No disrespect meant but this is hardly bustling is it. I feel sorry for the Traders here because I remember this place when you could hardly walk properly due to the amount of people looking for a bargain and that was mid week. Just goes to show how the high street and markets have changed just like East Street in South London, Thanks for posting.

I was thinking just the same, I remember it in the 70s, and it was packed with people, and traders.

I appreciate this video so much. Live in the Midwest but visited family in Islington many times since 1987 and I feel like Chapel Market (Chap) is where everything converges. Meant so much they way you captured the accents and personalities, sounds of the market, ticking of the taxis. I'll visit this whenever I get 'homesick.' Thank you very much.

Geez brought back memories. I used to manage a Mecca bookies here which seems like a lifetime ago now. My minds a bit rusty but pretty sure it was the Around Midnight shop on the corner at the start of the video.

So is market day only on the weekends? Wife and I will be there next spring, and are going to Camden Passage, but could also walk through there as well.

+Barton Seven I don't know if you will see this but the market is actually open every day except monday. Just be sure to get there before 5/6pmish as that is when everyone will be packing up.

Chapel Market (formerly Chapel Street) is in Clerkenwell, not Islington.

+georgpink0 You are confusing Islington with the London Borough of Islington. I was born in Islington proper (1947) and can tell you that the Metropolitan Borough of Islington was created in 1900, when the Civil Parish of Saint Mary Islington was elevated to borough status. The neighbouring Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury also was created in 1900, by amalgamation of five civil parishes and extra-parochial places in total (included amongst them being the Civil Parish of Saint John and Saint James Clerkenwell). In 1965, these two metropolitan boroughs were amalgamated to create the London borough we know today. Any old and detailed map will show that, in the vicinity of the Angel, the boundary between Islington and Clerkenwell ran (runs still to this day) along the middle of a part of City Road before turning into Islington High Street; running along the middle of the high street until turning into Liverpool Road. Runs along the middle of that road until turning left into Richie Street (formerly Richard Street), there also running along the middle of that street. Despite popular belief to this day that this part of Clerkenwell is in Islington, it is a clear fact Chapel Market has been within Clerkenwell since the land hereabouts was forfeited to Clerkenwell during historical times. If you look up at the Islington High Street side of the corner building now housing the Co-operative Bank you will see two name-signs. One post-dates 1965, indicates the way to Upper Street, and is headed London Borough of Islington. The other pre-dates 1965, bears the name Islington High Street, and is headed Borough of Finsbury (assuming they still are in situ; being so when last I looked).
