And let’s not pretend original 70s punk didn’t have it’s share of the same pathos. Grunge was more likely just a natural progression on similar themes (from guys raised on a lot of Led Zeppelin), and also somewhat of a response to the perceived vacuousness of mid-late 80s big hair glam rock. I am quite obviously not a pro music historian and could have this all wrong but I think there’s some validity to my perspective.

I think back in the mid-90s Tori Amos wrote a song about this dynamic on her Boys For Pele album. I believe it is called “Professional Widow”. None of this story stacks up. 1) If you look at Nirvana / SP's 1991 tour dates, they're never in the same state at the same time apart from Boston MA on Sept 23rd where they both played the Axis. 2) Billy says she flew off to Minneapolis - where Nirvana played on 14th October 1991. True, Courtney was in Minneapolis and got with Kurt, but Smashing Pumpkins were touring Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia at that time. The day he's talking about, Nirvana were in Chicago, and SP's were in Alabama.

I think back in the mid-90s Tori Amos wrote a song about this dynamic on her Boys For Pele album. I believe it is called “Professional Widow”. People who were close to them thought she was cheating on him with Billy but neither of them have confirmed (and why would they). I don't think just that contributed to Kurt's suicide or state of mind but it did play a big part.

None of this story stacks up. 1) If you look at Nirvana / SP's 1991 tour dates, they're never in the same state at the same time apart from Boston MA on Sept 23rd where they both played the Axis. 2) Billy says she flew off to Minneapolis - where Nirvana played on 14th October 1991. True, Courtney was in Minneapolis and got with Kurt, but Smashing Pumpkins were touring Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia at that time. The day he's talking about, Nirvana were in Chicago, and SP's were in Alabama.
