The most likely structures to be preserved in Europe are probably churches, castles and the birth house of some famous people.

Dude, that morning I went to my back yard to watch the Challenger launch, living in South Florida at the time. No launch, went back inside and turned on CNN and got ready for school. It took a half hour for the news to bother mentioning that the launch had been delayed so I went to school. I heard about it about an hour after it happened because teachers turned on what was supposed to be the first teacher in space teaching a lesson from space and found the news talking about what had happened.
I hear people say their teacher brought in a TV to watch the launch so they watched it live, however there was no ongoing coverage of the launch once it was delayed. TV went back to regular scheduled programming. That means they would have been playing daytime soaps for the students.
Maybe a few west coast kids got to school had teachers who found out when the launch had been rescheduled to before work started and so it could have happened there if there was a station willing to interrupt regular broadcast for a shuttle launch. No way this is a common experience though. It's like everyone who claims they saw Babe Ruth point to the bleachers.
The challenger explosion is literally the first memory I have of television. My mother and godmother had just gotten back from the store with me, they'd bought me a little inflatable space shuttle and we all parked on the couch and, uh... Woof
