On the drone, it should be noted that even if your locality doesn't have laws against it (like that person from Cali) there may be other reasons someone wouldn't be allowed to use it. Some trails have regulations against drones. Also some other hikers look down on them. So make sure you look into any places you know they go to and check their rules.
Just a FYI about the Garmin® Mini. Yes, they are pretty expensive to buy brand new. Even my local Cabela's/Bass Pro Shop store sells them for a ridiculous price. When they are supposedly on sale and they tell you that you can save a whole whopping 10% off the regular price. Anyway, what I am getting at is. That I was able to buy not only a Garmin® Mini. But also a Garmin® Rino® from my local Craigslist. And both of them had never been used before and were still in the original boxes. Bought the Garmin® Mini for $100 dollars and the Rino® for $220 dollars. Though both of the people who sold them to me wanted there original asking price. I was able to negotiate them down on the price. Because no one else had tried to get in contact with them. And they really just wanted to get rid of them and make a few bucks.
I thought for a second he was gonna whip out a whole sleep system “Get them a Thermarest X-Therm Sleeping Pad and a bag of chips. Because they both sound the same when you use them.” 😂😂😂
Hogue mini-RSK is similar, but significantly better than the Benchmade griptilian. Best bang for the buck. If you want something a little cheaper, Ferrum Forge Stinger. Even cheaper? Go for the Damned Designs Djinn XL. Those are some of the best value options with really good steels for their price category.
Dynema its self isnt waterproof dynema is used to make climbing kit and it has to be treated to shed water, the dynema provides the strength its the composit contruction of the fabrig that will make it water resistant
I've already sent off my list, but I have on it: A Ka-Bar Another pair of Salomons Wild Zora meals/snacks A Buff More darntough socks. A solar-powered portable charger Hiking pants *I may need to pick up that Garmin Inreach for my husband.
Wow, first two items in your video are the two biggest items on my wishlist hahaha Won't be getting those for Christmas though. Eventually I'd want to go for the InReach mini as well. Thanks for the video!
As always a great video. Got to check out the headlamp because it's the first I have seen that takes into consideration others. Also I find they don't work well with a billed hat. I usually clip a flashlight to the bill Soni can see the ground. That does blind others at night. Thanks for introducing this one to me.
Great video! I like that everything you picked is either an upgrade or something different than what most backpackers might already have. It's nice it wasn't all from your normal gear list too--not that that list isn't great! Oh, and I enjoyed the epic sound effects on the mavic demo. Almost sold me on a drone right there!
Just (finally) bought a Soto Windmaster the other day at Backcountry Gear. They had it on sale for $48 (Tri-flex was also on sale for $7). I'd never checked out Hilltop before...thanks, Danno!
I’d rather get the Mavic Mini. It’s under 250 grams, meaning...you don’t need to register with the FAA, so long as you’re not using it for commercial use. UNDERSTAND, the Appellation Trail is a NO FLY ZONE for drones. The available app to help with restricted air space is B4UFLY. Just some thoughts on drones.
thanks man! I thought I would try to do something a bit different. I figure there’s people that want to buy something other than cheap stuff for someone!
I patented that headlamp neck hang last month bro! ;-) lol... In all seriousness, I have the Nitecore NU25 which is awesome too and it hangs great from the neck as well.
Recently been looking at drones and trying to decide between the mavic air and mini. Significant price difference, but appears the minimum lacks obstacle avoidance and follow functionality. Thanks for the ideas. Maybe I should share the video with my wife.
Dan... great gift ideas.... you don’t need to send them to me if you choose not to.... I will just use the ones you sent to Jeremiah Stringer and Backing With Jason. Enjoy the holidays.
Dan, do you have a favorite hiking shoe/boot that you usually wear? i know its up to personal preferences, but was wondering if you have a recommendation for new boots... Cheers! and Happy Holidays...
Just a heads up, your list in the comments has the bindi twice and doesn't list the Soto. This was a great video to decide what to by for myself though 😁
Hey Dan I know you're cutting back on your comments and I know your wife appreciates it. One question for you sir I just bought a brand new down top quilt what's the best way to store it
Great ideas thanks ! I just did some test with the RavPower it has impressive performance (very efficient when it comes to redeliver the 10 000 mAh almost 96%) way better than Anker ones. Adrien
@@DanBecker I did a video on that =) You can check the last video of my channel. I'm french but I've had english subtitles, I would love to have your feedback =) Thanks Adrien
Great video as always. I have ed 3 of those items in my shopping list. Don't forget that not all backpacker enthusiasts are males. In your excitement you said "he", which I totally understand but my husband would be "WTF, did you get me something called a Bindi or a Soto?" And I would be nvrm just give them to me 😆
My one Christmas wish would be a mongoose Envoy cargo bike but sadly I can't buy it for myself cuz once again life kicked me in the balls and I lost my job so I'm going back in survival mode and shortly probably going to find another job soon out on the streets
Dan I forgot which video you talked about a headlamp that's waterproof, rechargeable, and the power button can't be turned on if it gets squashed in your pack in. please help
There’s a few headlamps that do that. Black diamond revolt. Or the Nitecore NU25. The Nitecore is water resistant not waterproof. But it still works even in rain.
thanks Dan. the main selling feature for me is not being able to get switched on in my backpack. it's tough to find a headlamp with every feature I want. like going straight to red light without turning on the white light. waterproof, rechargeable, ultralight, min 200 lumens, green or camo. sorry had to share my headlamp requisites. thanks for getting back to me Dan. I'll probably go with the black diamond if I don't find the one with the power button covered.
Me too (14”) and when I checked the HMG were, like most packs, men’s torso sized- wider shoulder straps and longer torso. I even tried a ZPacks on (at PCT Days) and they told me I’d be looking at a Scout but they didn’t have any with them. No Dynema for me yet.
Holy moly you are right! I need to add that on there LOL! Thanks a ton! Yes I have had issues with it flickering in video. Lots of headlamps do that. Particularly Petzl and black diamond. Something to do with how it operates with the shutter speed on a camera. I also have the Nitecore NU25 and that does not affect shutter speed at all.
@@DanBecker I had bigtime problems with the MSR reactor at about 38 degrees. MSR pocket rocket was a bit better in the cold. The reactor I actually had to take the pot off and shake up the fuel canister to get it going again. Any suggestions on a cold weather stove??? Do a video on cold weather stoves!!!! I need help!
You made this video little bit too late! My wife just told me she has all my Christmas shopping done. But I showed her this video anyways. Just in case! 😅
Hyperlite, and I hate to say this because its a business in my home state, looks and works like an old-school duffel bag. No ergonomics whatsoever, no consideration for weight distribution... the design is amateurish. For over $300.00 it should have more than a 1 year warranty; because everyone wears an Osprey that is guaranteed for life. Business model suicide. Pretty dangerous fidget spinner Dan. Butterfly knives are much more entertaining. The most important information about the knife is blade steel... if you are like me and work with knives daily cutting poultry. Benchmade makes some with S30V, which is what my two go-to processing blades are made from. I'll look that one up, but folders are for folks who aren't dipping them in gore regularly.
If you are a hiker or backpacker, please leave your drone at home. Nothing, except maybe a boom box, is as annoying as going to the woods and having that hideous intrusive noise ruining your trip.
IMO as it should be....nobody except the drone owner wants to hear that annoying buzzing in the backcountry. Leave the noise behind, embrace what quiet you can find.
Dan....I'm exhausted watching you move your mouth. How in creation did you do this video without water. Oh, I'm throwing some serious HINTS fer the garmin inreach mini to the wifey. Ugh..I forwarded your vid to her and she replied, I don't need anything for backpacking..I do ironmans...I can't use this stuff. Ugh, lemme know when you have a spare garbage bag, so I can backpacking in that. Painful....so painful. Drink some water man and stop talking too fast. 😉
Stocking stuffer ideas for hikers:
1. Their preferred sock brand (Smartwool, Wigwam, DarnTough etc)
2. A Buff
3. Polarized sunglasses
4. Repair/seam sealing kit
Injinji Liner Crew Toesocks
This is the first year I have ever ASKED for socks. Lol
My Benchmade never leaves my side. I absolutely love that knife. It’s not the griptillian, but it’s similarly compact.
Iv just got the mavic mini I highly recommend for the price it can't be beat and it wieghs next to nothing 👍great vid as usual

I thought for a second he was gonna whip out a whole sleep system

😂😂😂
I thought the same thing, put everything in the ditty bag. 😎
All great gifts!
really good call on the knife, my gf low key watched this and it's honestly one of my favorite gifts ever
Regarding the drones, in case you are not aware, not all public parks/lands allow them.
Hogue mini-RSK is similar, but significantly better than the Benchmade griptilian. Best bang for the buck. If you want something a little cheaper, Ferrum Forge Stinger. Even cheaper? I’d recommend a gift certificate because most back packers a) already have a ton of gear b) have very specific brands they use and products they need
