  • Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is an incredible medicine to take for a variety of chronic health conditions. Here I share my 5 year experience with it for Hashimotos. MORE⤵
    If you are new here, welcome! My name is Holly. I've been taking LDN since 2016 for my autoimmune disorder, Hashimotos. In this video, I share with you my personal experience with it, what it's done for me and my chronic pain issues, what it's done for my autoimmune condition and some important things to keep in mind. I also share with you where you can get it prescribed, if you doctor doesn't want to help you with it. Also, side note - I was under the weather while recording this. I hope it isn't too obvious.

    Currently, this seems to be the best deal around. So the prescription they offer is 4.5mg, 30 doses for $45 a month. I think that price is really great. It would last me a lot longer than a month, because I only take 1mg a day! You would likely take less than the 4.5mg as well when starting out, so the prescription would last quite a long time. They also have a coupon right on their site: LDN15 for $15 off and a free online doctor consultation. I have not used their services yet, but I may do so in the near future.

      Hello, this has been a very encouraging video. Your skin looks amazing. I would love to see your dosing video. I'm 2 months on ldn for pain mangement. I started out with 2 mg and had to cut it in half . 1 mg am and 1 around noon. I also couldnt sleep on it, so I switched to days. At first I would get a surge of energy and pain was there but it took the edge off where I was able to walk and move around better. I have spondylothesis and spinal stenosis. I had decompression surgery in 2021 and the surgery didnt help one bit. They put a couple of sutures to hold my spine together. When i consult with my orthopedic Dr he said my spine looks good. I've gone to another surgeon for a 2nd opinion. He said it looked fine. I went to another pain management dr. and had another mri and he said I have some bulging disks and that might be the problem. However, I've had those slight bulging disk forever. My physical therapist and chiropractor think its muscularskeletal. I've had epidurals, rhizotomy, and nothing has take the nerve pain away in my feet, calves and thighs away. I feel like i have short leg syndrome and it's so difficult walk. I went to see a standford pain doctor and she recommended Ldn. However, she doesn't know much and prescribed me 4mg off the top. I had done research before taking it and reduced it to 2mg. I also called the pharmacist and they recommended I lower the dose. Before it was making me anxious and I felt all over the place. So now I'm on 1 mg am 1 around noon and 1 around 5. It seems to help slightly
      But I feel it where's off . When I take it I feel energy and less pain for a couple of hours. It does make me sleepy after a few hours. My question is, will I eventually feel less pain naturally . Or does it reduce the pain while I'm on it sort of Iike taking norco. I also went through a phase last month where the pain got worse and I called a neurosurgeon to make another appointment. What they really want to do fuse my back and I'm to scared ¹to do it. I'm 69, Gluten free and beleive I'm physically fit for my age. I was doing yoga, Barre work, pilates and stretching etc. Now, I'm doing pool therapy but this pain is slowing me down. Are you still taking the ldn. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. BTW, I'm just starting to watch your videos!

    This is great!! Yes, I have a question. Everything I have seen about LDN, links it to “compounding pharmacies”. Does that mean I can’t get my script filled at a regular pharmacy? If this is the case, I’m assuming LDN won’t be covered under insurance. If it isn’t, is it expensive?
    And…Thank you!! FINALLY, someone who explained this medication so well I fully understand it! Spent so much time watching, reading, listening about LDN and still had no clue what it was or how it worked. Well done! And just in the nick of time since I am speaking to my doc about it in the morning! Phenomenal job!! Very grateful!!

    One thing about LDN is if you suffer from an autoimmune condition like fibromyalgia CFS/ME that requires pain management with opioids don’t take before you detox from the opioids medications because this will send you to the hospital with low blood pressure and chest pain and sweating cold and my potassium levels were on the floor. I took half of the prescribed 50 mg, just to make sure my body wasn’t going to react, thank Goodness for that, if I would’ve taken the 50mg I wouldn’t have woken up the next morning. I had to wake my husband to take me to the hospital asap because I could feel my blood pressure very low since I’m a nurse I’m always cautious about medications. Also you’ll need to find out the right dose for yourself and don’t mix opioids or any strong pain medication with LDN!!

My alcoholic patients, taking 50mg daily, never complained of being wired, and some of them complained of feeling sleepy. .. ... ..... ... .. Trazodone is okay, but I know it is not great. You might try 5-HTP 100 mg at bedtime + Mg glycinate. Trazodone hangover usually goes away in 3-4 days. I have been on it for autoimmune diseases for many years. I started with .5 and stopped when I reached 1.5ml when I tried 2ml it did not agry with me. I make my own putiing 1 pill in a 50ml marked jar and use a bulb with markings on it to take out 1.5ml. Costs me $25 for 60 pills which lasts me around a year. Cant beat that. I take it 1 hour before I want to sleep. If I take it close to sleep time it does not help with my sleep.
    I am now looking into the dose and use for cancer. Saw a video that said one should take high doses of D3. with it. Look for the video.

      Thank you! Really great question! Are you on it too? I have had issues with it negatively impacting my sleep at times, but just briefly when I raise the dose. And, then I'm usually fine the next day or day after. If it continually messes up my sleep, then I return to the prior dose amount. When I take it, I have to go to sleep within 30 minutes after taking it, or else it will kind of give me energy and keep me up. Weirdly, though it can disturb my sleep when raising the dose, overall it seems to help me to sleep so much better.

      @@FknFrenchT0ast Thanks for asking about this. That's awesome you're in the medical field and so interested! With the LDN, some people start out on doses that are too high for them - even 1.5mg can be high. I had to start super super low, to avoid many sleep disturbances. My very first time taking it though - I woke up from my deep sleep and sat up in bed with the most intense energy surge ever. It was something I had never experienced before in my life and never had it again. When I raise the dose, I will often have memorable dreams, though they aren't scary luckily. I have been staying on a lower amount of 1 to 1.5mg for a while now so I haven't had any disturbances in ages. I probably will when I raise the dose again though. :)

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I have Hashimoto's, among other autoimmune issues, and I started LDN about a year ago. I've noticed that my GI tract is way more resilient, and I may have more motivation and energy, but I've also experienced getting sick more, struggling with chronic infections after getting sick, and heavy periods all of a sudden when I never had that issue before. Do you have any experience with this or knowledge about it? My doctor isn't knowledgeable about LDN, and he was suggesting that maybe I should stop taking it; however, I don't want to stop if it's working, and these symptoms are just a part of the process as my body heals.

      Thank you! I need to do some updated videos. I've been off of it for a while now and just got a new RX and will start fresh again soon. I am SO EXCITED.
      I'm sorry you're dealing with Hashimotos and other autoimmune problems. It's such a pain. People don't understand.
      That's great to hear about your GI tract being more resilient. I could use that as well. I know it is often used for GI related issues. The other issue you mentioned - heavy periods - that is unusual. Whatever you do, I would not listen to that doc and stop the meds. I'm sure you aren't. You just reminded me of when I first started on LDN many years ago - and I think it's possible that as your immune system strengthens, dormant viruses can kind of resurface. I just remember having a cold sore pop up right when I started taking LDN and that was so weird at the time. I don't remember getting very sick though, but it's just hard to remember. I do know it took me some time to really improve many aspects of my health. Prior to that, I too was getting sick all the time.
      Just so you know, if you need a good doc to help you with your LDN experience and other issues, I do know of one and he is absolutely the best. He first prescribed me LDN and he is in southern Wisconsin. He takes patients by phone call if you don't live nearby. Just throwing that out there. If you want his info, you can email me and I can share it.
      I also used to have hormone-related problems - breast pain and cysts/lumps - but esp the breast pain and severe periods (not related to LDN). The breast pain went away when I stopped consuming soy. I think diet is most important and the first thing to look into. Then, after that, NAC is a really helpful supplement when you're sick and I think Turmeric is a great addition for that too.
      Some people also get chronic infections if they were put on antibiotics too much. It can really mess everything up. Regarding your period - if you could get hormone testing done, that might be helpful. Doctors don't often do that though, unfortunately. :( Years ago I ended up paying out of pocket for a full panel of hormone tests called Dutch Complete.
      You could also order blood tests through Ulta Labs here: www.ultalabtests.com/testing/categories/womens-health/women which are cheaper (plus they accept coupons & usually have them for 20% off). I've used this site before. You just order whatever tests you want, pay and then go to a lab location (you must check for a lab location prior to ordering to be sure you have one nearby). It's SO much cheaper than other sites I've used in the past. And, it's sort of a last resort if the doctor won't help you.

    hm... LDN, idk what to say about that, i am reluctant to anything that messes with my brain chemicals. btw, when i wake up, i am dizzy and have an over all ill sensation. not always, but sometimes. anyhow, my diet needs organizing indeed. but all that aside, my sweets intake on a normal day is : morning some brioche, later some wafers, then later another wafer or something, then cake in the evening. then late evening wafers or brioche, or chocolate.
    what actually happens, is that the industry pumps up too much sugar in our sweets. this is what it gets us ill. but if you are careful about the sweets you have, you will get only a manageable and sometimes even necessary dose of sugar. i often find that a slice of cake from a responsible cake maker(or preferable made by yourself) is way more satisfying and satiable than a cake made for the masses bought in regular places. also i noticed that quality cake does not make me feel "heavy" after i have a big slice.
    aaaand now i want brioche. but i just had 2 glasses of wine so i won't.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Kathleen. How much LDN are you taking? And, so sorry you are still having high antibodies. For me personally, I get high antibodies from gluten & at times it's happened from an illness (flu virus). Some people say they are also impacted by dairy, but I think gluten is the big one. My doctor advised me to take Selenium everyday to try to get the antibodies down too & many people have had success with that. For me, I try to take it here and there (I often forget) and then I also definitely take it daily if my thyroid is out of whack. My labs normalized after I was on LDN for a month or so (when taking natural dessicated thyroid, not the standard thyroid med). My doctor would probably tell me to raise my LDN if possible and he would probably tell me to really check what I'm eating to be sure things are not cross contaminated with gluten. I just recently posted a new video on LDN and share info for a doc who does telehealth consults too. If your doctor can't figure it out, you may want to check out this other one. OH I almost completely forgot - what thyroid medicine are you taking? For me personally when I was on the standard thyroid meds (I can't think of the name - the one regular doctors always prescribe) I still had high antibodies & they worsened. I only got better when I went on natural dessicated thyroid. I really hope things improve for you.

I don’t know if you use muscle testing or are aware of it but that’s how my Doctor has figured out what my body can take and it’s help me out dramatically. I use some dairy like grass fed Kerrygold butter and ghee but maybe that has to change too :( I also have a little coffee with organic cream... also probably not good and this is hardest for me. @@kathleenmcculley6177 Hi Kathleen. That is so interesting about the muscle testing. What exactly is that? I haven't heard of it but I am interested. :) I like buying Kerrygold butter too for my son. So, it's taken a while for me to find good dairy alternatives, but I really like the one I use now. I am really sensitive to gums (xantham, carageenan, etc.) and those are in a lot of the nut milks at stores, so I can only use certain ones. They sell some really great coconut whipped cream topping. :) Some people may not like my other dairy alternatives as it may sound weird. When I was growing up I was taught that fat was bad for you and low fat was the way to go, etc. and they also taught that lard was not good. But, if I were to bake something gluten free, I would use lard or coconut oil. Lard works really well. For cooking oils I use avocado and olive oil. I haven't tried it, but I know they sell creamer that is coconut and I bet it's really good. I also buy my meat from a local meat processing center/farm and when I make bacon, I save the grease. This may sound weird, but it's so good. I will sometimes make popcorn and use it in place of butter. It's amazing in my opinion. :) Other than that, if baking, coconut milk (the thick stuff in the can) often works well. If you are into baking (I used to be but not so much now), My Paleo Patisserie has some really great recipes. Also, have you ever tried keto bread - by the brand Base Culture? I don't eat it too often but I keep it in my freezer. It doesn't have any weird ingredients and doesn't hurt my stomach (no gluten or dairy) so it's nice to have here and there. I think I may do a whole video on this because there are so many great alternatives for dairy and gluten. :)

    It’s said to start low and increase dose every two weeks until you find the best dose for you. Also, it’s said that it can take at least 1-2 months before noticing any benefits. So if it can take months to notice a benefit, how would you “know” which level of dosing is best?? Eg: it could be that 3.0 mg is my ideal dose, but how would I know that and not increase to 4.5? Does my question make sense??

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Před rokem +1

      Hi Cindy and I am so sorry for the late reply. Some people notice benefits much sooner than 1-2 months (some people notice right away, others it may take longer). Usually you will gauge how you feel, when figuring out the best dose. And, there is a fine line between taking too much and getting the amount just right. So if you go over the amount and you are taking too much, it can mess with your sleep. So you take a step down and take a bit less, and then see how you feel. If you're feeling more energy and less pain, etc. - that could be the right dose at that time. It is really hard to figure out but as you are taking it, I think you'll get a better feel for it. :)

    Did you say your doc made you promise not to eat gluten if you were to start LDN? If so, do you happen to know WHY you were told that? I took my first dose of LDN (1mg) and it triggered a rough bout of insomnia that's lasted four days. Insomnia is my chief complaint w/Haschi's and I'm digging for the root cause of the insomnia. One theory is it is gluten/casein related. Gluten and casein don't cause gut issues for me, but my theory is that they may cause inflammation and/or an immune system response that triggers CNS sensitization. After this insomnia cycle passes, I'll retry LDN w/morning dosing.

    • @TFunksterorama

      ...and thus the CNS sensitization leads to insomnia for me. Hope that all makes sense. I'm a bit sleep deprived!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Před rokem +2

      I hope your sleep is better by now. If you can stick it out with the LDN at night, it might be worth it. I would just super lower the dose as much as possible. Then you can ease your way into it. I was so sensitive to the most miniscule amount of it when I first started taking it. I took less than .25 the first time and woke up with an insane surge of energy at 3AM. Not sure if I fell back asleep or not, but not likely. I then took it easy and slowly worked my way up over time. If I experienced insomnia, I'd back down onto a lower dose. It gave me a lot more energy overall. It takes some time to tweak the dose. But, whenever I took it during the day, I didn't notice any benefits. Gluten is very inflammatory and it seems to be a big problem for people with Hashimotos. I too don't have celiac or any stomach problems from gluten - I end up getting thyroid problems from it though. I couldn't get better until I got rid of the gluten (and dairy for me but I became highly lactose intolerant). I understand what you mean about the inflammation from gluten. For sure. I hope you end up having great results from the LDN. Sorry you have the insomnia issues (even before taking LDN). For me, I take Glycine before bed and that helps. But, I also noticed if I eat carbs before bed, I end up with insomnia or I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep. Hopefully you can figure out your issue soon!

    The LDN part of this video is good. A lot of the diet information is a little suspect when taken in broad strokes, so please take that part with a grain of salt. Our dietary needs are pretty individualized, especially those with chronic illness. Carbohydrates are fuel. If you're able to get your gut inflammation under control, avoiding gluten, sugar, and carbohydrates isn't necessary as a broad strokes recommendation.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks. I totally agree with you that our dietary needs are individual and everyone is different. Personally, I think it's a great thing if you're metabolically flexible and don't need carbs for fuel. Ketones are fuel also.
      Here's a very recent research paper, a systematic review and meta analysis of 44 randomized control trials, showing that a Keto Diet lowers markers of inflammation: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38219223/.
      The combined or pooled findings of these studies indicated that following a ketogenic diet had a statistically significant effect on lowering levels of two inflammation markers-TNF-α and IL-6-compared to control groups.
      Elevated TNF is associated with various inflammatory conditions, autoimmune diseases and some infections. IL-6 is elevated in response to inflammation and injuries. It's also a test that can be used to monitor health in those with autoimmune issues.
      *Subgroup Analysis:*
      The researchers performed a subgroup analysis, which involves looking at specific subsets of the data. In this case, they focused on trials where the ketogenic diet was followed for 8 weeks or less and on individuals aged 50 years or younger.
      The results showed that in these specific subgroups, the reduction in TNF-α levels was significantly higher compared to other groups.
      Additionally, they observed that individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2 experienced a greater decrease in IL-6 levels after following the ketogenic diet compared to those with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or lower.

      @@LifeDIY That's cool and good for keto followers, but the meta-analysis as far as I can tell doesn't account for lifestyle, muscle mass, visceral fat, or other factors that would also lead to the same result. Diets generally work well because they keep our calorie inputs lower or equal to our calorie outputs. Often times they also reduce our intake of heavily processed, calorically-dense-nutritionally-light foods. Your diet should match your lifestyle, so we shouldn't be quick to extol the virtues of a diet as the main driver of these things.
      The Mediterranean diet is another example of this where it's actually high carb, high fat, but low in processed foods. Very similar marker reductions as listed in this meta analysis. It's why I mentioned being careful about where we assign the value. I'm glad keto works for you. For some, especially chronically ill people, keto can absolutely demolish them. I know because I was one of those unlucky people.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Před 7 měsíci

      It sounds like anxiety. I think I used to worry so much too. Sometimes supplements can help a bit with this, but I also find that diet has a massively huge impact on worrying/anxiety and sometimes OCD symptoms. You may not realize the things you're eating are causing it. Some people have benefits from taking NAC. I have found that a supplement called Mood Support has really helped with anxiety issues in the past. But, more than anything, the diet is key (for me that is very low carb) and fried garbage food like chips cause me anxiety. Regarding LDN, when I initially started taking it many years ago I felt quite a difference in my mood and well-being - so if it has that impact, it may help a bit with the worrying.

    If you can't get your doctor to prescribe LDN, they may be willing to write a script for Contrive instead & if insurance covers it, that would lower the cost to $15 a month. It's 8mg of naltrexone + 80mg of bupropion, which is also highly anti-inflammatory. You MUST break them in half as it is slow release and LDN must be quick release, however that then puts it at the ideal dose of 4mg.

    Thanks for your video on LDN and Hashimoto's I too have been taking LDN for this disorder - but for now just over 10.5 years. Although Hashimoto's is primarily a female affliction -- it does affect males too. And for sure I was suffering horribly from this disorder before discovering LDN in early 2012.
    I was helped so much by LDN for my Hashimoto's disorder, I gradually became a Patient Advocate for LDN too. But the past several years I have not been as active in promoting LDN use. Just got frustrated. Ran into so many brick walls. Mostly I became frustrated with uneducated, closed-minded Big Pharma doctors who just refuse to prescribe it, and don't even seem to care about learning about LDN therapy for Autoimmune diseases and Cancers.
    Most of what I have learned about LDN is from information absorbed from watching the great CZcams videos on LDN Therapy provided from interviews conducted with LDN Therapy founder Dr. Bernand Bihari. Everything I know about LDN Therapy comes from/through him. Dr. Bihari was such a brilliant doctor and I recommend anyone considering LDN Therapy to absolutely watch his CZcams videos for great background knowledge about LDN.
    Back in 2015, I was so impressed with my results on LDN Therapy I put out my own CZcams advocacy video on LDN. As I recall, I then had a number of aging friends and relatives who were getting sick from Cancer. And most of those were not doing that great on the traditional Chemo/Radiation prescribed therapies. So I put out my own Advocacy video for LDN therapy. It's kind of old now, but I still get quite a few views and it does have very useful LDN information and also some very helpful links in the Comments section.
    Again thanks so much for your video on LDN and Hashimoto's I can relate very well as LDN has likewise saved me from a most certain Health disaster had I not discovered LDN therapy from my own research back in late 2011 and early 2012.
