I would say that there are as many, if not more classics in modern Hip Hop compared to the late 90s to early 2000s era of Hip Hop due to the sheer number of releases happening nowadays. The late 90s had a better batting average because there were less official releases from rappers, but the 2020s era gets too much disrespect. I will say that the mainstream of the late 90s was much better than today's mainstream, but the underground of the 2020s can go toe to toe with 90s underground Hip Hop

    • @goh02

Personally I would probably have him too 10 but I don’t have him top 3. I have K Dot, Future, Drake. If Future or Drake drop another mid album I would say Cole would be over them but based on creativity and album quality what Drake and Future did early 2010s was crazy. Also I might put Travis right around the same level as Cole because he’s more creative but Cole has been at it longer and he is the better rapper by far. Also I feel like some other rappers might get overlook in this conversation like Rocky, Chief Keef, Joey Badass, or Tyler. I personally would probably say pretty much all those guys have an album better than Cole’s best album but one could argue Cole’s consistency and features are what put him ahead which is a valid argument but we’re not arguing Gunna as top 10 based on features. Not trying to hate on Cole I’m a fan but I just think that if we look back 10 years from now albums like NWTS, Monster, TPAB, Finally Rich, or Flower Boy will be more memorable and have influenced the culture than anything Cole has done. Also these albums are all just amazing albums and as good of an artist as Cole is I would say he only has 3 really good albums unless we start talking his mixtapes

Here’s mine: the roots are the greatest hip hop group of all time, even better than wu tang. They have one of the greatest discographies of any rapper or group ever, with classics, one of the greatest rap albums ever with things fall apart, and no bad albums, which is rare from a rapper or group with over 9 albums. Black thought is arguably the most talented rapper of all time, with the greatest bars, flows, etc ever. They made 2 amazing boom bap albums, and when that wave started to die out, they changed their sound, and transitioned to more jazz rap style, and were even better, while all the big boom bap rappers of the 90s were making bad albums. Black thought still has it, and still makes amazing music, and has amazing features. Wu tang are obviously amazing, but they only have a few great albums, and most of their best stuff comes from the members’ solo work.

I just can't fathom the hate and disrespect J. Cole gets all the time. There are literally no reasons for it. All dude is rapping about in his projects revolves around the struggle of the black people and his projects always remained true to real hip hop elements. He is a real one. Imo, J. Cole is just as good as Kendrick as an emcee. Whether we're talking skillset, bars, rhymes, flows, diversity, and storytelling, they're just as good. I do understand that J. Cole's writing is simpler, but that doesn't make it any less good than Kendrick's imo. What gives Kendrick a slightly upper hand imo is his discography. Gkmc and Tpab may easily be the best two hip hop albums in the past 10 years. J. Cole has A LOT of great projects but imo he still needs to drop atleast one album that can match k dot's gkmc and tpab. But overall, I place them at the same level at emceeing. And let's not forget how J. Cole has balanced the competition between him and K dot in two ways. First being an executive and for what he did with Dreamville and how he brought some names to the game like Jid Bas Cozz Earthgang and Ari. Second his producing skills. Behind them is Drake as both an emcee and an artist with well crafted, conceptual, and meaningful projects. Drake has the upper hand if we're talking hits, numbers, popularity, and commercial success. A simple disclaimer: If Dot and Cole decided to go towards the hit making route they would've gotten Drake's numbers but they just stayed true to themselves. So to sum this up
    As an emcee:
1- Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole tied (K dot has a slightly upper hand if you consider complexity an extra point)
    3- Drake
    As an artist:
1- Kendrick (best discography among the three)
    2- J. Cole
    3- Drake
Hits, popularity, numbers and commercial success:
    1- Drake
    2- Kendrick Lamar
    3- J. Cole
    Personal preference:
1- J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar tied
    3- Drake
Final note to all those hating cornballs, stop hating on artists for clout and followers, whether it's Kendrick Cole Drake or any other artist. Also try to compare less and enjoy more because comparison is the thief of joy.

Cole got boring for me when I realized that the issues he talks about are much more nuanced than what he's able to explore. Just mentioning important topics does not make you deep or smart. He's a surface level conscious rapper with bad/mediocre all throughout his discog and a disappointing incapacity to execute good concept albums. He's a talented emcee, but he falls short as a complete artist.

    • @Abibiabobo
      @Abibiabobo Před 2 lety

@PTYTen it's how you choose to describe him. Even Cole himself said multiple times he wouldn't call himself "smart" yet people like to believe he thinks he's that guy. To me he's just thoughtful and authentic, just like Kendrick. They stayed true to themselves and never sacrificed their artistic integrity to make hit records. That's how I choose to describe them, not just "conscious" and "smart". Also 4yeo and kod are great concept albums, I would argue they're his best albums to date, wym he's weak with concept albums.
