Squirt Trimaran - Gets Longer Amas (Process)

  • Found my amas were too short (insufficient buoyancy). Added 24 inches after the 2022 Texas 200. Did a whole lot better in 2023. Winds were 20+ knots several days in a row, gusting to 30. No problems. Glad I made the effort. Much safer.

    Super cool! , if you pushed the amass down would it lift the hull earlier, maybe spread as well to get that center hull lifted and calmed? Who knows! Great build!!!!! More than most of us!!

      @ericdahlkamp6781 I think your design is just very well balanced for the sailing you aiming for specially Texas200. And the build was done and all worked before the race, that's perfect

      In short:
      1. Cut 3/8” ply to ama silhouette shape. Epoxy coat.
      2. Align straight.
      3. Epoxy paste glue 2-pound density closed cell polystyrene foam to ply
      4. Rough cut and shape to suit (tools included, vertical fixed hot wire for initial cut, and freehand hot wire for initial trim, course Jorgensen rasp, hacksaw blade, course large hand file, assortment of sandpaper and files, etc).
      5. Fine sand what appears to be final shape. Epoxy coat. Epoxy paste fill. Fair. Epoxy coat and sand again. Final touch up. Sand final.
      6. Cover with fiberglass glass. I used both both tape and cloth. Especially tape keel and chines (impact areas)
      7. The fairness of your work won't reveal itself really until paint is applied. I used a White oil based Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer as undercoat. sands very well. If find problem, sand through to glass and fill/fair again. Final paint is Rustoleum marine topside. Red is mixed with Rustoleum Kobota Orange 1:1. White is Oyster White.
      Design, fabricate and attach the aka connectors in advance of foam build-out. I bolted and glued mine to the plywood stringer after and this proved to be a challenge. How you do it is entirely up to you.
