I think the biggest problem of Spider-Man Lotus is its pretentiousness. Gavin didn't make this movie because he really loves Spider-Man and wanted to explore the character even further. He made this movie because he wanted to prove he could do better than Marvel or Sony. It's an amateur film but I'm sure he was CONVINCED this was an Oscar-worthy movie. There is no humility in Spider-Man Lotus' creative decisions. Everything feels made out of pretentiousness.
I think this film’s major problem is that he was too concerned with making it “comic book accurate” and he completely forgot that people make new creative decisions that stray from the comics for a reason. The new movies are not “garb” for doing that. The other major problem with this movie is the angst lmao. There’s so much of it. Like having an angsty film isn’t terrible, but it can’t be the whole movie lol
This movie has singlehandedly tainted the reputation of Spider-Man fan films, which sucks because a lot of other fan films are WAY better than Lotus despite being made on a fraction of its budget (or no budget at all.)

As an apologist for Andrew Garfield’s Spidey specifically in the “Amazing” duology, it’s wild how icy & empty the Gwen x Peter dynamic is in this movie compared especially to the endearing & sweet chemistry Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield had in those films which shined as some of the best parts of them.
Yeah it helps when the actors actually love each other. During those scenes with Gwen and Peter I was thinking the entire time "Are they on the verge of breaking up? They seem really unhappy together".
feel like there's not enough people talking about how good the interactions between peter and harry were. for harry being such an obviously shoe-horned in character, they really made his dynamic with peter interesting. at least in my eyes.
It’s not just the lighting, it’s also the fact that they haven’t color corrected bright enough. I keep having to check my phones brightness every time a shot of the film comes up.
I edit some of the scenes to brighten up but it’s not that good but it’s much better than this. Seriously I have my brightness down so I either forget I already brighten my phone or it doesn’t change anything.
For $100,000 I expect the scenes to have proper lighting. But my guy was too busy being racist, hiding a groomer and badmouthing the actresses of the film to give us good lighting.
Important thing to note, Harry’s actor was not accused of Grooming. The Green Goblin actor was (also made some comments about “taking off the gangsta belt” when confronted about the racist text Gavin and Warden made) But also, theres been unconfirmed rumors that Gavin deliberately had Sean drink actual alcohol to keep him drunk all the time while filming his scenes as Harry. It got so bad that after filming had wrapped, Sean deleted all social media and ceased contact with the crew, and refused to show up for the premiere when it happened (As far as I’m aware Sean is still recovering, doing better, but not completely out of the woods)
Hi Cooper I've been to film school too, one of the graded projects was all about lighting. It's kind of super important, I looked at what great lighting was and how they did it, and any subsequent projects were scrutinised by myself. A good filmmaker should consider every shot, the lighting, the blocking, the mise en scene It's hard, but it's the effort all great filmmakers will put in to their art.
So apparently, the Jon Watts message was faked, so he may not be *as* egoistical, but still pretty egoistical in thinking he had never before seen take on Spider Man. Those racist messages are also still real.
“I’m the shocker I shock people, what is this pro wrestling?” Was SIGNIFICANTLY better than what that Shocker encounter was. Then again it is like you said, acting ability. Keaton made that work
And isn't it weird that someone who so openly hates the Holland SM movies would take a page out of their notes and make Shocker into a joke (and not even a good one)?
This is such a stupidly small thing that annoys me about this movie, but I hate how Spider-Man’s voice sounds muffled through his mask. Like, he sounds like he’s eating it. I don’t know what the real Spider-Man movies do to make that not the case, but the director really should’ve taken notes.
Hey HUGE CLARIFICATION here 12:26 the guy who plays the ACTUAL Green Goblin is the groomer not the guy who plays Harry. 1:26 And Warden Wayne was referring to BLERD Vision a popular comic instagram account for Black nerds (which is what BLERD means) so he was calling a popular black creator the N-word
It was so funny because I remember the producer Younis, Gavin’s former best friend was accusing people on Twitter for being pedo’s yet his co-workers turn out to be one 😂😂😂
Here’s my pitch to Gavin: Hey, if you wanted to make the film about Peter feeling guilty about her death, then how about this: open the film with the action sequence, but make it not the focus, make his breathing, his physical/mental state the focus. Throughout, we get snippets of a previous fight, with civilian bystanders, where we can see Gwen getting hurt from rubble or some sort of accident. The memories throw him off a bit, but he still manages to win. And then he gets a voicemail from someone that tells him Gwen died in the hospital. We can see him collapse, wallow, maybe a montage? And then some dialogue with Aunt May or Harry to unpack and process his feelings. In that conversation, let him talk about how happy he was in the relationship. Later, put some flashbacks in the dream sequence so we can see that happiness before the whole “you killed me” thing. He wakes up, wallows again. The rest of the film is him going through life, grief is affecting him, action sequences and a climax I can’t think of right now in between, resolve the film with him overcoming his grief, moving forward even though he misses Gwen.
funnily enough from a purely comic book stand point Gwen's death didn't initially shake Peter as much, he was sad yes, but her death only strengthened his resolve as Spiderman, he already had somebody close to him pass because of his choices. I think it was only comic books after that went into the whole depression arc Peter had
It's bold to say we "learned" Gwen Stacy died in the scene after the title credits because I could not understand a damn word of that muffled voiceover and I only understood what happened from your recap
My favorite part was the dueling turtle-neck shirts, sported by Peter & Harry. Peter even goes one step further & adorns his turt (what we in the turtleneck game call turtlenecks), w a beige windbreaker. Nothin' but class.
GJK: "I can write better than then the MCU because I am a reeeaal Spider-Man fan."😎 *proceeds to have Joss Weadon, "He's right behind me, isn't he", "Well, that just happened" type dialog*
To be more fair to him than he deserves, that “Joss Whedon” dialogue you just described? That’s also known as “classic Spider-Man dialogue”. Peter Parker is one of the quippiest heroes out there to the point that people who interact with him immediately know something’s wrong/he’s being impersonated as soon as Spider-Man _stops_ quipping. Heroes tend to say punchy lines (and often literal punchlines) while punching bad guys (not just in Marvel either). It’s just really unfortunate that we got a bunch of movies about those types of heroes in a row (with the exception of the Thor movies because as much as I love his himbo characterization, he can keep that while still being played straight as someone who doesn’t make one-liners).
@@kaitlynmorgan4613 It’s something unavoidable with the character ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I seriously do agree with you that this is a perfect opportunity to make fun of this idiot, all that bragging and posturing just to make such a bad movie is hilarious. Absolutely do come at him with “ha you hypocrite”, but it would admittedly have more fangs if he’d made a movie about, say, The Hulk yet did the quippy humor. It was a very stupid thing for him to degrade MCU for its quippy humor knowing he was going to make a Spider-Man fan movie. It’d be like saying the MCU is shitty because it breaks the fourth wall too often _while prepping for a Deadpool fan movie._ So it seems like we understand each other, no worries.
The fact that the dude playing Spiderman acted dramatic and sad bc he knew something bad was going to happen. That pains me bc that is one very basic rule of acting is that even when you know what's going to happen you have to act like you don't know what is going to happen.
To be completely honest, I’m amazed they were even allowed to crowdfund a fan film of a Disney owned franchise, when all the other studios has seriously clamped down on that.
I think the worst part about this other than the racism and the fucked upness up the rest of the cast is that a lot of the suits looked good the person they chose for Gwen was good. Shockers suit and Spidey's suit was so slick and clean and the fact it was used for as bad of a movie as Spider-Man: Penis is generally heartbreaking.
the person they chose for gwen didn’t even try to act she just said her lines. i mean i don’t blame her for being disinterested, but they could’ve chosen someone who was willing to pretend to care lol
I mean they’re talking to friends who talk that way with them too. I’m not defending them but I’m just saying it’s weird their friends who also say the n word with them are the ones who betrayed them? It’s just weird
They share characteristics with a certain art student who got rejected from an art school for sucking at perspectives, and then went on to become racist premium.
I watched “secret to my success” starring Michael J. Fox and the way he was always jumping around I was like “he reminds me of someone…” then I realized that he totally should have played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in his youth.
"here you can see the racism. and the ego" what a surprise... a male online with a little bit of following who asked people for money to make a huge project he has no qualifications to make is way too into himself, and is actually a crappy human being behind the scenes... I feel like we've been there before
Oof. This is a real shame for everyone involved who wanted something really good. This needs MAJOR MAJOR help from so many aspects. There’s a reason movies and shows have so many departments. It’s to make things thoroughly thought out, to go through lots of different heads to check for issues. Huge issue with quality control.
I think the idea of Shocker wiggling his arms is supposed to be that his gauntlets are making him vibrate, but they couldn't actually do any good VFX to make it look like they were vibrating.....so they just fake it by having him look like he's pretending to have Parkinson's disease. Like you said earlier in the video, if they know they don't have the skills to do an effect, don't do it with a worse version of that effect.
Pro tip: if your movie's plot revolves around one of the main character's loved ones getting killed, keep the focus on that character instead of switching it to another one of their loved ones getting killed. It gets repetitive
This is so uncomfortable to watch! I've never heard of this fan film before, but holy shit. It is so bad. The writing, acting, directing, lighting, etc. It's all so bad. I feel so bad for the people that donated money for this to happen.
I disagree. To say that everything about this fan film is terrible is a disservice to the vfx team and the costume designers who worked hard to meet expectations. They had nothing to do with the controversy and did the best with what they had
@@acacia_alexanderThat I’d have to agree with. I’m sorry if I misunderstood your comment, I just get kind of upset when people hate on the vfx team and costume designers because they all seem like really nice people who didn’t know about Gavin and Warden’s actions and really tried their best
@@fegreninja7197 No worries. I agree. I wasn’t even taking the controversy into account, but from a filmmaking standpoint, the script and storyline is really weak. I’m sure they tried their best but the acting could have been better too. For what it’s worth a lot of the VFX were good and the costumes were good too.
So this movie is basically: *Peter being sad montage* *sad montage of happy memories about characters we dont care about* *Harry being sad montage* *Spider-man being sad montage* *Peter being sad montage again* *scenes with characters being sad only we cant see their faces or hear what they are saying montage*
32:30 Hey, you remember in Memento when the timelines converge and thats displayed to the audience by having the color fade in as Leonard shakes a developing photograph, naturally transitioning the two visual styles in an artistic way that isn't jarring to the viewer while also serving the narrative as a whole. The sad part is that there are so many good actors and directors who don't get the same traction. It's giving Netflix cancelling good shows and making more After movies.

Spider-Man is one of those characters that no matter how he’s portrayed people will have an opinion about him. So much to the point they get in their head that they think they could do better than the official studio. He’s so popular that people always think they have a fresh new take on him that’s uniquely theirs but because he’s been adapted and readapted a thousand times they rarely have anything original to say.

He said Jon Watts’ Spider-Man movies were bad, but Homecoming is SUCH a Spider-Man movie (if that makes sense). It captures his struggle near perfectly, as a teenager the way the actors act is spot on, the action was decent, it was faithful to Spider-Man as a character. And ACTUALLY gave him development over the course of the movie UNLIKE SPIDER-MAN LOTUS
Yeah but the problem with Homecoming is that the character development he got at the end of the movie gets immediately erased in the next film, only to regain it again later in the last movie. Another thing i don't like is how they wrote the side characters, Ned is basically a soulless gag character with zero development, Michelle gets no development as well, same thing with Flash, they could've done something more interesting with him, showing us him cyberbullying Peter everyday and being jealous of the fact that Liz likes Peter (because in the comics one of Flash's love interests is actually Liz Allan), maybe making him being regretful of his actions at the end after Liz made him realize that he was being too much of a douchebag after the Washington Monument events in order to become a better person and get actual character development in the next film or something, so many missed opportunities man.

And if he hadn't put himself that far out on a limb, people might've been more forgiving of the movie's flaws.
They say they take a new twist on spiderman but proceed to steal the comic’s moments where spiderman is with the sick kid…😭
My subtitles kept changing his name to Gavin J. Cannot which is so ironically funny.
The most unrealistic part of this movie is Peter owning a coffee maker and having a tidy organized living environment

@@Master_Chefhe's right lotus, it's the only way
I think this film’s major problem is that he was too concerned with making it “comic book accurate” and he completely forgot that people make new creative decisions that stray from the comics for a reason. The new movies are not “garb” for doing that. The other major problem with this movie is the angst lmao. There’s so much of it. Like having an angsty film isn’t terrible, but it can’t be the whole movie lol
Stan Lee if he was alive would absolutely murder Gavin. If not disgrace his entire career.
This movie has singlehandedly tainted the reputation of Spider-Man fan films, which sucks because a lot of other fan films are WAY better than Lotus despite being made on a fraction of its budget (or no budget at all.)
for so long, we didn’t really have any bad spider-man content. even asm2, even spider-man 3, they were both acceptable

I think Andrew and Emma carried those goddamn movies big time.
REAL!!! also hi fellow andrew spidey apologist
Yeah it helps when the actors actually love each other. During those scenes with Gwen and Peter I was thinking the entire time "Are they on the verge of breaking up? They seem really unhappy together".
Say what you want about those films but at least the character chemistry is good like you feel the relationship between them.
feel like there's not enough people talking about how good the interactions between peter and harry were. for harry being such an obviously shoe-horned in character, they really made his dynamic with peter interesting. at least in my eyes.
It’s like the director thinks he’s directing a GOT episode 😂
Don't give the guy ideas, who knows how he thinks a good GOT finale should look like?
For $100,000 I expect the scenes to have proper lighting.
But my guy was too busy being racist, hiding a groomer and badmouthing the actresses of the film to give us good lighting.
Important thing to note, Harry’s actor was not accused of Grooming. The Green Goblin actor was (also made some comments about “taking off the gangsta belt” when confronted about the racist text Gavin and Warden made)
But also, theres been unconfirmed rumors that Gavin deliberately had Sean drink actual alcohol to keep him drunk all the time while filming his scenes as Harry.

A good filmmaker should consider every shot, the lighting, the blocking, the mise en scene
It's hard, but it's the effort all great filmmakers will put in to their art.
So apparently, the Jon Watts message was faked, so he may not be *as* egoistical, but still pretty egoistical in thinking he had never before seen take on Spider Man. Those racist messages are also still real.

This is such a stupidly small thing that annoys me about this movie, but I hate how Spider-Man’s voice sounds muffled through his mask. Like, he sounds like he’s eating it. I don’t know what the real Spider-Man movies do to make that not the case, but the director really should’ve taken notes.
That’s the exact thought I had it sounds like it was recorded on a AirPod
Hey HUGE CLARIFICATION here 12:26 the guy who plays the ACTUAL Green Goblin is the groomer not the guy who plays Harry. 1:26 And Warden Wayne was referring to BLERD Vision a popular comic instagram account for Black nerds (which is what BLERD means) so he was calling a popular black creator the N-word
So he’s still racist
It was so funny because I remember the producer Younis, Gavin’s former best friend was accusing people on Twitter for being pedo’s yet his co-workers turn out to be one 😂😂😂
The Green Groomer.
Here’s my pitch to Gavin:
Hey, if you wanted to make the film about Peter feeling guilty about her death, then how about this: open the film with the action sequence, but make it not the focus, make his breathing, his physical/mental state the focus.
You should've been pitched as the writer instead.
You should have been the director instead
If you aren't a fanfic writer I don't know what else you could be.
Wouldn't fix the terrible lighting (and all the other problems with the film). But this is WAY better structured than that shit show.
funnily enough from a purely comic book stand point Gwen's death didn't initially shake Peter as much, he was sad yes, but her death only strengthened his resolve as Spiderman, he already had somebody close to him pass because of his choices.
GJK: "I can write better than then the MCU because I am a reeeaal Spider-Man fan."😎
*proceeds to have Joss Weadon, "He's right behind me, isn't he", "Well, that just happened" type dialog*
@@baydiac yes, but the point is the director is like "marvel humor sucks" and proceeds to use marvel humor

I seriously do agree with you that this is a perfect opportunity to make fun of this idiot, all that bragging and posturing just to make such a bad movie is hilarious.

SO REAL
