Peter Freestone - Innuendo - my thoughts on the album

  • Innuendo, the last album by Queen that Freddie Mercury had a hand in producing. Listening to it recently I was struck by the great variety of music that is on it. From the grandiose Show Must Go On to the deceptively simple Bijou, you feel Freddie was giving it his all. Right to the end Freddie showed his love for his cats with Delilah. Here are just a few of my thoughts on the album.....

Bijou reduces me to tears. Gripping. When I first heard Bijou I thought, “ oh, it’s an instrumental.”. Then I heard Freddie sing those two lines and I lost it. The emotion in his voice as he says My Bijou.

Innuendo is one of my favorite Queen albums. I find myself listening to it a lot theses days because that album makes a clear statement to us that yes, the end is coming but keep yourself going and be free and love life. You can be anything you want to be and be free to yourself. Pretty awesome for someone who knows there fate. For me, that entire album is Freddie saying his goodbye to us and he did it in a wonderful way. He flat out looks into the camera and tells us, “I still love you.” That took a lot of courage and our reply back, we still love you.

My mother, who passed away last year, was a Queen fan and introduced me to their music when I was very little. Her favourite album was A Night At The Opera, and we often listened to it at home. She claimed I recognised and liked Queen's music even before I started talking! I knew that the singers name was Freddie Mercury, I've seen him in the photographs and in the music videos, and when the news broke out in 1991 that he had died, I cried, even though I was only 6 years old. I remember we went out and mom bought me "the new album", Innuendo, on a cassette tape. I couldn't stop listening to it over and over. I started to learn English so I could understand the lyrics. I became a huge Queen fan, them and Freddie in particular meant the world to me. Some years later I made my first real friends who were also Queen fans... To this day I consider Innuendo to be my favourite Queen record. Not only because of nostalgia, I think it's one of the best albums ever made. Amazing, diverse, very strong work. And it's nice of Peter to mention Bijoux - one of my favourite tracks that is rarely appreciated.

Hello again Peter. It's good to see you again and hear you tell your Freddie Mercury stories that the world hungers for. I am a 68 year old female from America. The 70's, 80's and 90's was my heyday. Don't know if things will ever get back to what we know as normal. But during my time of staying home and social distancing with my 5 cats, 1 of which is named Freddie Mercury but I call him Merc I have an abundance of time to listen to Freddie and Queen. Reread some of my books and order a few new ones. The coronavirus is ravaging our country and others around the world. One day I hope to visit Montreaux and see Freddie's statue, amongst other many fun things to do there. I am still waiting to get my vaccination, don't know where all of these millions of doses are going, but one has not come my way yet. Stay safe Peter, enjoy life as much as possible under current conditions. Thank you for the video. Innuendo is a favorite of mine and the video where he looks directly at the camera and says " I do love you" makes me cry. Thank you for being a loyal friend to Freddie and his fans.

It makes me so sad to hear Freddie stayed away from friends when he was ill. Around the time as Freddie's death, I lost a friend & a cousin to AIDS and just a few years ago my Dad died from cancer. Each of their final times were utterly horrible - so, so difficult. I was there so I perfectly well know that with my logic, but not in my heart. With my heart I only remember these magnificent people in my life, their love & support, the fun we had, sharing their triumphs & joys. Laughing with Dad until neither of us could breathe. Flowers suddenly arriving from my friend for no reason but that he'd randomly seen some he knew I'd love. I could go on for pages. Those are the things which stay. Everything else fades because, compared to the years I had with these marvellous people, the illness doesn't matter.

Thank you, Peter for sharing your wonderful memories of your dear friend, Freddie You make us feel closer to him. The slightly mad video has always impressed me with the precise movements Freddie made for each scene, Though not an actor, he conveyed every emotion perfectly and his playfulness is poignant. Looking forward to your next post. Stay well.

Thank you, Peter, for telling us these stories. I had to smile at the thought of him waking you all up at 4 AM for help with the lyrics, and the cats with the feathers... Freddie probably wasn't amused, but what can you expect. Cats will be cats. Please take care of yourself, dear man, and thank you for being such a good friend to Freddie.

Oh, Peter... I 'm. teary-eyed seeing your facial expressions of how much you miss your dearest friend.... bless you sweet man for taking care of him the way you did. Your voice quivers sadly sometimes when you speak so beautifully about him. I lost my dearest friend too, a songwriter & piano player of a 70s Rock band... he stopped all his meds at the age of 35 when his Multiple Sclerosis returned & he lost the use of his fingers, legs & eyesight . He was writing an album for Sony when his MS remission ended, so like Freddie he decided if he couldn't play & record music anymore, life was not worth living. He ended his own life . He was enthralled by a new band named Queen & especially Freddie & introduced me to their 1st album. To this day I listen to Queen & Freddie's solos almost every day. Once heard there's no comparison, is there? It nags at me there is one song that we wrote but he wasn't strong enough to finish . It perfectly describes why he & your best friend stopped taking their meds & the song is so tender & lovely . But, it's not meant to be finished I suppose. I would love to share the lyrics with you but would never post them publicly on here. If you have a way I can send them to u, let me know, I would trust you implicitly ... its like Freddie wrote them with us, they speak for him & Larry too.... if you want to take a peek, let me know @
    coopersusan503@gmail.com
I'll warn u, they are so beautifully written you'll wish Freddie had sung them... if only just once. Take care, Phoebe.

one thing i really enjoy on the live performance videos, is seeing Freddie’s eyes twinkle as he’s about to tease or engage the audience. His sense of playfulness and fun is written in his expression and it’s really beautiful to see. I get that sense of fun on the ’Slightly mad’ recording.

  • @bethford6007

I do see the IGSM video as a more powerful show of strength than how the average person views the video and lyric.
Here you have a man in an insurmountable situation telling it NO I will not cower or pity myself. I will face the end with bravery and stamina until I am no more. ... Death did not win.
Death is a journey we all must endure. Freddie happened to be someone who was alerted in advance with specifics. That alone is something that would heighten anyone's fears and increase their sadness normally. The end of life is inevitable for everyone and yet that was never something he feared and as scary, painful, and confusing it was for him he was the strongest and bravest of men.
Of course I did not know Freddie but that is what I see and hear when I watch IGSM. And I do see it tremendously as a therapeutic goodbye to his bandmates geared to ease their pain - filled with Freddie's humor and playfulness while continuously saying, I've finally done it, I'm slightly mad.
Innuendo by definition is an oblique allusion. Therefore (to me) 'finally done it' could mean gone too far, crossed the point of no return, risked too much (self inflicted - takes full responsibility so band mates have less survivor's guilt). And the 'slightly mad' so easily can mean 'crazy' or 'angry'. Anticipating death, knowing it is coming at any moment could drive you crazy. Medicines can wreak havoc on your mind and senses (make you feel like a banana tree). And sure, no doubt, he was angry with illness as we all are.
A favorite scene is of him sniffing the daffodil sitting in his restful spot to lay down in ... winking over at the band as if to say, 'carry on - I'll be watching from right over here'.
I love that man and respect his talent, beauty, strength, and kindness.

      Death didn't win.

Your analogy means you're really into the lyrics . There's love in life, faith n becoz his life is cut short There's a lot of sadness, yet acceptance of fate.

Innuendo is a very personal album and this person is Freddie and on the other hand the band as a whole. So musically, technically and emotinally sophisticated. This and Made in Heaven are the deepest in terms of lyrics and sound/melodies.

"Innuendo" was like the last big old school rock album to be released and it was absolutely amazing. Then came Sept 1991 when "Nevermind" by Nirvana was released and changed the face of music for the whole 90's.
