He obviously understands what they're saying, his body language is showing it; he's just approaching interviews like Ichiro--he can most likely speak English at a conversational level, but would rather have an interpreter to clearly convey what he wants to say and to double-check on him to make sure that he doesn't say anything that would be taken out of context or offend anyone. Also, Ippei is such a great guy, he's been there with Ohtani since he came to Japan from Nippon Ham and he's basically like a motivator, warm-up buddy, and best friend to Ohtani. He's more than just his translator at this point. He even asked Ippei to be his catcher to calm his nerves down a bit in the HR Derby.

He understands the questions even trout said in an interview that he understands more than everyone thinks. He moved hear 3 years ago and can understand what is being asked. He uses Ippei for a clear question so he can give a clear answer. If I lived in japan for the summers and went back home for the winters I don't think that I would be able to understand questions being asked so he is obviously making it a point to learn. Stephen A is just so ignorant and should just stick to crying over the knicks.

It's not only thanks to a part of the Japanese virtues in nature and nurtured by the culture but definitely also Shohei Ohtani's own character and personality.
For instance, the Japanese national soccer team is known for cleaning up their locker room to keep it neat and tidy and to even make it better before they leave like at FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament. And the Japanese fans also bring their own trash bags to pick and clean up not only their own but their surroundings' mess before they leave the soccer stadiums.
For the Japanese people, it's their norms and that's how we are raised to always respect the others. 💫🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵😇

A rough translation of the content of the Japanese interview.
A: How do you feel about the All-Stars?
O: It was fun. I was a little tired, though.
A:What did you think of Scherzer?
O: I've only seen him on TV, so I wanted to know what kind of pitches he throws. He pitched great and I couldn't hit any of his pitches even though I realized what they were.
    A: Did you hit off-center?
O: Yes, his form was unique and it was hard to get the timing right.
A:How was the pitching after that different from what you normally do?
O: I don't usually try to strike out all the time, but today I tried to get a strikeout from the beginning. I couldn't do it as a result. I threw well myself, but it was impossible because they are all great players.
A: Finally, please give us your impressions of the All-Star game again.
O: It was a lot of fun for two days. I would like to come again. I thought it was a celebration of people who love baseball.

@@AzianJunket I too would like to see them go against each other. Ohtani is a hitter who strikes out a lot, especially strike-out looking. Sometimes he doesn't swing the bat once until the second two strikes at second at-bats. And sometimes he hit a home run right after that. And it was on a pitch that he had passed up in his previous at bat. He always seems to be focused on watching the pitcher's habits and timing when he's up to bat.

See? 1:40, he responded even before the translation.
I can think of a few reasons why there’s a translator, one maybe he’s not that good yet with English esp if it’s an interview, he probably speaks English with the team, at least to some extent.
Another possible reason, that I don’t see being mentioned, he has fans back home. So an interpreter (though cc is common now) would help his fans back home as the answer and even the question is translated not just his answer

    涙を拭いてるようには見えないなぁ。汗を拭いてただけかなと。感動はしてただろうけど、このインタビューは泣くようなタイミングではないと思う。
I saw Japanese media's intervew scene for the first time, thank you!
Unfortunately they have repeated the same questions as the previous ones.So Shohei's face became stiff.
    日本の記者は英語の質問が聞こえなかったのか、理解できなかったのか、、、同じような質問をしてしまったせいで楽しい雰囲気だったはずのインタビューが固い感じになってしまった。

as a multilinguist and a linguist, ohtani is very much an english passive speaker. it's a common thing amongst us who has several languages running in our brain, especially we have to talk in public. Not sure why this mannerism is a big deal as people make it to be. And I personally like it when ohtani and ippei-san doing interviews like this; and that they both work efficient without getting 'lost in translation'.

Honestly, I hope the Angels rest him more in the 2nd half. I want to see him get to at least 120+ innings pitched. Maybe another 200 or so plate appearances, no hitting on his pitching days. Especially once Upton, Trout and Rendon are back in the lineup. The angel's offense is good, they need to get Shohei back to ace pitcher status

@@paholamercedesnova6830 Yes, but each vowel in English can be pronounced a number of different ways (like the "a" in "father" vs the "a" in "ant"). In Japanese, they only make one sound each (both "o"s in Shohei Ohtani are said exactly the same, as with any other "o" sound in Japanese).

@@absterps Oh, I see where you're coming from. The pronunciation of vowels in English varies in accordance to the consonant the vowel is accompanied with, that makes it sound like there's more than 5 vowels. I'd guess that Spanish would be easier for Japanese people to learn since all 5 vowels in the spanish alphabet remain with the same pronunciation no matter what consonant is accompanying it🤷‍♀️
