- With a 1980s vibe from the start in the style of the documentaries of the time we take a closer look at British Rail’s Railfreight sector including Speedlink and on through the years to privatisation. In this special 3 part series I use my collection of models and stock to help tell the story of this period. Whatever you might think of the shameless selling off of publically owned services after BR still turned a profit despite political discrimination, it certainly produced interesting and varied liveries.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Oh yes, early 30's. Trip to the signal box, all the attractions. To be honest I was surprised Jackie still wanted to hang around with me after that! But she did, and always came with me to any event I attended (I did the same for her too, of course - her "bag" was aircraft).. Wherever we went was together. There were quite a few of this type of celebrations around that time wasn't there - I wonder how much was down to Chris Green.......

Brilliant video Mike, your combination of informative and well put together videos are always my favourite. I used to train spot at Fareham and used to love seeing the 56,s on the ARC stone traffic. I also used to cycle to Botley to see a rare 37 with some Yeoman hoppers as well.

Nice subject and video Mike, I really like the Railfreight livery and have collected several locos over the years which I now look back on fondly and smile (not least because of the prices we paid compared to now) Bachmann 20s and 37s, ViTrains 37s and 47s, Hornby 56s (cracking locos, heavy and sound fitted), and a Heljan26 and 58. Wagons are mainly sliding door box vans. Looking fwd to Part 2...
Thanks Paul, I'm so glad, the uptake on this video is rather low compared to the effort of making it all. So it's great to hear from someone who really "gets* the subject. Agreed on the prices, just seen the Heljan 28 £200 not even new tooling and the new Hornby black 5 looks like being nearly £300. What the hell is going on....
Even though any video that includes class 20s & 08s (not to mention the 56) will automatically command my attention, this is an excellent watch & listen (both narratation & sound effects). Looking forward to the next instalment. Your locos look magnificent!

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Luckily, my driving "career" to date has been limited to 3 preserved locos on Heritage Lines (Castle Class "Defiant, a LMS 8F and the only surviving GC 04). But like you, I was COMPELLED to buy models of each. Total madness!!

hello Mike, great video, the class 20s were successful due to the design, unlike the cl15 and 16 by NBL because the clowns never tested them properly on a loadbank or loaded test before handing them over to BR, i believe overheating was the main problem. remember the first cl 59s as was at southall at that time and they came through
Thanks for the info! I think they were just underpowered really where as the 20s had more to spare within they type 1 classification. Of course EE were just great at what they did
Very, very interesting video. Excellent sound and some nice eye-level shots. I knew nothing about this. I did ride in the cab of an 08 while shunting at Filton in the 1960s before Bristol Parkway was built. Was sectorisation really a good idea? I remember reading Gerald Fiennes views on reorganisation.
Hi Roderic, glad you are enjoying these :) Looking at it from my view point of view. BR was put under massive pressure to change and adapt while at the same time being very unfairly treated by the political masters. Initially Speedlink then Railfreight was great and flexible, however the next generation of sectorisation was really good. But it did not stop there of course. The government saw it was doing well and the rail system we had all paid for was then sold off bit by bit, we never saw a bean or had any say. The period after was a mess to be honest, with any bod able to set up and run trains.

Excellent production. Reminds me of being a boy watching the NSE units. I love the southern railway and it's operation but it can certainly get a bit monotone. Green locomotives on green coaches with green parcel vans passing green EMU's through the green countryside... The 80's certainly added a splash of colour, and large logo is perhaps one of the smartest liveries in grey or blue. I see GBRF's 50's are to get the livery again. Perhaps the last great era of the locomotive during this period.
Hiya, oh I think you are right, the large logo was a masterpiece as was red stripe. Hard at work on episode 2, each one seems to take four days to film 📽️ should be a nice set once finished. Did you like the 80s style intro?

I live in North Derbyshire many of these locos ran though my area doing the coal runs until 1992. The locos used were Class 56, Class 20, Class 31 plus the Hunslet that belonged to Avenue Coking Plant and chemical works ( 1956-1992) further down from the works was a huge sidings that often had MGRs wagons waiting to be taken to the plant or to the local coal pits. The Avenue and the sidings are now long gone the mainline is now mostly passenger traffic . I think getting rid of British Rail was a big mistake I have never known a country that has gone backwards in every way.
Hi Peter, wow you were in the thick of it there, I bet there were times you never thought it could end. I absolutely agree with your observations, and the public still don't seem to understand BR belonged to us and those government thieves sold it off and broke it without so much as a nod to us. Grrrr don't get me started lol

So many nice loco and wagon liveries from this stretch of railway history. The return of colour and variety to the scene after the relatively dull period up to the end of steam and into BR blue monotony
A VDA with spoked wheels? Not complaining just spotting things... presume it had a wheel swap?

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited seen real wagons in preservation here where they've obviously run out of good wheel sets and had to resort to having one each disc and spoked. Or even worse two slightly different sizes of wheel so it looks a bit wonky.

Class 58 was a disappointing design based on the US platform! They had a similar performance of class 56 on paper? The next attempt at building a locomotive was even worse in class 60, sadly paving the way for imported designs!
Yes, not great but interesting. I think the 60s were way ahead of their time and we badly let down by the electronics
