Peter Freestone - Freddie and his privacy

  • I felt it was the right time to talk about Freddie and why he didn't tell the world about his private life back in the 70s and 80s. You can see on the news these days exactly what would have happened. Milan and I have also been sitting with our thinking caps on, to come up with something that quite a few people have asked about. Watch and find out more!

I remember how things were when Freddie was diagnosed. Society was closed minded and fearful. We have come a long way but not far enough. Honestly I get so tired of people associating Freddie with being gay. Who gives a shit? It was just a part of who he was and who we loved! He was an amazingly talented man and I know I will never see another like him in my lifetime. I still listen to Freddie and Queen non stop. They were/are a big part of my life and I'm so happy to see Freddie's legacy being kept alive and honored!!!

Never met Fred... I was 11 when he died and had just really started getting into the band when my mother told me over breakfast that 'the guy from the band you liked just died.' It was the first rock celebrity I lost and it's still the most impactful. I love him, love his music, his persona, etc. Man, singer, writer, legend! Miss you Freddie... and thank you for everything you gave me. Music meant nothing until I heard you.

Freddie had every right to his privacy. It was his life, and he, just like anyone else, no matter who they are, deserved that right to his privacy. It sounds like Freddie had the right idea on it. Like you mentioned how some of the Olympians were having their own sexuality told to the rest of the world, that is why I didn't watch it. I don't want to know about that. I don't need to know who they are sleeping with. That's their business. Their private lives.

Freddie’s heart was always in the right place. He protected the legacy of the mother ship and his band mates. Truly an incredible man. I often wonder if he knew how loved he really was/is? According to a dream I had with him some years ago, he knew it and was very thankful and happy/ in a bliss for that. It was similar to his expression on seeing Love of my life in Rock in Rio. But a bit more seasoned/ matured feeling. He was wearing that Wembley white jacket. He had a light on his head that prevented me from seeing his face clearly. I saw it when I asked and the eyes were his. It felt he knew he left a nice legacy but repented for going after fulfilling that inner affective lacking so vigorously instead of working on that feeling which ultimately resulted in his precocious passing. He said he could have taken easier. But overall he was okay and spiritually tried to give back as much as he could signing spiritual autographs and talking to people who he could reach/ gave permission and were feeling sad and needed direction in life, a shoulder to cry on as me at the time. He was kind of a counselor in heaven, and there’s still a lot of demand of attention to him but he said he manages it better nowadays. Or maybe that’s an illusion of mine but it’s the most realistic dream I ever had with him and wasn’t a fan yet. 🤷‍♂️🥰

I didn´t have time to tell you then, but I´m a writer and Freddie is in almost every book I wrote till now. My last one, ends with "anyway the wind blows". Freddie is part of my life, soul and gave me and still does give me tons of happiness each day. If I was the government, I declare all his treasures national patrimony. I want to tell you as well, that talking to you and knowing you is the closest I ever felt to Freddie, obviously, not taking into account his music. I´ve been really happy!! Thank you for your kind and friendly attitude towards me and for all the respect for him you´ve been having during decades. Ah! I have and read your book!!! Kisses from Argentina to you!!!

Hello Peter! Thank you for sharing these stories with us. I'm interested in hearing about you, too. So were you dating and who were your friends and did you discuss your relationships and share and compare and get advice and vice versa with Freddie? I'd like the whole picture of the day to day dynamics because it sounds like there were quiet moments, but for the most part a riot! A fun riot lol!

Thank you. Still watching this, part way through. I really value my privacy. Nowadays everyone knows what you had for breakfast or all the details of your holiday before you even arrive back home. There's something sacred about keeping parts of one's life private I think. Freddie did what he thought was best for himself and others. Brian and Roger continue to honour and protect his memory and legacy and I often think that they were/are like brothers. Anyway, thank you.

How lovely to see your new post, thank you Peter! As always, you speak from the heart about our beloved Freddie, and instill so much insight to what his life was really like. I, feel that he, along with so many others, were labeled gay or bisexual, how sad. What I will always remember is that this was a man, who deeply loved and was loved. His talent was amazing, but so was his heart. Queen is eternal because Freddie, along with Brian, John and Roger created fantastic music. I keep Freddie in my heart every time I hear a Queen song and feel the magic, such blessings! Stay well Peter and please keep writing, we need you.

It's great to see you on CZcams, a close friend of Freddie's and someone who truly loved him, talking about him and sharing different things. It's funny, I know he's been gone for so long, but seeing videos and photos of him, he always seems so youthful and alive. I'm so appreciative of what you're doing, helping keep Freddie's memory alive, especially for those of us who weren't here yet when he was alive. It's a special joy, a beautiful way to remember him and keep his memory alive. Thank you❤.

Hi Peter, Even before I got to know for real the band and Freddie I intuitively always truly understood and respected Freddie’s choice for keeping it private, because I have always been very reserved myself and now that is an open subject and way more accepted, which I partly credit to Freddie as a share of it, it’s still an stigmatized issue. By that time when I started enjoying their music I remember I was going through serious problems in the family, as depression and unemployment. I myself wasn’t dealing very well with those and started having mental problems. His music helped lift up my spirit in a very difficult time. I remember by that time I dreamed sth incredible with him, I was crying a lot in a show of theirs for my problems, he pointed at me came down from the stage and gave me a hug, I wetted his shirt and was concerned about it and he instantly changed it and said It was okay I could cry as much as I wanted… lol after talking he later gave me an autograph and telephone saying I could call any moment, I asked if I’d remember the number and he took a picture with me glued to my face, saying that was just to be sure it was him, other people around tried to get an autograph as well, some were mocking on him about his sexuality, a fog engulfing them as their expression of repentance was on their faces as they vanished, then he just commented that those people still had a lot to learn, and I know he really loved Mary, there’s no doubt about it. He explained there are things that go beyond sexuality, and that was one of these. He told he felt attracted to those men but love is unique and really rare thing. He told me to tell her to be less closed off and open herself a little more if I had the chance one day and if I had the courage saying it was on his behalf. Maybe with a kind of flower he specified, I think lilies and roses, Not sure. He’d be happier if she lived more moving on rather than being mournful. Lol maybe I just freaked out in that dream. And no doubt he felt loved back by friends and fans. He knew he left a legacy behind him.
I asked if that was his true face and he became bronze , marble, gold and a starry night bust, it felt very real. I woke up feeling happy and relieved. My pillow was soaked lol. That was before I really became a fan of the band and months later got to know by the age of 18 that my mother’s beloved brother, my uncle, had actually died of Aids by the time Freddie did, in 1989, it was sth difficult on those days. It still is. The family always hid it. And years later I got to know my brother was gay. Even being an open minded person, it was hard to accept, we fear for his well-being and at last the love really surpasses any shadow of rejection there might be. There’s absolutely no way I would accept someone bad treating him for that. But we know it’s still a reality, which lead many to marginalization and promiscuity. And that’s exactly what woke people of today’s world fail to understand. They seem to be seeing themselves as the beacon of sensibility preaching morals and good humanity or empty kindness and compassion as are eco social warriors, through the lens of individuals who have the least idea of it other than virtue signalling hipocrisy from a pedestal to others never putting themselves in the shoes of those whom they reprehend. 10 months later of that dream I learned Queen and Paul Rogers were coming to my country after 23 years. At the time my English was intermediate and I wrote a letter in a portrait to Roger and Brian I never delivered. I went to England by myself with my own money and went to his house just to pass by after exactly 10 years liking them. I have no doubts Freddie helped me somehow, I had already read a handful of books on them and Freddie and knew a lot from forums and such. That was one of the coolest most significant tours I did when I was there. Even going inside Buckingham Palace didn’t feel as special to me.
That’s great you’re sharing some of Freddie memories of yours. It’s sth that will probably keep on living as well as his memory. His way of being true to himself really showed, in his music and life. His attitude and choice really paid off, because I never heard a single remark on people talking about him rather than firstly acknowledging telling how great they sounded. His sexuality is second to fourth topics, and people often disregard as unimportant in comparison to what he represents to the history of music. When I mention he died almost 30 years ago to some people who don’t know him that much they just can’t believe, they think he’s alive or maximum 10 years. People know he’s great and his greatness surpassed any prejudice as that’s all his business in reality as it should be to be honest.

Dear Peter Freestone, I've recently watched one of your interwievs, which was about why you've moved to Cheh. Repuclic. It's so nice to hear from someone who has witnessed Fredie Mercury's life intensely. You know the real admirerers of him ( instead of fans) never interested or speculated his personal life. It was always tabloids if you see what I mean. I adored him with the way he was.Lots of love from Ankara, Türkiye❤❤
