  • Actress and producer Brit Marling chats with Gold Derby editor Rob Licuria about 'The OA' secrets: 'There are a lot of theories about the story she is telling.' In “The OA,” Marling plays Prairie Johnson, a blind woman who resurfaces with her sight inexplicably restored after having been missing for seven years. We learn that Prairie was abducted by a scientist experimenting on people who have had near death experiences, which forms the narrative of the story that she tells to a group of four teenage boys and their algebra teacher (Phyllis Smith) over the eight-episode first season.

The OA is one of those moments when you realise something extremely important is happening and you are lucky enough to be a part of the experience. Netflix dropped something with no real understanding of its uniqueness , importance, depth, magic and peculiar magnetic reach. Instead they went down the route of re-runs of Friends.

    • @sdawg4834

They obviously had no clue what they had in front of them with the OA's story and where it could go!! I mean c'mon what kind of other show has really dealt with the transference of the human consciousness and all the possibilities that would come with exploring the topic even further!!

It really kicked in that I was watching a masterpiece when the credits rolled deep in to the first episode... there was something about that moment that locked in the feeling of massive scope... it was a strange and brilliant decision that set the tone for the rest of the series. Leave it to Netflix to buy the streaming rights for every season of FRIENDS for 100 MILLION DOLLARS, but cancels one of the most interesting, emotional, and just plain amazing shows I’ve ever seen in my life because of money.. 😡 At this point I feel like almost everyone on earth has seen every episode of FRIENDS at least once…not to mention it STILL comes on tv every single night. Allowing the show to exist on it's own terms was exactly what was needed for the OA. Season 1 was good enough to a point but went in a weird way that was hard to 100% be on board with for me. Season 2 sealed it as an absolute gem of a show, it actually cleans up season 1 in a really great way for me. I was born dying, bedridden for 6 years facing death in every moment, and entered other ways of dying for close to 73 years (it became an obsession). At 16, after a serious suicide attempt, I began tapping into other dimensions of perception not accessible except by being in a state of death/dying, and stayed dying in many other ways throughout my life (faced with execution at age 20, and dreamed in vivid detail every form of execution). I found a methodology where I could camp out on the exact line of demarcation between death and life, and it always resulted in grand clarity. I eventually became friends with Death & sought his company in exploring other dimensions of perception. I recorded a lot of this in a novel many years ago, 1st in a trilogy. The only film from the past that tapped into this territory was Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs". Amazing series.

Beautiful interview, really insightful and eloquent, from you both... I feel ashamed - I hadn't spotted EITHER the 5 cracks OR understood that was actually Braille! I think I speak for many when I say I was heartbroken when Netflix decided to can the show, after Season 2. I appreciate it was a 'numbers' issue - production cost to audience loyalty ratio, I suppose, put bluntly. But Netflix could/should have better estimated the complexity of the gamble, ahead of outbidding their main competitors for all 5 Seasons. This wasn't new territory for them - they'd just gone through the process with Sense8, their most expensive show to date. Having failed to just shut the show down, Netflix found itself coerced - by the sheer force of the Sense8 fan following - to acquiesce to the final movie-length "winding up" episode, which gave the production team the chance at least to finish the job. That doesn't seem to have ever been on the table with The OA, I've not seen Brit refer to any artistic/creative 'solution' on Netflix's part, which is actually pretty appalling.
Because - it isn't - in reality - just a 'numbers' issue. There is an extremely precious artistic and creative 'exchange,' something intrinsically 'human,' going on between the Creators and the Audience directly - that you isolate and highlight wonderfully in this interview. That unique experience that Creator and Viewer share, at the end of the day is what the Audience is actually after, and which it is Netflix's role to merely 'facilitate.' Perhaps Creators can try to have this added to future contracts - that Netflix is actually prevented from being able to cancel a show without warning, as it did with "The OA." A year on, and I still feel the vacuum - emotionally, artistically, creatively, hell "Humanly" - the shock announcement that Seasons 3 - 5 would not be made, has left.
In my opinion, Netflix needs to recalibrate its 'policy' around defining the conditions under which it feels compelled to cancel a show. They need to factor in the 'damage' cancellation inflicts on their relationship with their audience, who - after all - are ultimately bankrolling everything. And sometimes, some masterpieces - and The OA is undoubtedly a masterpiece - are masterpieces for their quality, not just their 'quantity' in terms of the ratings/viewing figures they generate. It is both absurd and unsustainable in the long term, to decide the fate of especially high-quality projects such as The OA, based solely on the efficiency of their commercial 'turn-around.' If that is the priority criteria, then in my opinion Netflix could get rid of all their surplus to requirements execs, which in turn would halve the cost for the audience, and run the whole show via a couple of bespoke algorithms! The execs are there to ensure mistakes like this are not made, that Netflix does not damage the careers or output of the Creators they choose to acquire, especially not those in Brit Marling's league - so that 1st class talent will still feel able to trust, and want to bring their work to Netflix.
My understanding is that Zal and Brit wrote all 5 Seasons, putting the complete product out to auction, and that Netflix aggressively outbid Amazon, Disney etc, to acquire the title, (correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I heard.) Under those conditions, Netflix should have honoured its' obvious enthusiasm - ideally to the complete project it bid for, or at the very least giving Brit and Zal a chance in a re-written S3, to condense the remainder of the story, and deliver a completed work, not a suddenly decapitated mess mid-way, as has been the case. The Audience are paying for this, they are the client here, to whom Netflix ought to feel beholden. And - traditionally - "Client is King." It is not the Audience's concern whether a show is deemed 'not to be representing its' cost.' Netflix should have onboard sufficiently experienced TV executives, to avoid it ever finding itself in that catastrophic situation, frankly. Had there ever been the slightest doubt within Netflix about the nature of the gamble they were taking with "The OA," that should have immediately curbed the aggressiveness with which they bid to net the title. That didn't happen, and that is something I sincerely hope Netflix are/have reflected long and hard on.
And I repeat, I think there is room here for contractual adjustments, moving forward, that defend Creators - especially those of the quality of Marling and Batlanglij - from 'knee-jerk corporate decision-making" that fails to appreciate how such cancellation decisions inevitably lead to a loss of trust between Netflix and their Audience, their "Client." Which in turn morphs into a loss of loyalty, and ultimately depleted Subscriber numbers, as disappointed and 'deprived' audiences start to abandon the platform.
