Sawyer Products SP150 Coupling for Water Filtration Cleaning www.amazon.com/dp/B018NJC1A6/...

One thing most people forget when discussing the Sawyer squeeze, the coupler and backflushing is to keep the right parts sterile. E.g. I work with a Cnoc bag and the coupler to press dirty water into a clean bottle. The Cnoc bag should be considered "contaminated" at this point. Prior to cleaning, you should not use it to backflush. You could use a clean water bottle to backflush, just keep the dirty parts separate from the clean ones
Nice video
If you don't want to buy a coupler, you can make a DIY coupler with two soda bottle caps. Just put a teflon coated or other non-stick pan on the stove medium heat, give the pan time to warm up (when water droplets dance across it's hot enough), place the bottle caps on the pan top down until the bottle cap tops start to melt (about 30 seconds). Pull them off the pan and align them up, then push the bottle caps together, welding the plastic caps top-to-top, dunk your new creation in cold water to harden the plastic and prevent further melting, then drill a 1/2" hole in the center of the caps. Clean up the hole with a sharp knife or exacto blade..... Voila, you now have a 4.5 Gram coupler for the cost of two bottle caps you were probably going to throw away.
The coupler you just created acts just like a cyclone tube as well so it can be used for a gravity feed or as a backflush connector
dude, coupler costs 2 bucks....
The coupler is $2.19 on Amazon..
@@ModernGentleman $10 in Canada
@@uhadonejob oof 😬
Great idea using the adaptor to both clean and fill bottles. Thanks a bunch for sharing
Although it may not have seemed necessary to demonstrate a lot of these steps for some viewers, I however appreciated the visual demonstration. So many times CZcamsrs are filming something, talk about how to do something but never demonstrate the steps, though mundane, may be just what the viewer needed to see. In this case it was exactly what I wanted to know. I just bought the Sawyer kit that came with that blue adapter and I couldn't figure out what it was good at doing or even what it was for because even Sawyer didn't show in the instructions. Thank You, thank you, SUBSCRIBED!!!
Really cool. Thanks for the tips👍
That adapter came with my sawyer I purchased in February of 2017.
Oh, I see that you put it in your description. Thank you.
Awesome. Really like the filters for weight, but hate the hassle part. Great info
+Nature Calls same lol
Awesome video mate.
Very helpful and CHEAP. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks great video
Use the coupler with a 1L bottle. Bottles are stronger than bladders
Good backflushing info. Here is what's needed, though: 1) Gravity system. 1a) Rear-opening dirty water bag with hang-grommet(s), three-ish liters, sub-60grams, 1b) matching threads, 1c) pre-filter adapter with disposable paper (e.g. coffee filter paper) inserts and matching threads, 1d) a check-valve output adapter to enable bottles and prevent overflow. No hoses anywhere.
You can also make a coupler using two of those SmartWater sport caps. First, pop the blue part out of one of them and remove the flip top. Next, you can put the blue part from the other one through the ring on the first one and pop it into place. They will generally stay together with friction but you may want to glue them. I'm not sure of the weight--I'm guessing somewhere between the official coupler and the tornado tube.
Also, just an FYI, the first generation of the Squeeze filters don't have the nub inside like the newer ones do (I was an early adopter), so the coupler is definitely the way to go for those.
bcgobraves Thanks for watching and the advice@
Excellent thanks so much 👍👍👍
You should check out Adam Willard's Squeeze "tornado tube". You can make a squeeze bag gravity feed into a 1 liter bottle or platy. I bought mine at Hobby Town and it was called a Vortex Tube. You can also find them at educational stores or on Amazon.
Genius Idea.
For those asking the couplers are currently back on sale from Amazon. Just ordered myself another one since they dont stay in stock long.
I have had two of these filters and both of them had issues with the white o-ring falling out of the filter. As you can imagine this can be a cross contamination problem when dirty water leaks onto your clean water container.
I find I use this at home more than on the trail, despite owning a Berkey with flouride/arsenic filter. But after 50 gal or so, it starts to leave grainy white stuff in the clean water. I use water from the dehumidifyer (on all the time). No flouride. But water gets dirty b/c of the open design of the dehumidifier. So I use the Sawyer. & no flouride. If it werent for having to squeeze manually, Id ditch the Berkey. The dehumidifier requires cleaning often too. (Scum forms if not).
vg thx4 link & info thumbed up
Nice video - but sheezus, you might want to cut out the 40-second intro. I'm sure you lose a LOT of viewers because of that. Maybe aim for 5-7 seconds?
agreed . intro is too long .
Doug Greene Damn, that’s what I was about to say.
Wow! I followed your link to the coupler, but found $8.93 on the other end, not $1.99. Sawyer got proud of that thing all of the sudden...
They come with the filter now.
The hose from Camelbak bladders also *just fit* through the SmartWater caps.
+Bruce Hodson Good info!!!
Also for a better bladder source, just hook the sawyer up to a hydrapak. It's on amazon for 16 bucks and it's practically indestructable.
That adapter has a bad issue of the sealed pressure while trying to filter, and it leaks. I wonder if you have actually used it on the trail...
Can you send me the link where I can buy the blue adapter? Thank you.
If Amazon and/or Sawyer aren't options for the connector check out YT vid: Sawyer Squeeze Tornado Tube Mod suggested by Jon Fong (Flat Cat Gear) by Hiram Cook. Hiram has several videos on Sawyer Filters.
They are back on Amazon. The benefit to this one is that you dont have to do any mods and it weights 0.11oz vs the 0.80 from the tornado. You can pretty much carryinv 7 of these and still come out lighter than the tornado tube. But Im sure this may benefot someone. Tha ks for sharing
that smart water cap will work fine . . . till the flip top breaks off , usually within 2 or 3 days . the back flushing idea is good . i like the adaptor too . good stuff , thanks for the tips .
btw , i can't stand the word " hacks " . you aren't " hacking " the filter , you are modifying the use . all in all , good info .
Pappy
never had one break yet!
Have you heard anything about the "Mini" really clogging up here lately and people going back the the "Squeeze" more than the "Mini's" ?
What is the music at the intro? Thanks.
That coupler comes with the sawyer...
Do you have a link for the bag?
I have been looking everywhere in two provinces in Canada. It appears that they don't have that sports top flip top on our smart water bottles up here. Maybe could you mail me 4 the sport cap flip tops ??
I have looked at all sizes but it seems the sports flip cap is not avail in Canada
Amazon is still out of stock on the couplings, so I went to Sawyer directly, $2.99 each. Okay, no biggie. Then at checkout, Sawyer wanted to charge over $15.00 for shipping a 0.1 ounce item. Anyone have luck finding the couplers elsewhere that has reasonable shipping fees?
+Gary Leese Not yet but you can sign up for their notification list. Im sure they will be back in stock soon.

back in stock on Amazon
what is the name of that female to female connector (blue) can you send a link to where you got it?
Thanks for watching. Check the link in my description and it will also link you to where you can buy it.
It just amazes me that the Sawyer company can't see these simple mods. I really dislike having to fill that tiny roll up bottle from the stream. It's a pain. Why can't they make an adapter for a wide mouth to small? Why can't they provide a funnel that screws in at the narrow end?
I drink the water without ANY filter and all the bugs and critters. It's natural! ;)
Reality Check
yeah when SHTF... you'll be drinkin that good ol water won't ya!... with all those nuclear bombs going off and all the chemicals in the water... good luck.
I do the same. It just taste more natural
Can you post the Amazon link to the blue adapter ring you were demonstrating?
I just added the link in my description. When I went to get it it looks like Amazon is currently out of stock. I received mine several days ago so I think they would be in stock again soon. Also the link describes the part so incase you cant find ut on Amazon you should be able to find it through other vendors. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
+Shonryu Thanks for the quick reply and all your nice videos.
+Tony Pierce Your more than welcome and thanks for the positive feedback!
back in stock on amazon
Great, thanks again!
Can't do much about hate when people hate fighting with plastic caps eh
What kind of bladder is that
It an Evernew bladder
Amazon is charging $15.35 for that plastic coupler. That's more than half the price of a Sawyer Squeeze! They should just include the coupler with the filter. What a ripoff.
Totally agree with you. Im sure you could go down to the local hardware store and find something that would work.
I thought the same thing! I read on the Sawyer site just now that they are going to start including the coupler with some of the models. Didn't say which ones though. I might try the hardware store.
I use a tornado tube. $3 for 4 of them on ebay.
i looked those up . they are restricted in the center , which would reduce flow considerably . but thanks for the idea .
They are $2.71 on amazon with free shipping as an "add-on" item. I just ordered two of them.
Seriously, they should have included that adapter in the All-in-one system instead of that syringe.
If you use an idea that don't come with the product...you are risking any warranty to the product. . .and your app to break the filter because you're using it in way that the filter wasn't recommended to be used...
WIZE MAN ;)
gasket not grommet
That’s crazy that the adapter costs $8+ tho
I just got a sawyer squeeze micro and it came with it. Really the way it should have been from the start.
Tom Willard not Adam, sorry.
$15 for the coupler!
Tornado tube on ebay will do the same thing. 4 for $3.99 from china.....
$1.99 you say 🤣🤣
$20 in Australia. What a BS...
intro too long. its dumb
No body wants 30 sec intro.. just get to the facts.
