    The blue screw on adapter is actually called "Cleaning Coupling" and is specifically designed to back clean this filter using a water bottle, so no need for the Smart Water cap itself but, that works too, I suppose.

  • @Craigeek

    In addition to using the blue adapter "cleaning coupling" with my smart water bottle, I use it to connect the filter to a hose and back flush. That works pretty well even on a thru-hike. Be sure to knock the filter while back flushing to dislodge the junk in the hollow fibers.

    You can use a smart water bottle or life water bottle as a dirty water container and thread the sawy on to it on the inlet side. Then you can drink right from the sawyer using a cap on the outlet side.

      Too much pressure will break the filter though. Sawyer recommends against attaching them to a tap for that reason.

    Question: I just purchased the micro Sawyer and I'm trying to make it filter by using gravity - it doesn't work. And I don't know why! I've connected one bottle to each end simulating having one with dirty water to be filtered to the other. The water bottle just hangs there, with no water passively sippering through. Suggestions?

    • @delongdesign
      @delongdesign Před 2 lety +2

      If air can't get out of the clean bottle, then water can't get in. It becomes pressurized. The solution is to LIGHTLY thread it onto the blue coupler, just enough to keep it held, but loose enough to allow air to escape around the threads. I had the same problem and thought something was wrong with my filter. Loosening up the threads got it flowing.

    • @elisebrown5157
      @elisebrown5157 Před 3 měsíci

      You could always bring a "clean water" CNOC bag. Or maybe even use the actual Sawyer bag for backwashing.

  • @maria21mhmh
    @maria21mhmh Před 3 lety +2

    Could the filter not just attach to the water bottle and drink straight from the water bottle with the filter attached?? to skip the bag filling and filtering into the bottle?

    • @joel.ha.
      @joel.ha. Před rokem

      Yes but then you squeeze the bottle enough times and it will break/ leak. If you're just going out for a couple weeks that is fine

  • @Temporalplace

    Why use sports cap when you can use just an adapter to back flush ? I do not get it.

    • @maintaineveryday4732
      @maintaineveryday4732 Před 3 lety

      instant bidet over your cat hole. no need to pack out toilet paper. saves you 900 ounces.
      oh and also the adapters hole is bigger than my sports cap so the sports cap can push harder for that initial back flush.

  • @rzldzl
    @rzldzl Před 4 lety +8

    Why not backflush with the ring adapter rather than switching to the sports cap?

    • @Temporalplace
      @Temporalplace Před 3 lety +1

      Same question lol ))

    • @GregoryRobertsLx
      @GregoryRobertsLx Před 3 lety +6

      Because the sports nozzle fits the tiny hole that the water comes out, similar to the syringe. Using the ring adaptor will not adequately push water through the hole at a high enough pressure to prevent channeling in the filter. Channeling will decrease the effectiveness of the filter. Happy hiking!

    • @wyrdedwurd
      @wyrdedwurd Před 3 lety +1

      @@GregoryRobertsLx just not true. The Sawyer coupling works perfectly, it's intended purpose is partly for backflushing. The pressure has nothing to do with the fitting. In fact, one could achieve a greater pressure with a threaded fitting than without.

    • @chrisladouceur4093
      @chrisladouceur4093 Před 3 lety

      Really need to use the syringe. Fact is it takes A LOT of pressure to properly backflush the Squeeze. You won’t get enough directed pressure squeezing a smart bottle, or similar, with a semi-fitting sports cap nor with a bottle and threaded attachment. The website goes in-depth with the actual required force and why most of these other tricks aren’t effective

  • @reidtillery2856
    @reidtillery2856 Před 2 lety +5

    Tip: Fill the Sawyer bag with the bottom half of a Smartwater bottle. Just cut the bottle in two. No dipping the bag in a stream required. Next, if you're squeezing the bag, that's not the best way to do it. The best way I've found is to put the full dirty-water bag into the nylon mesh bag which comes with the filter, with the filter attached to the dirty-water bag. Using a coupler, attach a clean-water container (Smartwater bottles are great) and let gravity do the work. You'll need to unscrew the Smartwater bottle from the coupler a bit to allow air to enter. Used this way, the Sawyer bags are very serviceable. Plus if you're using another Sawyer bag for your clean water, put a blue PepsiCola lid on it. Put a red CocaCola cap on your dirty water Sawyer bag. Blue and red will be your indicators as to which bag is which. Cheers.
