- Shell texturing is an incredibly powerful yet simple graphics technique for rendering fur and other complex volumes!

Thanks for watching!
This video is dedicated to my friend, Alotryx. - Věda a technologie
Watching this without sound is unreal
Yoo I was thinking that exact same thing.
Additionally
Unreal? 🤓 Well actually it's made in Unity!

Shorts like this are actually really good. Quick rundowns on techniques to say "this exists" that helps me know what I don't know.
Except there’s not a single sentence on how it actually works (even high level)
@@HogarTheBig That doesn't matter. It gives me something to look into that I didn't know existed before. I'll learn how something works from documentation rather than a CZcams short.
@@HogarTheBig You can click the play button shaped thing on the bottom and go to the full video that this is cut from
you have singlehandedly gotten me into graphics programming

Was surprisingly easy to implement, really cool stuff
I am quite proud of that I came up with this technique myself in my early teens. And that's 20 years ago when information was far from the way it is today
why you gotta give me ptsd with the thumbnail
Where is it from?
You shouldn't be getting ptsd off of a thumbnail, but I guess... you're not perfect.
@@GrandHighGamer who
Imagine seeing this on a kids show
same thing. that guy is horrifying
Bro I've literally been losing my mind over this after seeing it in genshin IT LOOKS SO GOOD
The modern equivalent of shell texturing would be parallax occlusion mapping which is still used in lieu of displacement today.
I feel like the artifacts could be used to get that 2000’s era vibe.
I agree.
Is that background music from pokemon diamond and pearl?
Lol Courage nostalgia😂
Is this the same thing as parallax occlusion mapping (POM)?
Ah nvm, it’s not. Just the screenshots shown and the side effects of high angles made me think of POM.
When over 1000 people are willing to give you a thumbs up but only 20 or so are willing to comment ❤
Thanks, I learned something new about SOC

I use this on roblox for hair in my games because I can't poly model hair to save my life.
Okay wasn’t the dark souls one a bad example because it was a messed up implementation? I think there’s a fix out that corrects how the rendering should be on the fur
I did this for fog
bruh
Ok and what is it? Like… what is a shell texture? I feel like we glossed over that part
you would love the full video explaining shell texturing that this short is a supplement to
@@Acerola_t i mean, fair, but like, couldnt you squeeze in 4 seconds of “shell texturing is several layers of textures that form shells around an object” so i don’t have to google it after watching the video? Cause this didn’t make me go “wow i should find out more from this guy, his explanation was really good” and instead made me think “wow, i still have no clue what this is, better ask someone else”, you feel me?
@@Joshinken mmm no seems like everyone else got it just fine i think it's a you problem sorry
But acerola
"*Archaic* graphics technique"
"Also here's a bunch of recent high-profile games that use it..." lmao.
yes, archaic means old, the technique is old, just because new things use it doesn't make it not old
Could you make a video about aliasing and anti-aliasing cause if I turn it on and of in the options. I often don't see the difference.
Look at the edges of things, that's where it'll have the biggest impact. The simple, low performance, high quality method is supersampling, which basically renders at a higher resolution than the display and downscales to the display size. More performant yet lower quality techniques use post-processing methods like edge-smoothing or even using AI.
