PJ has done 6 truly great albums, I can't think of too many artists who've achieved that. Always progressive & compelling, & a very sexy entrancing west country lass just to top it off. Has been one of my favourite artists for almost three decades & look forward to whatever new direction lies ahead.
This is an awesome performance of Yuri-G. I really wish I'd have been into her around when this album came out (for that matter, a little older, too). I like the intensity of this song.
I just read a quote from PJ that she would like to have children if she met a MAN who she was deeply in love with. She dated the first drummer of the band and the was with Nick Cave for a time. I have been a long time fan and never heard the lesbian reference before.
I believe Yuri G is the person the narrator thinks s/he is when s/he is high (esp on morphine) and the way that Yuri G is much more attractive to his/her mind than s/he her/himself is when s/he is not drugged, and also how s/he would like to just simply become Yuri G forever, and so the dependency continues.
@ovarcitizen She bares a strong resemblance to a young Elinor Donahue, the actress who portrayed Andy Griffith's girlfriend before Helen Crump. Prior to her appearances early in the Andy Griffith TV series, Elinor Donahue also played the eldest daughter in the TV series featuring Robert Young, "Father Knows Best".
Too bad there isn't a video version of the tense, raw performance found on '4-Track Demos'. The violin and slide guitar add so much. This version seems tame in comparison.
How I always interpreted: While heartbroken, she wishes she could make the moon her lover (Hey there Luna/she's so white, she's so clean). She went to a drug dealer, who has a parallel imagery as a witch doctor (told by doctor, make a figure, needles stick in her, she'll be your Luna). She then injects herself, alternate image of a voodoo doll. While tripping, it is just her alone with the moon, like Yuri Gagarin, and she wants that back (I thought I was Yuri G, bring back my memory)
Why are the vocals SO MUCH LOUDER than everything else? I can hardly hear the bass or the guitar. Worn out VHS? or was JBTV just *really* bad at mixing?
@slagette ummm.. i seriously doubt its about that "yuri g"... the rest of the lyrics would make no sense. the song is about Yuri Gagarin who was the first man to go into outer space. which makes sense because the song is about her obsession with the moon.

Such an underrated song. The rhythm changes are nuts.
What I like so much are just the choices PJ makes - little bits of structure changes and intonation of lines. Fascinating
It's what makes it hardest to write like her.
No one plays guitar quite like her, either.
Jamming out to this on July 20, 2022... what a treasure!
I love you endlessly, Polly Jean
She is nothing short of a dream.
Ugh so much fucking greatness here. Power trio heaven. Drummer singing and pulling of such complicated beats.
PJ Harvey's best song ! really difficult to play on drums like any track of Dry
This was from rid of me right?

she's got me soooo mesmerized
*sigh* I fucking LOVE this woman! FOR YEARS! That is all.
HAD to listen to this song for tonight's solstice eclipse!
This is total kick ass. Polly Jean is all that and a bag of chips, Rob Ellis is a beast. Great power trio.
I love this woman!
I saw her live two time back in the 90's....She had the power of a nuclear power plant!
always loved PJ Harvey, always will...
Have loved PJ ever since she came out...
What a gem!
Hello Chicago! It's Yuri Gagarin!!
Yeah!
Always loved this first band of hers---- the first two albums- fantastic group----- kind of wished she'd kept this line up -----
God damn it lady
I have no idea wtf this song is about, but i love it!
my favourite PJ Harvey track from my favourite album of hers.
probably my favorite song of hers.
The drummer is pretty good too
на барабанах Роб Эллис. лучший в своём деле!
completely flawless.....
She's the woman I'll grow old with! :)
@sco8d becoming a legend? She's been legendary since the early 90s, at least !
My fave off the album
you are amazing as usual.
thank you.
She just oozes sexyness...
♥️🇮🇪🤙
oh. fuck. yes.
Better live than on record
Super Rock woman!
I always lust after fender Jags, but especially ones that have been on Polly's belly.
Hey there - oh my
The brits are the best

Jurij Gagarin
Wow she puts me into orbit
Great song but GUITAR MUST BE LOUDER
@ovarcitizen i understand you completely
@leztuesday Haha, and what about Yuri Gagarin - the first man in space??? I think HE is the mening of Yuri - G.

I'm quite fond of Polly Jean Harvey
I read somewhere once, back then, where she said she believed herslef unattractive...I begged to differ, in a serious way...
i wonder what happened to her earring?

I think the opposite is true. The 4-track version is tentative and sloppy.
LOL @ the guy at 1:30-1:32
I didn't know that Yuri meant lesbian in Japanese, but it's beyond irrelevant. This shit's a heartbreaker.
*Rid Of Me :'0

makes sense because Luna is spanish for moon
hahaha! not its about yuri gagarin the first human in space. but who knows? maybe she was in love with uri geller or something ^^
lol uri geller?
For real. I thought she looked badass with thick eyebrows.
I’ve never seen Polly play a Jazzmaster before...😀
