Haven't seen anyone have so much fun doing a guitar review, save for those two Brits at Andertons.
Boris Chang i agree hahaha
I just discovered that this guitar exists and looked it up to see if I wanted to prioritize it in my guitar wish list. Thanks to this review, I think that this not only gets on that list, but it goes on as my next guitar buy. Thanks for a great review!
Great Review and Demo. You covered all the questions that I would ask and gave great examples.I Am buying one next month for myself, been an acoustic 12 string player for 30 years and at one time owned a Rickenbacker 12, I miss that electric 12 string feel and sound. Thank you again.
I wish all guitar reviews were this educational and entertaining! Thanks!
+Zaphodz Thank you.
This is the BEST dog-gone review ever! ❤
I've been watching and researching, and you Sir, answered everything I wanted to know.
Thank you! Big hugs! ❤😊
Thank you...That was a long time ago: I'm glad it is still relevant and appreciated. I just purchased a Gretsch Rally II 6 string guitar that is amazing (when properly set up) that you may want to check out if you're looking for a guitar of that variety.
Nice review and nice playing! Love the Hard Day's Night opening chord!
One of the best things I've heard in any guitar review was that first bit playing the riff from Pretty Woman on each pickup. That really gave a good comparison of all three pickup settings.
Great review, and really enjoyed your playing. Thank you!
Love this guitar. Found an identical one on Craigslist a few years ago after watching this review. I shot down to Baltimore to snatch it up for $550. The guy didn't like the way it played. I could see why. After a neck adjustment and tweaking the bridge, it plays like a dream. Tweaking the pickup adjustments really sweetened the sound. Thanks for showing what the guitar is capable of.
Thankyou for this! I need one of these for sure now.
Nice demo! Sweet sounding guitar!
I wish it had twelve saddles on the bridge. Awesome review!
its a really good way to start the video a hards day night main chord!!
I really enjoy all your videos..
+David Adkins Thanks, David.
thank so you much for playing actual music/songs and not just horrible blues licks for 20 minutes like most play videos.
Thanks for a very good review of an uncommon guitar!!!
Which type of plectrum are you using in this video?
Thanks for your reaction. I like the looks of the new Gretsches a lot. Sounds seem to be a little warmer. than the Dano. Strumming sounds of the gretsch are awesome in this video.
The one thing that worries me about the Gretsches 12 strings is that they only have 6 saddles. Some say this may give intonation problems. Did you experience intonation problems ? Or is this maybe just part of the sound ? (eg often the top 2 strings are tuned deliberatly a little bit off just to give a chorus sound so I've heard.)
Yes, there is an intonation thing with only six saddles, and it does bother mer, so I guess you would call it an issue. I live with it by chalking it up to being part of the vintage sound. I have not researched replacement bridges with 12 saddles, but I'm fairly sure one is out there.
I had one of these Jake, and I also had intonating problems, I took it to 5th Avenue Fret shop in columbus who one of the best around, right away they told me the bridge is out of position and no matter what they did it would never be properly in tune
I didnt want the expense of moving the bridge, so they reversed the saddles to get more adjustment, It was better but man trying to keep a balance to D and E and A chords was a headache so I got rid of it
Yep. It does have intonation issues.
Have you ever tried it on the Jangle Box?
ive just bought one its on its way, can you tell me a good amp for my bedroom, and what pedal was you using, i wish i could play like you those 60s sounds were amazing thanks Jake
+anthony wisnicki Hey Anthony, Congratulations on your new guitar. If you want to play those 60's sounds getting that Gretsch 12-string is a great place to start. I did the review running through a Zoom g2.1u multi effects pedal into an original Fender Twin Reverb made in 1965. That amp is way too much for a bedroom. I suggest the ZT Amps Lunchbox. It is a small amp that has a lot of power so you can keep clean settings even loud enough to play with a drummer. Have fun! Jake
+jake kelly thanks a lot Jake for your help
And a compressor really helps to bring out the jangle of a 12 string. Even though it's a more 'budget' model, I like the Mooer Yellow Comp.
cheers
UPDATE - got the Gretsch 12 last week. Build quality is very good, sounds great, the sunburst version looks nice.. Will have to practice a lot to adjust my fingering to 12-strings. It's very playable, tho. I'm using just the bridge pickup, bass down, treble turned up to "11" to get it closer to that "Ric" sound. Will have to buy a Janglebox .
A Janglebox is on the wish. list, but not very high on the list
The Great thing about a 12 String Electric is that it's easy to play due to the lower action & lighter gauge strings.
i think there is one. let me see if i can find out where it is.
Whats the last song?
Ha!!! These boots are made for walkin'. I'm not embarrassed to admit I love that song and still harbor a crush for Nancy. How does Blind Willie McTell stuff sound on this guitar?
Hello,
How does this guitar sound unplugged?
Hello Peter. Well, even though this guitar is hollow, it is not very loud and it cannot compete with a conventional flat top acoustic guitar. This is due to some of the aspects of the primary design. First, the guitar's top is made of laminate (the musical term for plywood) as oppose to solid wood. It is also thicker than a conventional guitar top and there's a sound post inside the guitar all of which inhibit vibration, which makes it quieter acoustically, but able to be turned up more plugged in. That being said, it sounds bright with jangle, but not overtly loud.
jake kelly Thanks!
It's actually about as loud as an acoustic. I was pleasantly surprised!
To Tim James: Actually Kevin Costner DOES play guitar and has his own band! Kevin Costner & Modern West - The Angels came down
What song are you playing starting around 7:50?
+Psychedelic Bass Player These Boots Are Made for Walkin'?
+Psychedelic Bass Player Yeah, These Boots Are Mad For Walking!
+jake kelly Absolutely!
thanks :)
greeting from germany.
This or a danelectro 12 string ?
Maybe some other would like to post on this. I have not played a Dano 12-string, so I'm not qualified to say.
i didn't know kevin costner played guitar!!!
I didn`t know Kevin Costner was a musician also.
I play Epiphones because I cannot afford Gibsons. I would buy a Chinese licensed Rickenbacker tomorrow if it was available. But it isn't. And it won't be. Ric won't do that, because they don't want to dilute their brand. Believe it or not, part of me agrees with them. A Ric 360/12 is a special instrument, and should remain so. Which brings us to Mr. Gretsch. I'm going to pull the trigger on one of these, because at less than half the cost of the Ric, it's a well-made, good sounding, good looking guitar. And I'm going to enjoy playing it.
Michael Powell I'm also looking for a 12 string "on a budget". I'm also considering a danelectro 12 string (dc 59) but the gretsch seems to have a warmer tone.
You got at least one string that sounds terrible. Have you tried this guitar on the Jangle Box?
Ha! Indeed!! I guess I hadn't thought about it because to me an Electric 12 string is a different animal than an Acoustic 12-string. However, this does have some qualities to it that are reminiscent of cheaper acoustic 12 strings that a delta blues player might have used. I haven't tried it in the manner, however.
The bridge position sounds best....more like a Ric, which it definitely is not. Try this baby with a Jangle Box to get that jingle jangle sound.
you sound like old gil from the simpsons hehe, but nice review i want to play it
and it was those white boots. that was a thing.
yeah, maybe not my best. i'll try harder.
yeah, sorry about that.
nope. it was a solidbody 12 with a tremolo: the eastwood sidejack 12 dlx.
sorry.
Really? I was thinking more of Kevin Costner in JFK.
As first glance he looks a lot like Eric Clapton.....
Really? And tell us about 2nd glance...
not quite in tune.
Looks good, sounds good but it ain't a RIC and its out of tune.
hey kevin costner's cousin! shut up and play!
out of tune
