If you could ask the Norns one question, what would it be? 👀
I’m honestly not quite sure what I would ask 😂
Please do characters from hazbin hotel and helluva boss on messed up origins
Id ask them to stop speaking like they are literally reading the script. Its annoying.
If I will ever be able to get a house for my kids and grandkids to have after my passing.... Ooh kinda sad
One question.......
If your mother was a five dollar bill, and your father was an unpeeled orange, how many pancakes would be required to cover a Volkswagen?
I do love me a good smiting.🎉
There's an episode in the Disney Hercules cartoon where he goes to...the Norse mythology place... and the Norns are there. And he says, "Hey, you're just the Fates, you're working two mythologies." "What? No we're not, we're the Norns, we're completely different." Then at one point they go, "Come on sister Fates..I mean, Norns."
Brilliant 😂
What it actually is. Is that the spiritual realm leaks into humans minds across the planet. But every culture views it in a different way. Like a distorted photo or mirror
@@confusciouspuff5701that's why we all have our own versions but it's all the same
@confusciouspuff5701 that's why I'm one of those that's willing to believe different gods and goddesses could possibly all be coexisting with each other/the same beings in at least some cases. Even God in the Bible acknowledges that there are Egyptian gods that he wants to make people stop worshiping, so that theory even works with Christianity (from my understanding at least)
😂
The quote "I'm/you are/the master of your/my own fate." Suddenly makes so much sense.
When I started getting into Norse mythology I really liked the incidental theme of Odin (seemingly) trying to prevent Ragnarok and doing everything he needed to make it happen as a result. It's like he was wise enough to know he couldn't change his fate, but couldn't help trying, or he did it all on purpose to cause the greatest war ever.
Wake up sleeping one, Jon Solo posted a new norse mythology video
Sleeping one: I AWAKEN
YES! I have AWAKENED!
YES! I have AWAKENED!
YES! THE SLEEPING ONE HAS AWAKEN!
As was foretold.
See you in paradise
That ending talk about making new choices was so real 💯 I loved it, thank you for that ❤
Hell yeah! So glad you got something out of it :)
There's an anime called Ah! My Goddess(aa! Megamisama) that has an interesting spin on the Norse fates. There's Urd(Urthr), Belldandy(Verthandi) and Skuld. They're all sisters with Urd being the most traditional and Skuld being fascinated by tech.
I’ve seen that anime and I’ve read the manga!
I do enjoy how Japanese writers reinterpret western mythology. I'm so old I rented the 6 VHS tapes of the Oh! My Goddess! OVA also somewhere I have a single issue of the series I picked up at the Comic Book Shop. Of course back then I couldn't pronounce Yggdrasil and reliable translations of manga were harder to find. Not like today where the kids have it easy and can find fan translations of their obscure titles and waifu pillows...
Teacher here - every day i tell some of my kids to make better choices. None of them do. But i can get behind the, "today we will be better," quote completely. Corny as it may be... Its still true.
Really makes knowing the Norns, or Fate, a lot better than we give them credit for.
I am so happy jon uploaded me need more mythology vids
good advice drop at the end i needed to hear that jon thank you
In your research Jon, did you encounter the manga: Oh my Goddess? That one features the three Norns
"The Norns choose exactly when you're going to die, how you're going to die, and all the major decisions you'll make that will lead to your death." This is essentially how I write my stories. Characters, world, major plot points, then let the characters take over for all the in-between stuff. I am the Norn of my own stories. o(*°▽°*)d
I love that perspective!
Awesome video. Can you do one about the origins (and inspiration behind) the Frankenstein monster?
There’s a particular anime I like called Ah my goddess where one of the Norns falls in love with a human in Japan, then her two sisters come down from heaven and live with them. (The only thing that’s different is that the Norn of the Present is named Belldandy instead of Verdandi. Also, the Norn of the Future, Skuld, is a young inventor/engineer who hates her older sister being with this human. She also loves ice cream and can’t really do magic very well. And the Norn of the past, Urd, is a very voluptuous and seductive maker of potions and wants her sister and the human named Keiichi Morisato to, well, do it with each other. Or for Urd herself to do Keiichi, whichever happens first… also, Urd is Half-demon and her mom is the queen of the demon realm, plus I think it’s implied that the father of all 3 Norns is God himself!)
I learned about the Norns from this show too 👍
I like that -- "Belldandy"! That's a pretty name. I wonder if it's due to dialect -- V and B are closely related sounds, as are L and R. Maybe it was an accidental interpretation that just ended up being pretty cool?
@@CatDemon345 that’s neat! Cool that you like the show too. (And Gargoyles had the 3 Norns in it too. Although in that show, they might’ve been known as the Wyrds. They changed shape a lot too.)
@@TitularHeroine did you ever watch the anime?
@@jacobshore5115 I remember them, the Wyrd sisters that showed up to manipulate Demona and Macbeth.
I really enjoyed this story thank you. For taking the time to tell the story
12:10 i thought the same. That was so unnecessary. I was like wtf 😂.
P.S. you have me watching all the gameplays. That’s how I even know what you’re talking about. Great content. It’s extremely refreshing. Even w your takes on popular children’s stories. All those artists using their story telling gifts to teach children and even adults. It’s admirable. Thanks. And your ending wasn’t corny lol. Well a little lol. But appreciated
Loved the video! especially the part about choices
The most common theme in all mythologies is the self fulfilling prophecy, trying to control your own fate only leads to you being exactly where fate planned you
You are amazing jon truly a great person thank you for all the wisdom and entertainment you bring us and especially thank you for those life tips and advice you throw into the videos they help some of us more then you could ever know brother. God bless you and have an amazing day❤❤❤
I have a suggestion next week. Can you do a video on Damballa
Too many cooks!
It takes a lot to make a stew
A pinch of salt and laughter too
Too many cooks can spoil the broth
But they'll fill our hearts with so much, so much love
Too many cooks means more food!
There seems to be this link between the number 3 & goddesses/witches. The Greek Fates, The Norns (even tho as you mentioned there are more than 3) The Wyrd Sisters, the 3 witches in MacBeth or The Weird Sisters, the 3 Graeae witches that Perseus steals an eye from & the 3 gorgon sisters. Triple aspect goddesses are common too (maiden, mother, crone) The Morrigan & Hecate supposedly are triple aspect goddesses. I think beecause only 3 Norns were explicitly named they have become conflated with the 3 Fates of Greek myth. It's even possible the Valkries were a type of Norn.
The rule of 3! It stems from oral storytelling but its a technique in writing/storytelling where you group things into a three or 'the triad' (3 little pigs, 3 fates etc) apparently our brains understand/memorize concepts and ideas better when grouped into a 3. I remember learning about this in English class and once it had been pointed out I couldn't stop seeing it everywhere, its used especially in marketing (only having 3 words in a slogan and such) sorry if I went on abit I just find writing techniques really interesting.
This was beautifully said
Thanks Jon 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I was just looking for a video about norns yesterday. There weren't a lot on CZcams and you suddenly posted it. The Norns are at work.
My first introduction to the norms was through the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. It was during the KC Grand Championships that a duelist (name: Zigfried von Schroeder) had them as continuous spells and they work similarly to the legends.
Skuld (Card name: Goddess Skuld's Oracle): Let's you look at the top 3 cards of your opponent's Deck and return them to the top of the Deck in any order.
Verdandi (Card name: Goddess Verdande's Guidance): Let's you declare 1 type of card (Monster, Spell, or Trap); reveal the top card of your opponent's Deck and if it was the declared type, they Set it to their field.
Urd (Card name: Goddess Urd's Verdict): Let's you declare 1 card name, then target 1 Set card your opponent controls; reveal the Set card, and if it was the declared card, banish it.
No I'm going to definitely be honest with you Jon solo your videos are Norse mythology are truly amazing I'm hoping that you continue to do more Norse mythology videos and stuff
Can you review The Black Cauldron?!?! Love your videos 😻
There is a manga and anime called Ah or Oh My Goddess and there are 3 sisters named Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld. However, they are not Norns, but goddesses whose father is Odin, and all of them have different mothers, but they do have a thing in common with the Norns, they are in order, present, past and future.
Deym nostalgic
_Open your mind..._ 🎵
I'm a little disappointed you didn't give a shout out to one of the most recent adaptations of the three, the incarnations in Kosuke Fujishima's manga "Oh, My Goddess"("Ah, Megami-Sama" in Japan). And it actually eventually gives a shout out of sorts to their mythological counterparts' connection to time when the source of their divine power is temporarily cut off and Urd, the physically and chronologically eldest, suddenly turns into a child and Skuld, the youngest physically and chronologically, suddenly turns in an adult while Belldandy has to turn herself doll-sized to prevent herself constantly passing out. It also gave Urd an interesting extra touch by revealing while her father was the "Almighty", her mother was in fact Hild, the Queen of the Demons!
Sorry about that! I surprisingly didn't encounter it in my research (probably because I focused so much on the God of War interpretation). That's my fault.
i haven't actually played any _God of War_ game (i didn't have the consoles for it when the older ones were new and don't really want to play the new ones without having played those :P) but i HAVE long had some familiarity with the Norns through a different work of fiction: _Oh My Goddess!,_ a romcom manga and one of my personal favorites. that one's more about them being named after the Norns (technically in the female lead's case, since translating "Verdandi" into Japanese and then into English ultimately has it come out to "Belldandy" instead) and adapting some elements of other myths into their own thing for the story.
come to think of it, that makes it a bit like what Marvel Comics did with the myths.
Let’s go more Norse mythology stuff as a Norse pagan thank you.
The norns were the basis of the three goddess sisters in Ah! My Goddess! The happened/happening/will happen angle was amusingly used for a couple of episodes about puberty.
I imagine them riding off into battle and her just pointing randomly, “He’s gunna die. Stabbed.” “Alright. Next is that one over there. He’s gunna be shot to death with arrows.” 😂
Many people from Mark Twain to Tom Clancy have made some variation on the statement “a story has to make sense, reality does not”. While most Norse mythology and things derived from it have this theme of “fate is inescapable”, I have anyway thought that this is the real source of most of their suffering. They try to make their lives work like a story, but there are always things you don’t foresee or can control. The 2nd Science of Discworld book explores this is great depth about the power of stories and how we use them to understand the world, and how it doesn’t always work.
The threefold goddess is very much throughout Indo-European mythology. Read The White Goddess. I read it in my early twenties and very much enjoyed it,
Kind of reminds me of lyric from one song. It goes something like even if you choose not to choose you still have made a choice
I liked the cookie analogy. Nice choice
10:03
I totally read that as CHOKES
I know that these origins probably aren't very messed up, but could you do a video on the (messed up) origins of the great mouse detective by Disney? the movie is great, but not a lot of people talk about the original basil of Baker Street books the movie is based on
There was an anime called Ah! megami-sama (oh! My goddess!) about three goddesses called urd, skuld and belldandy (verdandi), where a guy calls a helpline and belldandy appears through his phone into his apartment, and he gets one wish, so he wishes for her to be his girlfriend. Sounds creepy, but hes a sweet guy and basically treats her like the goddess she is. It was a cute series.
There's an anime/manga called "Oh my Goddess!/Ah, my Goddess!" Which features these three girls as goddesses and sisters who ended up rooming with this one guy. The youngest is a kid and so forward looking that she makes inventions all the time, while the eldest is reckless and does whatever she wants. Only the middle girl is kind and even shows care to machinery too.
In a mini arc when the divine system is down, the eldest turned into a child while the youngest turned into an adult. The middle one was unaffected though.
The Norns appear at the Begining of Götterdämmerung, the fourth and final part of Wagner's Ring Cycle.
Can we get an origin video on the VERY first flood myth in human history?
ya know it's wild tome now that the 3 main characters from Oh My Goddess are named after the Norns. i had no idea when i first read the series back in 2009. well, one is belldandy instead of verdandi but i think that might have just been a translation thing
hahahaha I was so confused when the word choices appear because to me it looked like" chokes" with that font 🤣
Wise words, shaman Jon😊
This is a great video but do you think you'd branch into other, obscure mythologies at some point?
I don’t know if you ever had the chance to look into it, but in years past, I have mentioned that there are some families that claim to have information predating the Eddas. I can’t vouch for the accuracy, but they claim to follow a religion that is more genuinely pagan than the neo pagans that we have currently.
Jon Solo: Born October 23rd. Will die with a smile on his face, at the ripe age of 99!
It is important to note, that Odin visited the well of Urd and hung himself, specifically to learn the runes which are used to control fate, destiney and the universe.
shit's wild
Interesting times ( and Place) indeed
The shit, Sir, has grown wild for certain
Hey Jon can you do a review or comparison video about the new Netflix anime called Grimm Variations and how they might be similar or different to the original fairy tales they are from?
Personally I'm always interested in how different cultures tend to have overlapping stories. Not only are these fates similar to Greek counterparts. They mirror the Celtic goddess trifecta The Morrigan, who is three stages of life all at once indicated by: the maiden(youth, virgin) mother(mid-life), croan (old woman or witch) they come together as one body too but that is unique to her mythology.
Hi Jon, can you do a episode of pirates( and yes it relates to Pirates of the Caribbean 😅)
Love the hel shirt Jon.
What about the origins of the poem that goes (roses are red, violet is blue?) Can you do a video on this?
Good to see bryan kohberger beat his charges and is making videos.
I love your videos! Because i love to learn. Can you please do Mesopotamian Gods? 👀
If Skuld means "what ought to happen" and she rides with the Valkyries, then what's going on is that they're saying "This G ought to d¡3." They'd've gotten us all, too, but -- Jon shot first. ;)
Stay safe 'k and I hope you're doing well. We love ya.
Oh yeah and are you going to put up any more polls? Those are fun.
Edit: misspelling & clarity
Have you done one on Hindu mythology, specifically Hanuman? That dude has some hilarious stories.
I have a question. If you were going to return to any of your first old videos which would do first?
Who knew this would be a therapy session at the end of
Mann job solo could have been motivation speaker
they had one of the best scenes in GOW Ragnarok also from then you were left in suspense wether it would be Kratos or Atreus who would die when it wasn't either.
Makes me think of a triple deity. Does he have a video on that?
These were the first fates I knew thanks to “Ah my Goddess”
You know what's scary? When you made that comment about "eating cookies to make yourself feel better about a fat stomach", I was in the middle of eating a cookie while worrying about being too overweight. That spooked me so much, I actually had to play back that part to make sure I wasn't hearing things, and then I threw the cookie away. No lie.
That's insane! Proud of you for making that choice man. Keep making similar choices that are good for you and you'll see how quickly things start to change for the better!
Just commenting for the algorithm 💜
11:08 while is a good message- that breaks and corrupts the established mythology. The norns established predetermined fates . We can cope and seethe as much as we like - but that it’s how it work within the context of mythology. Humans projecting their fears of been controlled by a higher force is so niched by this point . We get it. People are bad by their own choice, but in the world of mythos that is not how it works. Id the norns say “Thor is going to shit his pants at the age of 20 and punch Loki in the face because of it “ IT WILL HAPPEN and was not a matter of choice .
Norns vs Fates, who'd win?
In terms of power levels, the Fates from Greek mythology would definitely win because of how large Greek Myth is in terms of scale.
You mean like in a fight?
i am on the verge of acquiring everything i was owed and when i do it'll be because i did it not because it was Supposed to happen - loki
😅Wooo This got so deep way deep. 🤔 Yeah, I guess maybe it's a good point. 😎👍✨ Very insightful true poetry🎉 It will be a little richer for🎉
And chose cancer that's killing me.
I don't know, Jon... one doesn't have to be a charlatan to predict the future if it's vague enough. For example: I predict that we all die at some point, and there's no coming back for the sequel. 😀
Please can you do The Messed Up origins of Maya the bee please? (If you want to)
What do you call a rule being discussed in Norse council?
The principle of the Thing.
Messed up origins of Sun Wukong
No wonder every so often someone’s life took a turn and they became a fish or something. Those poor Norns are incredibly over worked.
By Odinson, your translations are good. You must now drink the mead. Ha.
duck killers feed ducks bread (bread kills ducks by filling their stomachs with stuff that doesn't give the nutrients they need)
can we please have a messed up irigins of the boy who cried wolf?
First like and comment! 1st time on here yay me lmao🎉😊
personally i thing to many people have been insulated from poor choices. all those kids whos parents never told them no and such
3:45 you mean to tell us that the norms were right below us in the game the whole time 😑
So long brother
Sorry dude but i couldn’t keep up with the CZcams and the Podcast. I tried for a while but couldn’t hang, sorry. May the Algorithm be in you Favor! Lol😅
What if Toy Story has a Dark Messed up origin?
What would happen if the Greek Fates met the Norns?
I get you homie. Everyone wants a scapegoat from their own shitty choices
❤❤❤❤❤
👍
how am i supposed to get out of a s---hole i didnt out myself in
Aren’t there also Norn Stones? How do those play into Norse Mythology?
The Norn Stones, as far as I can tell, are something Marvel came up with. I couldn't find any reference to them in Norse Myth.
@@popculturecurious4535 Okay. I wasn’t sure if they were part of Norse Mythology or just something that Marvel came up with.

myths are best taken as mirrors of an immature human animal- trying to translate the logic of the cosmos so intimately from such a distance- into the emotional language were adept too. logic is not our default we are primarily emotional thinkers which is why our brain will just rend our self control at times- especially if mute your input from substances or put yourself in a spiral with ideology or faith. we are in control of most of our actions but since the discoveries of our history weve slowly gotten more used to understanding logical language and in some cases weve even internalized it. but since humanities maturity both in the macro and the micro have equal impact as they have parts to be a vessel for; we should feel no shame for too long- for we are empty jars slowly being filled with understanding- well never fill them all up- too many jars too many labels to add to them and to many competing to fill those jars with something impactful- life changing. if we feel a moment of shame for our actions- then your observation is the most useful- change your way- think outside the box get less loyal to jars you assumed you filled up with good information- alot of the time we cant tell glitter from gold- so forgive your slip up and replace the fools gold with the real deal. for if were all fools starting our journey- then remember the tools of the past for what they represent and not their literal method. i dont believe in myths and psychics but their use of symbols is still compelling and useful- even from clearly broken processes we can gleen value if we just focus on what were trying to be- just alil bit better. this is why i love reading and this is why children love playing- were emotional thinkers- dont abandon it for logic- marry it with each other- cause the lessons we learn fromt he east isnt some cosmic order is in play- its that opposites are arbitrary and emotional observations- in truth its all one whole and that same thing applies when logic filters away all the romance- were still the universes few but many eyes- just barely comprehending itself- through a desperate entropy that guarantees it will be ripped away. theres a beauty in that, not a despair. theres no intent or thought that produced existence. it merely and arrogantly is.
That comes up in Christianity too! Predeterminism vs free will. Is is God's fault Adam and Eve were banished? If He knew they were gonna fuck up, why put the tree there in the first place? Or do we have free will and He *doesn't* know?
I don't know about you guys but I've seen a couple swans and they're rarely pure White. They hardly ever keep to the cleaning and hygiene standards that are expected of them in real life😅
