Would you keep Obi Toppin if you were the Pacers?
I would for sure keep Obi because he is a good player and fits the chemistry of how the Pacers want to play as well as the type of character players they want to build their roster to be for a long time.
But, I don't think they will keep him because of him getting a bigger offer they will have to match which most likely will give him the chance to get much more playing time and I think he will prefer that situation rather than his minutes diminishing more and more with the Pacers giving them to Mathurin, Walker and others.

They should keep Obi. He's the best dunker in the league. He is a fan favorite and Obi and TJ are really good together. Having the best bench in the league won them two series in the playoffs. Obi got better this year. He gets lost defensively but he is working hard on it. His shooting was consistent. He is fun to watch. You dont let those guys go. Move Jarace to the three. That's where his fit is. keep both and find minutes for both.
I don't mind keeping Obi as long as he's willing to prove that he'll get better on defense an consistent on offense. I rather get rid of it Jalen and Sheppard tbh

I enjoy obi. He is good and young. Great offensive player. Not the best option on defense. Could possibly become better though. He can rebound. Possibly be a backup 5, which if that would be the route they go, id lime to see that. But that could also open up more issues. My final opinion on this is to open up time for Jarace Walker. Obi is a contract i would understand letting go of. Without his contract and Smith, that opens a kittle for a better defensive 4-5.
Had they not traded for Siakam you definitely bring him back but you have to let him walk and give jarace those minutes
Slight pushback on Toppin's defense in the playoffs. He got beat a couple times late in game 4. He also played about 17 consecutive minutes at the end of that game and held up for the most part. The Pacers scored 19 points in the 4th quarter and 0 in the final 3:30. TBF Obi was a part of the offensive struggle but I don't think calling out his defense b/c he got beat a couple times late in isolation is fair. if you don't score you wind up giving Tatum, Jrue, and Brown WAY too many chances to beat you. Toppin held up pretty well. The Pacers didn't score and had no margin as a result.
I would keep him if he agrees to a reasonable salary to let the team grow more and keep coming off the bench. I think he’s more than happy in Indiana where they at least gave him a chance and developed more of his game and more years only maybe more. He’s athletic enough to do some great things. When he thinks or overthinks it can get dicey. He may struggle a lot with modern defensive switches and assignments as a result. But his raw ability to grab alley oops and rebounds should keep him plus he’s become a spot up shooter at the arc. I’d trade Smith if we need space as his value is still uncovered a bit and I think his temperament is a bit challenging at times. Obi is infectious with good spirit and cheer.
Agreed. I like Jalen too but he had some back issues. And he was terrible in the playoffs. Jalen needs an opportunity somewhere else and the Pacers will need to move him to get under the first apron.

I don't expect Obi to be back if/when they re-sign Siakam . I imagine they want to give Walker more time next season and Obis role would be a fine starting point. You also need to find time for Mathurin and Sheppard to play. Its not good to pay 2 bench guys a larger portion of your cap and I'd rather keep McConnell at this point.

@@jdek88 This season was basically his entire career thusfar. He didn't get meaningful minutes with the Knicks. I've seen steady improvement in his game so far with the Pacers, and I'll bet he could become a better defender when he masters the system here.
I think Obi Toppin is too soft. Played like a good student during big games. They need more Muthurin type of players.
