The atmosphere in this game is immaculate. The feel you get when walking around with the music, especially walking by lightfoot village. The day and night cycle, and just how connected the world is, it makes it all feel like a real place. I loved this game so much.

This has always been my favorite Star Fox game. I love the atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, and yes, I like the foxy blue vixen. I just wish they did more with her; I don't mind her being a damsel-in-distress to rescue, but I'd rather rescue her earlier in the game so she and Fox can work together to save Dinosaur Planet. Give them more time to interact and bond with each other.
I hope Star Fox Adventures comes back on Switch, and I'd love to see a proper sequel to it, perhaps one that takes the Star Fox team to different planets, lets you explore them on foot, and lets you interact with the inhabitants of that planet. I believe that is the future of the Star Fox series.

The Nintendo 64 version funny enough Krystal had her own entire adventure you could play from start to finish, just for whatever reason Miyamoto and his crew rather did the opposite and i had no idea why, maybe it could've been time constraint issues to port over everything and have the story connect with starfox during her journey cuz outside of tricky there was another AI partner you could've had that tags along with krystal so yeah... a TON of the game and more areas to explore was completely stripped out.

My only complaints is that I was quite disappointed that I couldn’t fight Gen Scales and once again to defeat Andross. The final fight was a little lackluster but a small nitpick against a game I loved. I also remember being amazed by the way of how they captured fur for the GC. The music was incredible. Each track reflected the environment perfectly. Thorntail Hollow day/night, cape claw, ocean force point temple, ancient well are among my favorites

The design of the Arwing and Great Fox in this game was always my favorite by far. They look straight out of Star Wars, gritty and used. Andross' design also legitimately made my heart drop as a kid. Those eyes were terrifying.

This was still during the time where you would rent games and where you would play single players experiences side by side with friends. I like it okay. I’m in the camp who wished it was Dinosaur Planet as its own IP. Helps that the prototype looks like it gets to the action faster. The opening of Starfox Adventures feels slow, mainly due to “Do you know how to pick up and throw things? Yes? Well here’s a whole series of mind numbingly basic puzzles around it. With no staff or ground enemies yet to fight with.”

For someone like myself who grew up on Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the N64.
Especially after coming off from the high difficulty spike that was Majora's Water Dungeon, the easy nature of StarFox Adventures is perhaps what I could call a Beginner's Zelda.
However that button mashing minigame against the Strong Lightfoot tribe member is hell and can ruin your GameCube controller if you are playing with a 3rd Party controller.

I feel that the quality visuals and soundtrack helped to make it quite immersive and I actually find it to be more enjoyable than some Zelda games.
The test of strength mini game was a big problem for me as I have never been great with tapping A fast enough to win. I had to get a family member who was amazing at the Mario Party mini games where you tap A to beat that part for me. Someone actually did a good video going into better details about Starfox Adventures issues, especially with how General Scales is built up as a very imposing antagonist and then not using him, the combat system not allowing you to switch enemy targets, acting as a gimped version of Z-targeting and every combo dealing the same amount of damage, the attack animation flourish is just for show but slows the gameplay down too much. You’re better off not engaging with most fights in the game if they aren’t mandatory and that’s mainly the fights in the overworld.
The abilities of the Staff are implemented and streamlined, but at most, their uses in and out of combat are at best, negligible, very clunky, and don’t change combat much. The fact there’s no fast travel in a game that forces you backtrack through an overworld that is mostly linear can become tedious and it doesn’t help that the Warp Stone, which is in it’s name, doesn’t warp you to where you’ll need to go. Enemies also aren’t a threat and never keep up with you, the T-Rexes do the same amount of damage that the first enemies you fight in your first combat scenario and that’s practically every enemy in the game.
If those issues were addressed, then it’d help, but it’s not helping the game when General Scales is done the most disservice overall in the game while Krystal is also put into the DiD role, cause Andross’ appearance at the end isn’t a very well done twist, it’s very jarring.
Here’s the video if anyone is curious: czcams.com/video/Q79l5MDYBPA/video.htmlsi=n-Avlmx37ueCzHg2

Test of Fear Kazoa Test, I see this as an early teaching of how NOT to be distracted in order to win.
If you are distracted by what is going on screen, you fail.
Perhaps a Minigame in Thorntail Hollow could have been used to prepare gamers for that Kazoa test.
In fact, Thorntail Hollow could have used a few minigame shops to give gamers a practice for what they might need later on when they go for the Kazoa tests, that could have given gamers time to get used to the mini game mechanics before really pushing them in the story segments.

Tapping with your index finger can also work. Over the years, I've discovered the index can tap a lot faster than the thumb can. The trick lies in moving your wrist more than your finger; you want to create this sort of vibration where your finger presses and depresses the button in rapid fashion.

The Dinosaur Planet beta dumped a year ago feels like yesterday and still fresh and jaw dropping as Starfox Adventures. Its worth a dive now especially with the restoration team patching and making more stable from crashing if anyones first playthrough got too clunky. Theres artifacts including walled City shadowhunters that we see only in Adventures Test of Fear
Rare nailed the atmosphere and mystery even as Starfox Adventures. That kind of exploration across lands is still Starfox-like in its theme kf travel so its warmed up on me more the last few months. Minus stuck mashing A at Lightfoot, i vividly recall grinding fuel cells told i need them, but didnt need them choosing next area anyway.

The atmosphere and the environments are so good that even in the previous unreleased N64 version, they still looked amazing. I think the hate for it really only started to appear when StarFox Command came out and people blamed Adventures for basically starting "canon StarFox fan fiction." Like Jet Force Gemini, I think it has sort of a Saturday Morning Cartoon-esque vibe and approach to it which make some people hard to say they enjoy it as adults, people are just overly critical and negative of anything that seems remotely childish or light.

I think in was like 13 when i played SFA on the GC. I was a big StarFox Fan (i still am, look at my profilpic xD) my friends and i always roleplayed to be StarFox Characters, going on missions etc.
I loved SFA so much. Didnt mind it was a diffrent setting. I played SF64 and StarFox on the SNES. But seeing my favourite Characters on a real Adventure was huge for me. I had no struggles with those MiniGames at all. I mean i was already almost a teenager but i think if i was younger it wouldnt be that bad. I beat StarFox SNES with 6 so.. yeah..
I agree with the issues you mentioned. As an adult, it sticks out even more. But the biggest issues i had as a teenager was that the other teammates haden't to do much. I only know the game from its cover. And for me it suggested that the other Characters had their own gameplay mechanics etc. And i was really upset thet Falco was nowhere to be seen untill the very End. And speaking of the End. I didnt like it that there was no Endgame at all. I mean you could only replay the last boss and thats it.
But yes. Today, i still think that StarFox Adventures was and is a great game. It had his issues but still was a great Adventure game.
I just hope we see StarFox return someday. To bad what happend to it after that mature Zero failure. StarLink showed in which direction a StarFox game could go today and that Fans still want it to return.

  • @GacLosen6556
    @GacLosen6556 Před měsícem +1

Star Fox Adventures is a good game on an objective level. When I still had access to this game, I played it quite a lot and enjoyed it. It's basically a Zelda game with Star Fox characters, and while that sounds weird, the game works well with what it set out to do. I love the dinosaur interactions, I love the world, the music, and the graphics, and I really do love a lot of the setpieces in this game barring the entire lightfoot/test of fear BS which is more annoying than it is anything else.
But that's exactly the issue, as well, Like I said, I don't hate this game, but when I wanted to play a brand new Star Fox game, I was not expecting that A: I would be basically playing a Zelda clone, B: The game wouldn't allow me to use Fox's Blaster, which is his trademark weapon on the ground, and C: That the final boss, despite it being a great callback to 64, came entirely out of left field.
The reason why people remember Star Fox 64 as the best game in the series is because the game had a lot of white knuckle moments where you had to make split second decisions if you wanted to win or get the higher score. Blasting through Area 6 is still one of the most fond memories Star Fox fans (such as myself) have, alongside the quotable and meme-worthy dialogue that just isn't present in Adventures. While Adventures is a good Zelda clone, the problem is that it is a good Zelda clone with the Star Fox name on it. It's like if you were to make a COD-style shooter with Mario characters. Even if it plays well and is fun, it would feel completely mismatched with the rest of the content. I even remember that the reverse sort of happened with Link's Crossbow training, which was a third person sometimes on-rails shooter, and while it was fun, the game was treated as a Spin-off, and was meant to be seen as such. Adventures was meant to be the sequel to 64, yet it felt more like a spin-off in terms of tone and feel.
Fox not having his blaster would be rectified in the following Star Fox game on the Gamecube, which did take a lot of notes from 64, Assault, but seeing how his blaster worked in Assault kind of made me glad that Fox didn't have it in Adventures on a gameplay level. For all the good Assault tried to do to rectify Star Fox, all it basically did was say "Yeah, this is it. It would have sucked in Adventures." The reason why I'm mentioning Assault here is because Adventures marked the downward trend in Star Fox games we are still seeing to this day. Even Zero, wich was the closest game in tone and feel to 64 was bogged down by an unintuitive control scheme, and even introduced a new vehicle which no one wanted to play as. Is it fair to blame Adventures for what happened to Star Fox as a series? No. But is is the start of the trend? Absolutely.
Finally, Andross. I understand full well that Andross is the main and most iconic villain of the series, but this was General Scales' show from the beginning. Andross had zero build up and was shoehorned in for no reason whatsoever. Even in 64, they explain before you reach the start screen, or even before you do the first level of Corneria that Andross is the big bad. He's never seen during gameplay until the player reaches Area 6 or Venom 1, but his presence is everywhere. He has bases, labs, secret weapons, and generals throughout the Lylat system, and his forces are out to kill you, making it 100% clear that he is the big bad. It makes meeting him at Venom feel all the more real, because you literally were fighting a war against this guy across multiple planets. In Adventures? Right when you're supposed to finally take down Scales (and it was supposed to happen with the unused rendition of Area 6 from 64 playing as the boss theme), you can get one hit on the guy before Andross tells him to screw off. If Andross was going to come back, it should have happened in Assault with the Aparoids, and hell, Assault's first boss is a robotic Andross clone, so it would have served as a great tutorial or foreshadowing for the final boss. Again, the downward trend is showing here.
Like I said, Adventures is a fine game on its own. It's well designed, and paced, has great graphics and music, and is still a great game to sit down and play despite its quirks and minor hiccups. But just because Adventures is a good game, that doesn't mean it's a good Star Fox game. It truly saddens me that we haven't seen a good Star Fox game since 64, and honestly? Nintendo would do better to remake Star Fox 2, because when I played that years after playing Adventures, Assault, and Zero (I never played Command, so I can't comment on it), I felt more like I did when I was playing 64 than any other game in the series. Liking Adventures isn't an issue. I like it. But I also know that this game isn't a Star Fox game, and it's truly saddening to see Star Fox as a series in this state.

One thing that's always perplexed me is the muted consensus around this game when taken in comparison to Beyond Good & Evil, which is remembered much more fondly despite having MANY similarities to SFA. Near identical mechanics, gameplay, & "dungeon" design; staff-based combat with a long-range projectile move used primarily for puzzle solving instead of combat; partner system; vehicle segments; somewhat short and fairly linear…
My only complaint about SFA is one that has to do with the Star Fox license being shoehorned on, but it's not the licence itself. It's apparent now that we have prototypes from various stages of development that the integrating of Star Fox characters happened much earlier than we used to think, and coincided with content & feature lock-it seems like as soon as they started working on turning Dinosaur Planet into a Star Fox game, all serious work on features and content froze and the game was especially treated as content-complete where it was, to get it out the door. Without the Star Fox move I wonder what additional stages, environments, and mechanics we could've gotten.

    • @tonyhell
      @tonyhell Před 20 dny

I actually prefer SFA to BG&E due mainly to the absence of those excruciating stealth sections that found themselves shoehorned into BG&E and Zelda: Wind Waker in the wake of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell's success.

Personally, I'd bring them all together, including Fox and Saber. Being that Saber is a wolf, it'd be interesting if he developed a rivalry with Fox, echoing Fox's rivalry with a certain other Wolf.
I even thought of an AU origin story that would have Star Fox meeting Krystal, Saber, and Randorn on a planet that serves as a hub of criminal activity, and agreeing to ferry them away from said planet. During the voyage, Fox and Krystal grow close to each other, which makes Saber envious. General Scales would appear as well, pursuing the Cerinians with his crew of SharpClaw and another Cerinian female named Kursed (yes, I would turn Kursed into a separate character from Krystal, though serving as her dark counterpart much as Wolf does for Fox).

The Star Fox IP could have added so much more; the original IP (and elements such as the original villain) could have been better fleshed out. Combat could have been so much better, and cutscene/collection animation skipping could have significantly eased the general ergonomics of gameplay. It's like looking at a recipe for an incredible dish, handing it to the chef, and when he comes back with the completed dish, it's just... not quite right. All the ingredients are there, but the spice, the spirit of the recipe, is lacking somehow.
I heard someone say once, "nobody really wants to make a bad game." Of course the team behind this one had big plans before the Star Fox dimension landed on their plate, and even so, they tried to make an experience intended to be unique, fun, and tap into nostalgia for fans of a pretty big franchise at the time. I admit that sometimes I give a little too much benefit of the doubt to folks who probably don't really deserve it, but this is one of those times where I feel pretty confident saying, they probably would have done better (gameplay, writing, etc.) if they could, but there's a fair chance time was of the essence.
It takes time to retool a creative project into something different, especially something as fundamental as changing your protagonist(s) and adding a twist villain to show up the one you originally planned because they're simply a bigger figure in the gaming world.

Agreed. The big changes I would have made are:
      1. Fox rescues Krystal a lot earlier in the game, and she joins up with him and Tricky in saving Dinosaur Planet. Fox and Krystal's dynamic is a bit bumpy early on, but the attraction is present and mutual, and by the end of the story, they've smoothed things out considerably.
      2. Drakor would be the main villain as intended, with General Scales as his right-hand man.
      3. We would have gotten proper matches with Scales and Drakor both.
      4. Andross could show up as a secret true final boss, having perhaps been the one who modified Drakor, but he wouldn't steal Scales or Drakor's thunder outright.
      5. I would probably try to work Saber and Randorn into the story as well, as fellow Cerinians alongside Krystal who are seeking a new home after the destruction of their home planet.

Sadly, I never got this game when I was younger. I’ll definitely have to pick up a copy at some point or maybe Nintendo could just bring it to the switch at some point.
I think the fact that Rare used LoZ as inspiration while making this game is cool in itself.
Even though dinosaur planet would’ve been a cooler game as it would’ve been an original IP. This game isn’t bad just because of that reason alone.
The music, world design, voice acting, etc is all really good. (Typical Rare stuff by this point.) not much else I can say as I’ve never play the game itself. Although I look forward to playing it someday. Great video as always man, keep it up!

I followed the progress of StarFox Adventures from when it was first unveiled as Dinosaur Planet at E3 in 2000 until it's eventually release in September 2002.

    Good:
    Environments look fantastic.
    Krystal looks Fanfucintastic.
(Love the sensual Jungle FoxGirl vibe)
    Superb atmospheric music.
(Dark Ice Mines depths music is my fav, that booming start followed by a calming relaxed crescendo with moments of tense unease followed by determination to save everyone trapped inside the Dark Ice mines)
Funny moments gave me a chuckle during my teenage years.
(Fox's reaction to seeing Krystal was my fav, for obvious reasons)
3 of the 4 Dungeon/Planet Pieces Boss Fights were great.
Memorable ending with Krystal joining the Star Fox team.
Bad: (still defending the game but not blind to what RARE was going through that caused these issues)
Didn't get enough development time to include Krystal's part of the story so they had to rush through to make the story focus on Fox after Krystal's brief tutorial arc.
Dinosaur Language felt like it was a last minute idea that was dropped entirely during the 2nd quarter of the story.
So many parts of original Dinosaur Planet lore was sacrificed just to include Star Fox lore.
Microsoft buying RARE during early months of 2002 caused the crunch time and so many parts of the game left to be included were either rushed or dropped out from the game.
(Watch E3 2002 video to see that StarFox Adventures was the ONLY game RARE was talking about, they knew it back then that RARE was being sold to Microsoft but had to keep a straight face to not cause too many rumors)
    General Scales Fight.
Racing felt like it needed it's own minigame distraction to give players a chance to perfect for certain story events.

@@jiggylookback Thanks, I kept on thinking of stuff to add on so I kept on editing until I realized you might have already replied.
So my other comments I made as new comments afterwards instead of adding onto the original Good and Bad points.
      Overall 80 to 90 out of 100.
Not perfect due to the situation at RARE we may not have understood about back in the day but since the NDAs have expired we got more information from individuals who were are RARE at the time that shed light into the Nintendo and Microsoft situation at RARE.
So the game itself may have been praised at first, only to get sour in the short term when people were expecting a Star Fox game but didn't know about the original Dinosaur Planet build of the game.
But after all the failures of AAA Gaming in recent years, StarFox Adventures has become better over time in retrospect and a good history lesson in how RARE managed the development of this game despite all the issues in the background that could have made it cancelled.
You could tell that RARE really didn't want to make this another Miremare situation that happened back in their Ultimate years.
Miremare was a ZX Spectrum game for the Sabreman series that was in development but never got finished due to Ultimate being sold to US Gold after RARE was formed so Stamper Bros could work on the NES and expand their newer company outside of the limited scope of UK/Europe.
StarFox Adventures could have easily been cancelled if they missed a vital deadline or were bogged down with scope creep during development that they couldn't afford especially with Nintendo IP being the big issue of why they had to get this one finished before Microsoft announced to the press that they brought RARE the day after this game hit the market.

I'm a big fan of this game. I think its only major flaws are where you can see they ran out of time. Revisiting the dungeons, the lack of a Scales fight, the three on-rails shooter sections in a row near the end, and some general lack of polish here and there. It feels like you finish the first half of the game and then suddenly it's over.
Which makes sense, because the code suggests only about half of the intended content is actually present. For example, the maps database is roughly 50% blank entries. Several levels have events whose names imply they were intended for other, scrapped levels. Lots of scenes have animations defined for Krystal when she's not actually there (it just defaults to Fox instead).
If they'd had more time, they probably could have finished things up properly and addressed most of the glaring issues. Of course, every Rare game had things scrapped for time, so, maybe they wouldn't have actually used that time wisely...
Tricky can be annoying, but people forget that he's basically a dog. Not even a talking dog - you have a translator. He's not supposed to be a genius. (Also, it can happen that he asks WHERE ARE WE GOING? after a long cutscene explaining exactly where you're going, which is just hilarious)

I mean, the series' core gameplay isn't bad, but it's so _limiting._ Most of the sequels that tried to stick close to it, just ended up feeling like rehashes (though most did at least improve the experience in some way), and that's because there's only so much you can do with a jet or a tank compared to a living, breathing, sapient organism. Star Fox Adventures' world is interesting because you get to meet its inhabitants face-to-face and talk to them, and the SharpClaw are easily the most interesting antagonists the series has had for similar reasons. They have a vibe similar to the Kremling Crew, which fits seeing as Rare created both (heck, it'd be awesome if the SharpClaw returned as villains for the DKC series).

I did try to give this game another chance. I was hoping I could overlook the simplicity and linearity of the gameplay, but I found I couldn't overlook the difficulty spikes. From carrying the barrel up the overlong helix in Darkice Mines, to those rail-shooting sections in Dragon Rock with the really jittery aiming, and that abomination The Test of Fear, really left a bad taste in my mouth. The game does have charm, and a nice atmospheric vibe, but I don't think I ever want to play through it again. Because it's a game where you have to commit 15+ hours for a full playthrough, I know I'd only dread having to eventually replay certain sections. Funnily enough, the Test of Strength wasn't one of them (I found that a doddle).

I could only get through the first hour of the game, got stuck (around 12:00 in your video, it looks familiar to me) and then gave up lol. I've always found the character models to look a little off, but that's just me! Also, where's my boi Falco??
I think I need to think of this more of a Zelda game and try again! I trust your judgment, especially if you're defending it!

I first played Adventures in 2017 right after SF Zero, and Adventures was easily the better experience. Adventures also just looks way better than Zero despite being 14 years and 2 entire console generations older which is quite sad on Zero's part. I grew up with SF64 as a hand-me-down, but Assault is really what got me invested in the StarFox IP so maybe that influences how StarFox is for me. Also, Krystal happens to be my favorite character in StarFox, mostly thanks to Assault actually giving her more of a presence, despite those 5 minutes of screentime in Adventures being pretty cool too. I'd say she's like a microcosm of where StarFox shines as well as how it is mishandled by its IP holders.

      @jiggylookback  Před 26 dny

I agree with you. Krystal can be so much more. I don’t remember exactly…but I have Starfox Command and they expand on her and Fox quite a bit.

    • @Z95HeadHunter
      @Z95HeadHunter Před 26 dny

@@jiggylookback I dunno, I felt that in Command, Krystal, and even Fox for that matter were like completely different characters than their earlier appearances. I liked the altruistic heroine, psychic, Jedi'esc last of her kind Krystal in Assault a lot more and I don't think Command made the right call to replace that with the jealous angry Krystal who just wanted to get back at Fox.
For Krystal's character, I think it's best to go back to her backstory about Cerinia in Adventures, and expand on what that means for who Krystal is based on what we've seen of her character in the GC games.

@@jiggylookback that sounds awesome. I think there are tons of ways to do a Krystal game. It could be a proper redux of Dinosaur Planet or a conventional space fairing StarFox game starring her.

Personally, I hate the idea that you have to merge every new concept with an existing IP just to get noticed as a game developer. Not only do you create potential new stories, characters and worlds, you often end up with a game where the existing IP doesn't even belong. And Starfox Adventures is unfortunately one such example. Fox doesn't belong on the ground, where he has to solve puzzles, use magic and explore the world in a prehistoric world with dinosaurs and mammoths.

    • @bcrossfire1219
      @bcrossfire1219 Před měsícem +2

While the setting was unusual and the limitations were arbitrary (No blaster? Seriously?), I think Star Fox absolutely has potential for a game where you spend most of the adventure on foot, interacting with NPCs and firefighting with enemies. Assault gave us a taste of this, though it lacked the adventure component. And honestly, the Krazoa are similar conceptually to beings like the Chozo of Metroid; any "magic" being used could just as easily be advanced technology. You can also compare Star Fox Adventures to something like Star Wars, where sci-fi and fantasy coexist as seen with the Force (huh, and they _are_ called _Force_ Point Temples. Hmm...). And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Dinosaur Planet going to have sci-fi elements anyway? Like the Krazoa, or Drakor being cybernetic? So it's not like Star Fox and Dinosaur Planet were completely incompatible to begin with.
Honestly, I think this insistence that Star Fox must be "only vehicles, ever" is the most damaging thing you can do to the IP. Star Fox Command and Star Fox Zero showed that "vehicles only" doesn't guarantee a good or successful game (I liked Zero better than Command, but ultimately it was just Star Fox 1: Version 3.0), and if vehicles are all you're ever gonna see or interact with, why even have the characters in the first place? They could just as easily be robots built with the abilities to fly and shoot stuff (but that would be boring; the characters are what make the series interesting). It says something that Star Fox Adventures is still better remembered than the painfully linear Star Fox Assault (with the multiplayer being considered its one saving grace) and the painfully drama-laden Star Fox Command, and that's because it actually did something novel for the series, and did a good job of it.
I'll take Star Fox Adventures 2 over Star Fox 1: Version 4.0 any day, thank you very much. Unless they happen to be one in the same (which would be cool; I'd love to fight Venomian forces on foot as well as inside an Arwing).

I enjoyed the game when I was playing every star fox up to that point, wich it was 5 games at the time, no Zero, 64 3D, or official release of the canceled star fox 2 on the SNES. I just think that people that don't like it, they don't like it because it's too different. And some of the weak points of the game would had benefited from a 6 month of extra development time, but we all know by now why it would not be possible.
