close the 135mm would be...and let's face it, once you need a walkie talkie to communicate with the person posing, adding another 1/2 mile isn't that much ;-) I completely understand why you'd go with the 85mm. Someday, in the future, I'll seriously consider one of them. Appreciate your efforts, as always. PS: Enjoyed the "warrior" in ya.

Its a hard decision for me to pick between 85 and 135 Z. It will be used for in studio talking head. So i'll probably go for the 85... but that 135 to use for "fake" macro would be extreme fun..

Nikon is doing really well, just two things they need to do. Make smaller lenses and fill out their shorter prime focal lengths. In regards to the Canon 135 they both are really good.
Now the decision making comes Plena or 85 1.2; not that the lens will be available (other than a couple here and there to meet the "late Oct" shipping mis-promise) in Canada for months and months. But wow that's another mighty fine lens in the Z lineup. Loved your experience in the shop! Cheers.

Looks amazing. For other platforms, make sure to check out the Samyang (or Rokinon) AF 135mm F1.8. And for those on a budget keep an eye out for a good deal on the older manual Samyang 135mm F2 for full-frame and APS-C. I have the latter on a Fuji body and the quality is incredible.
Haven’t tried the Samyang but heard good things about them.

I liked the review and the variety of shots you gave us. Aside from the bokeh, the contrast also seem to be different than other Nikon Z Lenses. I use the Nikkor Z 105 MC macro lens for Portraits etc and I feel like they have some similarities in terms of sharpness and contrast, but Plena has some intangible quality to it, which I can't describe.
Thank you. Yes the contrast is slightly less I feel from other Nikkor lenses. It does share some characteristics to the 105 but it has this gentle fall off to a very clean circular bokeh. Quite unique when you photograph with it. It’s special and haven’t used anything like this. Even the Otus doesn’t have this type of bokeh

I’ve tried that lens. It’s very different. The bokeh on this is more circular and edge to edge brightness. Also this lens is sharper on the focus area

Out of which system?? There are many I like right now.
Nikon I have to say this lens and the 85 are my absolute favourites for primes follows by the 50 f1.2.
Leica: 35 SL APO and 50 APO
Fujifilm GF 55mm f1.7 and 110 f2
Hasselblad 80 1.9 and the 38 and 55
Canon: 135 f1.8 and 85 1.2
Sony: 50 1.2 and 70-200 f2.8 GM II

@@btonellihow does the RF 85 f1.2 compare to the Nikon? Have you noticed any differences in AF performance on bodies like the R5 vs Z8/Z9? And how do the 85's stack up to the 135's?
I owned the Sigma 135mm f1.8 and then the Sony 135mm f1.8 GM when I shot Sony (A7RIV). They had incredible compression but I found the fixed 135mm a very difficult focal length to shoot with.
Difference in AF isn’t much at all to be honest. Nikon has done some solid updates to close the gap.
Hard to compare the two as they render slightly different. The RF might have a bit more contrast and slightly less sharper? I mean slightly.
@@btonelli do you prefer one over the other in terms of rendering? Or between the two 135's and the two 85's? The RF 85 has been widely regarded as one of the best portrait lenses of all time (I own it and love it) but with the Plena design and "perfect" bokeh balls of some of the Nikon lenses I'm wondering if it is a noticeable difference in bokeh/rendering that makes you prefer the look of one over the other(s). Nikon is the only brand I've never shot with but with the release of the Z8 and their lens lineup I've been very interested in the brand.

Is it just me or the screen of the z9 look blue tinted like most led screen?
It’s slightly different but there is a color and lighting to take into account. It’s not like that in person

It's a great lens. But I have two issues with it: 135mm is too long for me (would want a 105mm f1.4) and it's just too expensive. The Sony 135mm f1.8 version can be had for half the price and is also amazing (have Nikon and Sony cameras).
Fair points. I could see a 105 1.2 Plena come into the picture. Much like the DC range of the past.
The Sony is great, but to be honest this is a better lens considering.
@@btonelli Probably great for people that like 135mm (I don't). Indoors I usually cannot get far enough away from my model with this lens and outdoors I need a megaphone to talk to my model. Unfortunately 105mm f1.4 lenses are rare (there's only the huge Sigma and the old Nikon F lens).

I love how companies can come out with these lenses and all of a sudden everybody acts like its a new concept to make a 135mm at f1.8 aputure, "King of Bokeh" lol what died on that hill to give it that title? Another 135mm f1.8??? As if sigma didnt introduce it years ago. But we overlook it because it isnt "shiney and new" this is what I despise about the youtube tech community. This lens has been around for years! Cheaper and sharper at that, at nearly half the price! LOL
Actually what makes this lens special is the consistent bokeh from edge to edge, no vignetting and constant sharpness throughout the frame.
The other lenses are good, this one is just unique. I’ve tried them all and found this to be different.

With these lenses it isn't about sharpness, it's about smooth bokeh falloff, character etc...

Bokeh? I have been shooting pic for over 50yrs, and never heard the Term until about 2 yrs ago, and Quite Frankly, really don't give a Rodent's Rectum about the Out of Focus areas. I am more concerned about getting the In Focus areas sharp.
Well this is sharp where you need it and has great fall off and background blur if you want it.
In the portrait at 10.20 minutes, in my opinion, there is no focus on the eyes- because of this, it is difficult to understand the exact sharpness. Again Nikon misses the focus on the eyes!

I know photography is expensive but the prices Nikon charges for some of their Z lenses is not funny anymore. In Europe we have to pay 3000 Euro. That is 3264 USD if I check the latest exchange currency rates. I will stick to my Sigma 135mm 1.8.
Yes lenses are getting a bit pricey to be honest and creeping into a territory that makes it unattainable for some. Best to look for a mint second hand one
Do you really need aperture 1.8 for a 135mm Lens !? Recently I have looked at my photos taken with my Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, most of the photos are taken at 2.8 to 5.6, at aperture 2,8 there are plenty of "bokeh" !!! I do not like the big size and weight of the 135mm 1.8, in the spring I got the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 and now I rarely use the Sony 135mm 1.8 !!! The Voigtländer 110mm are so good for any kind of photography and it is built like a tank, much better than the Sony.
1.8 helps with low light and more depth of field if you are in a location and need to really blue out the background.
Sure we don’t need 1.8 all the time and for me I tend to be fine with 2.8 etc but if I want to really isolate a subject or person or want some good foreground blur I like it.
Everyone will have their own tastes and for some it’s not necessary, but when I was photographing in the bar, even 1.8 I had to crank up the ISO. 2.8 -5 would be too difficult
@@btonelli That is an extreme situation you describe, I would never go to a bar with my gear ! If you had the Zeiss Batis APO Sonnar 135mm 2.8 it has optical stabilizer in the Lens. It is also still allowed to use a tripod, even if is only is a pocket tripod. 1.8 to 2.5 is only one stop, so not a big deal to crank up the ISO !
@@cameraprepper7938 understand. I get it. It’s a 1.8 and you can stop down. It’s there when you need it. Like having sports car. Most won’t ever drive to the full potential of the car, but some like it for the potential and also the performance.
@@btonelli I have have had the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM since it came some years ago, I have rarely used aperture 1.8 and I do not think that image taken at 1.8 with a 135mm look pleasing, hence my use of (2.5) 2.8 to 5.6, what I really do not like with the 135mm 1.8 is the size and the weight. Now I am very happy with my Voigtländer 110mm. If I was to get a 135mm today, then the Zeiss Batis 135mm will be the first choice !
The Voigtländer 110mm is sharper at 2.5 and 2.8 than the Sony 135mm !!! The Voigtländer is an overlooked gem, but many are "scared" to use manual focus, I do manual focus 99.99% of the time because I want the focus to be exactly where I want !

You need to try 135mm f2 DC to see who is king of bokeh. Plena is overpriced.
I’ve also heard good things but the AF motors are prob better in the Nikon version vs the older Sigma
@btonelli Well, 135mm F2 DC is not a Sigma lens. It's a Nikon lens. I thought you would know that. There is only one in the world lens that has a DC option. It stands for defocus control. That means you can blur background even more than normal lens. In terms of AF motor, yes, it is a srewdrive lens, but I have no problem using this lens and getting sharp images. The lens is amazing and cheaper than new plena.

Essentially one can't tell where the photo was taken, inside a studio, by the pool, in the city, by a dumpster, sorry but this much bokeh is useless.
True to some extent but you can always stop down to see more of the surroundings. However if you want your subject isolated or in a location where the surroundings aren’t ideal having this type of lens takes away the distractions.
I agree with taking away distractions, but some of that distraction gives context, or at least an idea of the location, and not only OOF colorful discs, and smooth unrecognizable color shapes, and if we're going to stop down, then what is the point of buying a f/1.8 135mm lens in the first place. I think bokeh is blown out of proportion, and lens manufacturers are selling what the hype is dictating. Imagine traveling 5,000 miles to a different country and culture, only to take completely OOF photos. What would be the point? I hope you can see my point of view. Thanks for the reply.
@@karimnasser6886 I definitely see your point and agree to some extent, but for a lens like this it’s really meant for isolation of a subject and the pleasant bokeh that comes with it. Think of it like an artisan lens. It won’t be for everyday or for everyone but for those that want the uniqueness it offers it delivers.
Plena - big, heavy, expensive with a stupid focal length. Too long for portraits, too short for tele work. Too expensive.
Some love the lens, some like yourself don’t see the need for it. No right or wrong just preference.
Bokeh is overrated.
To some and to others they enjoy it.
