Hi Nicola.. just a thought. Why dont you put fuel in your car consistently over each week of the month..say £ 25 per week.. that will prevent your car becoming completely empty. One never knows when youll need to go somewhere in an emergency late at night for example... always good to know you have fuel for those occasions!! And because you have to rely on yourself now too...
    God bless. M xxx

I don't let my tank go under the 1/4 mark anymore, as I was told that your fuel pump has to work harder the lower you go down to empty. Also, you end up moving the crud and stuff at the bottom of the tank into the "flow" and it goes into your engine parts etc.

Depending on the type of pump you have its is generally attached to the side of your engine and pumps fuel through a hose attached to a float that sits at the top of your fuel line. When the tank drops to a certain level the fuel light will come on, you can usually safely drive another 30+ km with the light on depending on your car. Car's are fitted with a fuel filter to protect your engine. If anything driving with an full tank uses more fuel as your car is significantly heavier.

I don’t like to let it get super low, cuz if you run out of gas it will be expensive to get the car going again. The cost of help to get refueled and time lost waiting for help is bad. Also you could break down in an unsafe area! Better to fill up at 3/4 low than having the red light go on!!

Is there any nice safe areas near you that you could take the boys for a picnic so you will have all been out together. The boys will be able to have a run about and you will be able to have your meals which you made at home. I found this a cheap way to take my children out for the day when the weather was nice.

You do not use less petrol by filling it at a quarter tank or a set pound every week.

Cheap days out to the park, beach museum's where donation are discretionary etc will be good. Take a picnic if you have a cool box take drinks and ice creams too.

I'm nearing the end of my budget book and the next one has already arrived. Many thanks for this. It has certainly been a good learning exercise for me. The last few days the category for home is becoming muddled due to some well overdue longterm expenditure on my home and garden. I'm looking forward to starting again in August.

It's funny because I tend to do less in summer. I live in the subtropics and summer is usually hideous so I spend alot of time indoors with the aircon on. The best months of the year are May/June and September/October, perfect temperature, lower humidity, no rain and clear blue skies. I spend the most then because I'm out in the garden more.

Afternoon Nicola - my main budget change this month is that I've not had to add anything to my investments as I got nearly £300 in dividends last month (best month yet as I'm coming up to my 3-year investment journey anniversary in August) so I can keep an extra few £100s in my account. That's going to be useful as I'm having to have some repairs done to my flat after a boiler leak from the flat above, looked at going through the insurance but it's just going to be easier to sort myself. Having to have a door replaced as the water has caused the wood to splinter, and I'm also going to need the floor replaced in one room as it looks like there's some water trapped underneath. Hopefully it won't cost me too much to sort!

Hi Nicola. A quick suggestion if you are doing a new layout for a 12 month budget book if there is a spare page could you maybe put in a 52 (or 26) envelope challenge spread. Colouring in those little envelopes make me feel very motivated - and no I have never done a 52 envelope in one shot 😮

Gas is important, don't wait until you super low to get any. You never know if there will be an emergency and you need to get some where or if the prices go up a lot and you won't be able to get as much. Also, it's not good for your car. I know you want to give your kids experiences and do a bunch of things which is good but can you find other things that are free or very low cost? Like would they like to make a fort in the living room and you could have a movie night with stuff from the library? Maybe even eat your dinner in there and you all "camp" in there overnight? Those types of things that are kind of some and easy to do but may create great memories.
