If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise is a 2010 documentary film directed by Spike Lee, as a follow-up to his 2006 HBO documentary film, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. The film looks into the proceeding years since Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans and Gulf Coast region, and also focuses on the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and its effect on the men and women who work along the shores of the gulf. Many of the participants in Levees were also featured in this documentary.
It won a Peabody Award in 2010 "for ambitiously chronicling one of the hugest disasters in American history, interrogating the well-known narratives and investigating other stories that could have easily fallen through the cracks."[1]

I was 12 when Katrina hit. I remember being at my grandparents house in the 9th ward a few days before we decided to leave. I remember the pain and worry in my grandmas eyes. My grandpa, uncle and aunt stayed and were rescued from the rooftop. The worry in my mom’s eyes as my dad was a police officer and he stayed never left his post. We couldn’t reach him for weeks until one day we saw him on the news. He was ok. I grew up quick that year. It was never the same again. I have anxiety every year around hurricane season and I’m finally leaving. Going back to the city was terrifying, it was quiet, no people only military and no electricity for a while.

This Documentary was a real eyeopener for someone like me who lives in the UK. We Never got to see or hear about any of the shit you poor people had to go through during or even after Katrina, the whole situation is a complete and utter disgrace ... and a absolute insult to all those people who lived in that area. The images you see on T.V. are of a glamorous place to live that is rich in history, music and just full of love ... how false does that look to the outside world ? ... these poor people needed help from Day One .. and the whole Community should have been rebuilt at the first given opportunity.

And to think that we have a mental health problem after Katrina. No kidding. No help for the people down there. I was an AmeriCorp volunteer in Mississippi after the storm. The levels of depression and despair I saw was something that we volunteers weren't prepared for. Now with covid in 2020/2021 and beyond the mental health of this nation is something we are all going to have deal with. Peace to all of you who are suffering. This is no lie. New Orleans is a very poor city. And has remained that way for past 16 years since Katrina hit. It’s looks good on the surface. But all the money generated from the French quarter and tourist attractions never goes into bettering the neighborhoods needed. It goes into the rich White neighborhoods and the French Quarter.

I was at Charity Hospital 2 years after Katrina. It was fixable. Just like St Louis Regional Medical Center as insurance companies took over healthcare, indigent care no longer mattered. Bigger and "better" doesn't mean excellent care. Just like St Louis Regional, Charity provided the care that a largely indigent population needed. It is a travesty that these institutions are no longer there for their populations. Damn good care is what you got at Charity and St Louis Regional. Our priorities have changed away from taking care of people to taking care of money.

Broncos won the Super Bowl a couple of years back, didn't do anything for me, can't afford to watch, can't afford tickets or apparel and whether they win or not it doesn't put food on my plate or a roof over my head! Sad thing is in this country it seems that people care more for animals, sports, themselves, materials, than people that are living literally on the streets. Some people that I have met on the streets used to be doctors, nurses, cops, teachers, and I have met some that have been treated like trash from day 1 from their families and that is why they grew up in the system. Of all the people that I met on the streets none of them ever wanted to be homeless, however recently some of them here in Colorado would rather be on the streets than in a shelter for a whole bunch of reasons(dirty, bed bugs, strict rules, theft, fights). They definitely need more shelters here but there is no place or neighbor that will accept a shelter, the will accept a halfway house, a jail, a prison, just no shelters!

I was floating the giant limbs that flew over my house and landed in my front yard.
I waded over to chat them up...they were being held up by BLANCO!!!!!
She would not let them enter the city..
Six hours later they told her to f*CK herself..they were not constrained by Posse COMITATIS ..they rolled ALL night...
They had been lining up all the way across the Causeway Bridge and way up into the North Shore...
They saved around 30,000 people who would have died if they had waited for BLANCO'S MEGALOMANIAC AZZ

aryanavonteese There's a few reasons for that segment and at first I didn't like it either, but I now understand why Lee put it in. Since this occurred before the BP oil spill, it gave the viewer a look at how New Orleans was doing and the sort of energy that the super bowl brought.
But if you keep watching, guest witnesses explain that at the end of the day, it's just a football game and we have to focus on more than just living in the moment.
And then in the second part of this documentary, we see how tragic 2010 was for the region. Yes they won the super bowl, but a few months later the greatest oil spill in history occurs and all of that excitement disappears, and it's corruption all over like with Katrina.

As a Houstonian, my heart always hurt for the people of New Orleans including my friends who are from New Orleans. I cringed at hearing the older lady say how much she hates Texas. At the time of this filming the older lady lived in Humble, Texas. Humble is a beautiful town/neighborhood that even I would consider a blessing. I'm a nurse here in Houston and a lot of my nursing colleagues are from Humble. I went to high school in Humble. Looking at the devastation in New Orleans and how even their own native people in government positions treated the beautiful people of New Orleans... I just find that comment baffling. Here you are in an upscale part of north Houston and your disabled grandson is getting a greater opportunity at life. But you HATE Texas and want to pick up everything from Texas and move it to New Orleans. I hear you loud and clear. But other than than I get the message of the video and this was beautifully told. I will focus my attention on the beauty and not the ungrateful people in this world.
