The smart water sports cap fits into the clean side. Use that slightly unscrewed to allow air out as it fills. It will grip well enough to hang full from the filter. Once water is filtered tighten the clean bottle and back flush the filter and remove to use. This allows you rid of the custom cap, the amazon squirt cap and platypus bag.
I should point something out that a lot of people are not aware of. Plastic bottles such as the type used for bottled water often contain BPA. Fine, most bottled water companies have stopped using this type of plastic but it's not a guarantee, we should not be using them at all. Also note, even if the plastic bottle is BPA Free, this will not guarantee it is safe to use. In a 2012 study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health, researchers from the University of Calgary took 76 samples of water from water bottles of elementary school students. They found that nearly two-thirds of the samples had bacterial levels that exceeded that of drinking water guidelines, which may have been the result of "the effect of bacterial regrowth in bottles that have remained at room temperature for an extended period," researchers wrote in the study. The problem is with the plastic, as it cracks (microscopic cracks), bacteria forms in the cracks and this leads to contaminants. Consider your "mod" with the folded plastic bottle used as a "scoop". I realize that you are using it to fill the dirty bag but still you are putting more contaminants into your bag. You could be transferring viral contaminant witch the filter is not rated to remove. I liked the video up till that point but I really think we should stress the idea of NOT using disposable bottles. Have a good one bro!
I believe your flow rate into your clean bag would be more faster and efficient if you drill a small hole into your adapter cap. This will release the pressure inside your clean bottle/bag so the air can escape and reduce the pressure for the clean water to enter. Hope this helps :-)
Hi Bruce, I have tested it and it works well to speed up the flow of the water that is why I wanted to share it with you and the rest here :-). Cheers!
Nice video, my 2 cents on some suggestions ... put some Teflon tape on the threads of your smart water bottle and water bladder. I also like to carry a shammy cloth or sponge to soak up water if it is hard to gather.
I use the Sawyer Squeeze or PointOne filter. It is a little bigger than the mini but good for a million gallons. I use a mesh bag to hang the filter for gravity filtration. I use a piece of vinyl tubing to put into the container I'm filling to prevent spills. It weighs 3 oz including the 1 liter bag, filter, spout, and 2 caps included in the SP-129 model. Once the filter is used it will weigh a little more due to water that stays in the membrane.
Backflushing is best done under pressure that the bag or bottle do not provide as does the plunger. I go with the manufacturers advice. Just running water backwards thru the filter is not adequate backflushing.
To have a longer hose/tubing, instead of the straw you can use an 8mm transparent tubing (like those used in the aquariums). Can be purchased at any hardware shops or at ACE Hardware. That way you can have a longer tubing if you want to.
Thanks for the tips. Just got the Sawyer Mini. Was using the sawyer 3 way filter attached to bladder in my pack. Gonna try this one next trip. I'll be checking out the bladders you mentioned also.
Another argument for having a real cup is that the main reason a Sayer clogs is because users fail to run the water through a bandana, or other piece of cotton, before running it through a Sawyer. Whether you boil water, or use purification tablets, or use a Sawyer, water should first be strained through a piece of cotton cloth. Using real cups, or a pot, makes this far easier. Though the fear of water is often irrational. It amazes me that people are afraid to drink the same water they willingly swim in. The truth is that non-stagnant water is almost never dangerous, except sometimes in way that none of these purification methods can change.
A paper coffee filter can be used as well and will work better than a cotton cloth, I form a sort of ball out of the coffee filter which then is attached by tying a string around the coffee filter to the filter and tie it tight.
If you buy the 1L smartwater and cut off the top 2 inches, it makes a nice flexible tall cup, which fits nicely nested onto the bottom of 700 mL smartwater. Takes up up very little additional space.
I use the same system for water. I had a bunch of the old Platy bottles to use as my squeeze bag and it worked fine. BUT when I tried to set my wife up with the same system I found the new platy bags have a different thread. Seems that platy changed the threads on the mouth of the bottle. So if you have the old platy bottle it may work just fine.
Keep both halves of the throw-away water bottle, then get a $2 "tornado Tube" bottle connector from your local toy store. Now use the bottom as a scoop, line the top with a bandanna or paper coffee filter, use the connector to screw the adapter to the dirty bag, and pre-filter the dirty water so the filter doesn't clog as soon.
If you buy the 1L smartwater bottle and cut off the top 2 inches, it makes a flexible tall cup, which fits nicely nested onto the bottom of 700 mL smartwater bottle. Takes up up very little additional space.
I have just bought one these and now i have watched Your Video I think I have got it sussed .I like the idea of cutting down a bottle for scupping and how you cut the straw down for flushing. where did you get the lid from to fit the straw on to, and what would you call the lid that you pull out when cooking .Regards Brooky
I don't know what you guys are talking about when you say don't use platypus bags. I have 2-2liter bags and my Sawyer Mini screws on straight and have no leaking issues. I bought these platypus bags about 4 months ago and they have been great. Don't know if I got an older style bag or not but they work great.
All of the ones I had tested leaked on the sides. When I would pour mine so I had concerns about cross contamination. That and the threads didnt match. That may have changed now but I have never had the a ame problem w the evernew bladders.
Shonryu B Was on a forum and several people said the same thing--it fits until it doesn't. They think you are gradually stripping the threads that don't really match.
My experience last year is exactly as the video describes. It leaks. Perhaps Sawyer or Platypus has changed the threads. I could see that the thread pitch on the Platypus did not match the Sawyer.
Could i just intervene to say the old type Platy bottles are a perfect fit for the sawyer The new 2 LTR ones do leak because they changed the thread a while back.....the way to identify the old ones is a blue rectangle or square with a platypus inside Hope this helps
For the bottle adapter, i use something similar: www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-Adapters-Hydration-Packs/dp/B00EURFBKI?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage I dont' use it for it's intended purpose, but now i'm finding that this sucker is awesome for trying different ways to filter water. I've also used those connectors with some soft sided bags to make a gravity filter; Just use a hole punch on the corners of the bags and run a string or whatever through them. Sure it takes a little longer with the sawyer mini, but no effort, other than fillling your water bottle. I've def seen the half a Nestle bottle trick too. I saw another guy use a ziplock, with the corner cut off to fill the bags. Much faster since you can get a lot more water at one time, and probably just as light. And if one breaks, you can always just bring and extra zip lock or two.
This is an older video. I have another one that has a few more things you might want to check out. Also I started using a cut down caprisun which works much better than both the cut down bottle and a ziplock. A little more durable than the ziplock and can gather more than the cut doen bottle and packs to nothing. czcams.com/video/kvGbFWnTk4U/video.html
Were did you say can buy adaptor from to backflush could not make out what you said ???? Thought it was mini bore designs????? But can not find the website Many thanks ian
+mikelisacarb Well Amazon lists them as 59.53g for the 32oz and the 8.50gm for the 96oz. it seems the 32oz is made of thicker plastic than the 96oz. Unless you're a Gram Winnie, it's no big deal. I'm looking at ease of use over weight.
+Sinfonian Barelytone the advantage to the adapter is that it also makes it easer when Im filling up. But shortly after this video was uploaded I started using the cap from the Smart Water bottles. The only downside is for longer trips is starts to fall short compared to the adapter.
Maybe I missed it, but where did you find the light grey part which you attach the tube to and which screws onto your platypus? Or did it come with your filter? It wasn't included with my mini nor my squeeze, in any case...
I actually like the HydroBlu (Versa Flow) better. The Sawyer includes the worthless bag, and the equally useless syringe for back washing/cleaning the filter. The Versa can be back washed with another bottle of clean water because of the rubber seal at the outlet side, i also like the soft silicone cap better than the hard plastic cap on the Sawyer. i have noticed the threads on the Versa are better then the Sawyer when connecting to bottles and the Platypus folding bags. Versa for the win! About half the price, and comes with more usable accessories.
The bag sucks. I bought the three pack of the liter bags, and they tend to leak. But I will probably bring a new unit when I go to Cuba, so....that works.
Serious question if you're filter is clogged and no water will come through how are you going to backwash it if you don't have any clean water on hand would you use the contaminated bag with contaminated water to flush it out wouldn't you just be introducing contaminated water to the clean end of the Sawyer?
Ya using dirty water just means you're going to be plugging up both sides of the filter. But unless you are filtering mud puddle water, the sawyer filters don't plug up super fast. With decent water sources you should always have enough clean water to back flush after filtering.
Could you please post a link to were to buy the straw adapter lid that you recommend in tip #4? Can't quite make out where you mentioned to order it. Thanks.
Hi thanks for watching. This video is a little dated now but I personally use a smart water bottle cap for backflushing now amd have been for awhile. But here's the link incase you still want it. www.minibulldesign.com/ProductCart/pc/home.asp
+jaybird33081 I just made a video on it. Feel free to check it out Watch "Sawyer mini and 3 hacks using a Smartwater bottle" on CZcams czcams.com/video/LXnQ3mCBo9s/video.html
At the time I was able to get it from Mini Bull designs. I dont think they sell them anymore. But I found out another trick that works and is easier to use. Use a smart water bottle and the 22oz ones come with a flip up cap. You can insert the cap into the drinking part of the fliter and backflush using the smartwater bottle that way. Also makes it easier for when you want to drink your from your bottle so I save the caps now and use them on tje bigger bottles.
Thanks for your excellent vid on tips and mods. Mini Bull Designs does still offer the gray Mini Filter adapter and I ordered two today. I plan on cycling through the Great Basin on the GDMBR and will be using a couple of 2L Platybags with an Evernew 2L as the dirty water reservoir (I was going to use another Platybag as the "dirt bag" until I saw your recommendation for the Evernew due to the threading issue). That's 6 L all up plus my cycle bottles. Since I'm not sweating over every ounce and already have the Platybags it makes more sense to roll them away for the dry stretches instead of using the smaller Smart bottles. In my neck of the woods, the 22oz Smart bottle is a rarity though the larger and smaller size are easy to find. So the adapter is the perfect solution. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
No way to really tell that I know of. But the mini is good for up to 100,000 gallons and the squeeze 1,000,000 gallons. so chances are your going to either break it or lose it before you get the max usage out of it.
The filter doesn't ever stop working if cared for. But you can't perfectly clean it so over time the flow rate is reduced by the filtered materials. Once the flow rate is drastically reduced it's time for a new one
Shonyru, thanks for the amazing tips. At around 7:42 you mentioned the sites where we can find that nipple adapter you suggest using on the platypus but I can't quite make them out. Can you please tell me what the site(s) are or what the brand of that screw top is? Thanks
+Karen Brown thanks for the message. I should have added it in the description awhile ago as many times as it's been asked. Just did based on reading this comment. Thanks for watching!!!
Just watched video. Good info. Only thing is ....the link for the adapter with the straw doesn't pull up that one ...looks different. Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong
Good stuff, and very helpful, but does anyone really need a scoop made from a water bottle? I'm never without a minimum of two cups and one pot in the woods, and they all scoop water very well. I also carry a collapsible cup in a pocket because they work well for a number of things, and I have it with me, even when my pack is at base camp. Saving weight is nice, but sometimes it's also extremely dangerous, and too many backpackers, particularly those who practice ultralight backpacking, don't know where the dividing line I until it's far too late.
I carry a single TI cookpot for cooking which could be used for scouping water. Especially since its sole intended purpose is to cook in. Boiled water = purified water. But I would perfer to to not take the chance of cross contamination in my cookpot. For the 0.10oz weight of a cut down water and peace of mind Im willing to carry it. I agree that there is a balance. I used to go SUL a lot. But Im realizing with time Ive taken some risks which I was lucky nothing bad ever happened and its not so much about how fast you go but also enjoying it every step of the way. I now carry some comfort items with me and still manage to stay in the. lower part of UL and have found that's the sweet spot for myself personally while backpacking. To each their own and the ability to be resourceful, knowledge, and skill level play a big role in these decisions as well.
+Tonahuac Theonewhocarriesthelight I've done that before, too. Works just as good. But, a bit more expensive option if you're looking at pro/con of the two.
"Don't use this, use this instead", "you don't want to use one of these"..............how about some NAMES of what "these" are???? YOU know what "these" mean, but how about telling us what "these" are called and where you can get "these"??? Otherwise, your video went way too fast and lost me at "these"!!! Thumbs Down!
Really outstanding video! I have used Sawyer filters almost all over the world (5 continents) and they have never let me down.

Great idea, I planned on using smart water bottles the whole way. From what I hear the brand is fairly easy to find on the trail.
Awesome ideas. I use the large Sawyer 1 gallon bags, as a dirty bag, because it has a wide mouth and is easier to fill, but it does weigh 3.75 oz.
I believe your flow rate into your clean bag would be more faster and efficient if you drill a small hole into your adapter cap. This will release the pressure inside your clean bottle/bag so the air can escape and reduce the pressure for the clean water to enter. Hope this helps :-)

use a collapsible wide mouth Nalgene bottle for your dirty bottle. Jet Flow make a adapter so the Sawyer will fit the Nalgene wide mouth.
But what is the weight of the collapsable Nalgene. Nalgene's tend to be so heavy!
Sorry you bought that back flush tool. The flip top on your smartwater bottle works the same exact way for free.
It also helps for filling up too so multi use item

I leave the one I got at home and only use it when putting it away after an outing.

do u know if the mini will thread onto or screw onto the source bag? thx karen
Im not sure if it does because I dont use those. But chances are if the top is like a soda bottle they should.

How do you know howmany liters you have left to filter ?

For all new readers you don't need it just put that end into the cap of the smart bottle and back flush with clean filtered water !
wouldnt it actually be lighter and more efficient/reliable to just buy the whole sawyer gravity filter system and be done with it?

"Don't use this, use this instead", "you don't want to use one of these"..............how about some NAMES of what "these" are???? YOU know what "these" mean, but how about telling us what "these" are called and where you can get "these"??? Otherwise, your video went way too fast and lost me at "these"!!! Thumbs Down!
