Thanks for the quick video and not forcing us to watch a 15 minute short story. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub and kind words! We really appreciate it
I agree, 15min videos can be tiresome to watch.
Holly crap Kenny, I found you randomly on a CZcams Video post! OSS
straight to the point - I didn't waste my life trying to find out what the numbers look like
We try not to waste :)
Very interesting, explains why it's so fast against the clock 👌Look forward to the next videos 🎬
Thanks for the comment! It sure does feel faster than it should be and this is perhaps why.
Track video is going live tomorrow, hope you enjoy that too! 👌
Thanks for the quick results
Thanks for the kind words!
Glad you made this video and showed us what the car makes compared to the mk7 looking forward to the track video! If possible would love to see it on track with some better tires nobody has done that yet!
Thanks! We're super excited to see what it's like on track too. We're going to start from stock and build up from there, solving any weak points as we go.
Great info man. THANKS
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words!
High quality video that's straight to the point. Can't wait to see how much it puts out once the engine is worn in at about 1000ish miles. I know with the Audi TTRS they do the staged approach as well until the engine is fully worn in from the factory so this should be interesting. Subbed also btw. ;)
Thanks for watching and your kind words!! Thanks for the sub too. We'll for sure get it on the dyno again before we do further tuning.
Awesome!, thanks for this one!. Yes my Mk8R feels som strong, so this is the reson :)
Thanks! It's odd isn't it, they really do feel like more than 313HP!
I appreciate people like you who make these video's short and to the point, thank you.
It's not really scientific though mate, because you would need to have tested the Mk 7.5 on the same day basically on the same dyno straight after or before, the Mk 8, using exactly the same correction figures and ambient air temps, etc, for a real direct comparison. Also strapped down properly, and doing several runs and taking an average.
Absolutely, we’re not saying this is the definitive comparison between the MK7.5 and MK8, just an indication of how different it is.
All over our social media you’ll see us saying that the dyno graphs are just a snapshot of a cars performance at a specific time in specific conditions, and direct comparisons can only really be drawn when run in the same conditions etc
When you get a chance to drive both stock cars back to back like we’ve done (remember, there’s a world outside of social media and we don’t post everything) you immediately notice the difference in output, which is reflected in this graph.
If enough people want us to do a comparison on the same day, with the two cars in stock form, we can look to do this
@@RegalAutosport Thank you for the reply mate, and I'm glad you saw I was making a polite but important point, and not just posting bollocks to criticize for the sake of it.
I really like the car and almost bought one (a Mk 7.5 R), but after driving one, an RS3, an A45S, and a few i30N's (I worked at a Hyundai dealership at the time lol), I decided that I had a lot more fun in an M140i, so bought one of those instead.
Good video though, and as I say, thank you for taking the time to make it.
Manual 7.5R (310) Stage 1. . . Interested in any decent golf GTi/R content, Nice short and to the point video, look forward to track day and future content. . .subbed 👍
Welcome! Track day video should be going up next week :D. Thanks for the sub and your feedback is greatly appreciated
Subscribed for future Golf 8 R content! Thanks!
Thank you!! Really appreciate it
Same!
@@Pyrotech1620 Thank you!
Me too.
demystified!! Thanks for making it just right, not long with all the details.. What a car.. still hate that interior, but what a car.
Thank you for your kind words and watching, the interior is actually growing on us...
Awesome, great car too
Sure is! Thanks for watching
Stunning car fair play 👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
great to see this, deffo more than the factory’s “320”
Thanks for watching!
@@RegalAutosport thanks for creating
Crazy it’s put out 340bhp on only 200 miles. Once it’s been run in I can imagine it outputting another 15-20bhp. No wonder it keeps up with an A45s 🥵
200 miles is more than enough for an engine to break-in
Most engines have already been passed the break-in procedure in the factory prior to the delivery to the customer.
@@ravenheart369 no it isn’t. 200 miles is still not enough miles for the engine to properly loosen up. Optimal break in would be 2000-3000 miles for the car to be outputting it’s absolute peak.
@@bmf5420 Go search on Google.
If you don't believe the Google, ask a professional engine builder.
Every single engine has been broken up in the factory.
@@ravenheart369 The break in procedure from factory is not the on-road break in period. Which is why manufactures often give break-in guidelines in their manual. A Porsche engineer himself literally says “When we do our engine test, the metals inside the engine never reach the temperatures they would when driven on the street since the test session is fairly short. In other words, the bearings, pistons and cylinders never get a chance to thermally expand to their maximum. Therefore, there is little wear on the moving components. But when you drive a car on the street, the engine parts expand considerably more because of the heat being generated from the engine running for an extended period of time. No matter how tight the tolerances are, there is always a slight amount of expansion in the material. The moving parts can wear quickly if exposed to excessive heat and not always in a uniform way. We also constantly vary the speed and allow the engine to run at both high and low RPM’s”
@@bmf5420 First of all, this context doesn't mention anything about the mileage.
However, when you rebuild an engine, you should do the proper break-in procedure in the first 50 km's.
One of the best ones is: Allow the engine temp (oil/water) to reach a normal level, select the 3rd gear, do some pulls from 2000 RPM to the redline and when you reach the readline let off the throttle and let the RPM to drop back to 2000 and do a pull again, usually 10 times would be enough! (The reason is beyond the scope of this discussion.)
I've done many many engines like that and none of them has ever suffered from oil-burning issues and all of them reached their maximum output.
Again, if you don't believe me or Google, just ask any professional engine builder and let's see what they will say.
Will definitely swap my Mk7.5 for one of these .... brilliant all rounder 👍🏻
You'll love it!
For the price, i feel like an RS3 could be a better choice, 2.5L 5cy Turbo is a very sweet engine
@@FortunateLee98 s3 is the same price as golf, rs3 is going to be a lot more expensive
@@tzajc2 used market mate, i'm aware that the RS3 is more expensive, but 2nd hand low milage and great condition it's around the price of a new MK8 Golf R
@@FortunateLee98 used rs3 goes for 70k now canadian lol
At the wheels insane!
this is nor 'merica so we talk at the flywheel.
@@RegalAutosport you should be providing the power at the wheels.
See above comment
Impressive. To 60, these things are really quick. That explains it.
They do seem to be destroying most cars they shouldn’t be able to compete with!!
Does this mk8 Gold R has a bigger turbo than the IS38 in mk7/7.5 R's? And if yes it would be nice to find and publish the differences.
It sure does look that way! We'll look into it.
Well to be honest it is more like 400HP, when you replace the stuff from factory that suffocates it, GPF, Turbo muffler, small intake and software limitations.
Probably not far off!
so i wonder if the R fitted with the Arka makes any more power and also does performance pack up power too ??
We'd love to get a PP + Akra car on the dyno to compare, if anyone has one, come on down for a free dyno comparison!
Unsure if I like these, but I think run one on a set of 18inch td 1.2s and lowering springs will look 👌
That’s a lovely combo!
Yeah, downsize the wheel and up the profile of the tyre one size, and run something like an ado8r, r888 will look an absolute weapon I think
When was the 7.5 dyno'd for comparison? Same day?
Nope
This wasn’t anything that hasn’t already been apparent since the Mk was born. There’s always more than what’s advertised.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Do these engines not need running in a bit easier for a while, or ok to go hard from delivery miles?
There are 0 running in instructions from VW and we've had customers tune their cars and do track days from delivery miles.
We of course make sure that everything is up to temperature before applying load.
Maybe VW studied the aftermarket tuning progress and came to the conclusion that they too could afford to safely turn up the wick on the EA888 ECU after all. Or maybe mk8 has improved hardware, but I am leaning towards theory A.
Yea I'd like to know too although I think I heard that mk8 Golf R has a different turbo compared to mk7/7.5's IS38 turbo. It would be interesting if someone in the know could confirm this.
That's a great theory, it'd be awesome to hear from them on this.
it sure does have a different turbo @bokniNYC
Spot on 👍
am keen to know if the turbo on the mk8R can be a bolt-on to the mk7.5R
Interesting idea! We’ll look into it
That would make for a nice OEM upgrade if possible.
Nope it can't its completely different, not even IHI anymore. Watch the APR Tuning video they explain it.
We’ve the clubsport mk8, same engine turbo etc and that is no way the figure there claiming
Be interesting to see what you get from one of those because when ours was dyno’d it came back saying 322bhp peak after 4000miles on the clock and 3 runs for the average
Be interesting to have your Clubsport on the dyno, back to back with our MK8R and see if they are different or close :)
My S3 8V was measured at 325hp on the wheels, instead of the claimed 310. So again, 15hp difference
Probably made that at the flywheel mate
Since this is a chassis dynometer, shouldn't the numbers be in whp not bhp?
If you are in the land of the Unites States of American then yes, but in Europe we use flywheel horsepower. Often that's a guesstimation of losses on how the operator feels that day BUT we use software which calculates the losses on the rundown, for a more accurate calculate of the flywheel power.
hope that helps!
Does the horsepower increase slightly as a car gets a few thousand miles on it? If so, what do you think the horsepower will increase to once it fully loosens up?
Following
I guess we'll find out! But bear in mind, that dyno results are only a snapshot of a vehicles output at a specific point in time with the specific variables e.g. environmental factors. So a few hp here or there isn't really a definitive 'MK8 Golf R gains 2hp per 1000 miles' etc
Actually the correct terminology about an engine that's completed break-in would be "fully tightened up". hahaha
Your previous rolling road test recorded 340 bhp, so why has it lost 12 bhp?
As we always talk about, a rolling road is only a snapshot of a vehicles output at a specific period of time, in specific operating conditions and the cars health.
Not to mention that our dyno software has changed, as stated in the video which adds another variable.
Or maybe we should have run it in 🙃
Interesting, didn’t think it would make that much power, as a few of the others tuners who’ve tested are known to inflate their figures.
Does the Dyno mode on these new models run all 4 wheels as opposed to just the front wheels like in previous models?
Yeah we were massively surprised too… it does feel much faster on the road, between a stock 7 and 7.5 with GPF on stage 1. So I guess this is why.
You run MK7 + MK8 in AWD mode unless your dyno doesn’t allow front and rear axles to be synchronised
@@RegalAutosport ah ok, didn’t know that. My next comment was going to be, if you could, would the car make more power on the Dyno with less drivetrain loss? Just me thinking with my very limited mechanical knowledge 😜
Don’t really understand your question really but our dyno calculates drivetrain losses on the rundown (per run) and not a random loss assigned by how the operator feels that day - so we can’t fudge the figures unless we tap the brakes on the rundown, but the the plot would look whack
@@RegalAutosport sorry not what I meant. Not at all disputing the figures you have, in fact quite the opposite, feel it’s the most reliable one done on these cars yet. What I was suggesting is that if you were to put the car in 2 wheel drive mode, is it possible the car could output higher than 340? However as you have explained, the Dyno calculates Drivetrain losses, therefore the answer is no 👍🏼
Exactly that!
How much did it make at the wheels not crank?
I don't have this information to hand as in Europe we always talk about crank figures
All
Good thank u
So it's basically stage 1 tuned ?
Not really, a MK7 Golf R pre-GPF could make around 360-380hp on Stage 1 (with DSG software) and a GPF car can make around 350-360hp.
So kinda inbetween a stock MK7 Golf R & a tuned MK7.5R with GPF
So with stage 1 hopefully it reaches 400+ horses, around 410-420 hp maximum
Potentially! Let's see what happens once the ECU can be tuned (it's currently locked)
Does this motor have both port and direct injection? Wonder if that will carry over to North America???
@@RegalAutosport currently theres a tuning box like dtuk that increases it to 381bhp . Damn
@@upbeatmantis86 Certainly interesting!!
Are there any hardware differences between the two?
Which two?
@@RegalAutosport mk8 and mk7.5
Both were stock! 7.5R was before we tuned it
@@RegalAutosport I'm not being clear, let me start again.
Are there any hardware differences between the stock Mk8, and stock mk7.5 engines that would accont for the extra power and torque of the Mk*?
@@JakobusVdL Yes there are, we will cover this in a future video
Should you be revving it out at when it is so new and tight?
Why’d you say that?
It's fine it's a modern car, will only get better with a few more miles on it
@@markrs59 even modern engines still need running in for a least 500miles, I worked for a vw dealership.

Which one?
@@RegalAutosport think he meant this one czcams.com/video/OIl57b3eFoo/video.html
Thanks! That’s a non-GPF model. The MK7.5R comparison in this video is a GPF car, which is more relevant to this MK8R comparison.
(MK7.5R came in GPF and on-GPF variants and the measured figures before and after tuning are very different)
My old 2015 mk7r with just a cat back back system on made 313hp 300ftlb just for another comparison
@@RegalAutosport yes I have non GPf 310 car. The 8 you ran shows 20hp uplift over claimed. The 7.5 showed 18hp over claimed. Whether it gpf or not, it’s the delta over OEM claimed that caught my attention. Just observation.
No run in period on a golf R then?
Nothing that we can see in the manual supplied with the car 🤷🏻♂️

Cool that it's faster, but 7.5 looks way better
haha! It is growing on us, you know...
How annoying is the countdown clock
320 ft-lb = 434 NM

All the car companies lied about fuel economy and co2 emissions.
Now they're all lying about hp figures.
Being a car guy, I'm happy with the second lie!
There is a rumour that manufacturers also rate their cars with lower octane fuel, like 95 for example and we are running 99. So perhaps that goes into the mix... No idea if that rumour is true though.
So mk8 golf r is 340bhp not even run in!!! Lol. It will probably be higher when run in. Very interesting 👍
Yup!! We’ll be dynoing it more over time, so stay tuned to see what it makes

I’m just going a bit careful for the first few hundred miles though 😎

Don't even consider tuning boxes, they are utter wank
They sure are! Driveability is terrible and the ECU never knowing how the engine is operating is far less than ideal however, if you want to increase output and can accept these drawbacks then a tuning box may be the way to go.
Whilst the ECU is locked, this is what we'll most likely be using.
@@RegalAutosport tbh, I wouldn't even run a tuning box if the ecu is locked, I would wait until you can crack and unlock the ecu. Dread to think the damage these tuning boxes are potentially doing
