    Read the title and came expecting to watch some moron stumble through some half-assed explanation as to why he's a more classically educated singer than Myles and therefore Myles sucks, and instead I was blown away by one of the single most well explained singing tutorials I have ever seen, and as a young'n I watched a LOT of singing tutorials. This was absolutely amazing, you managed to explain what you were doing in such a way that even someone with only a beginner's course in singing can follow (if perhaps not execute, haha). You have an instant subscriber. Keep up the amazing work, my man.

    Thank You for this video Carl. I am currently working on my vocal mechanics. This was spurred by Chris Cornell's passing. I am very attracted to Chris' and Myles' vocal styles. You have opened my eyes to understanding how these vocalists achieve a very powerful delivery even in a quiet section of a song. Now I will be driven to understand it. Following you looking for more details 😊

    Just ran across your channel for the first time, and had to follow after watching the full video instead of just a snipit like I was planning. It also brought to mind another video I saw lately with Music is Win interviewing Mark Tremonti, where Mark commented about how he doesn't have to worry about the key he's writing songs for Alter Bridge in due to the fact that "Miles can hit any damn note he wants". I'll be working my way through your backlist of videos!

    Saw slash and Myles at the paramount on Long Island a few weeks ago. He made it look so effortless. Never once reached or grasped at a note. His stage presence wasn’t the best, but the singing was so beyond excellent that it didn’t matter. He seems like a really humble down to earth guy.

    Excellent video Carl, thanks for the in depth explanation. I'm interested in the concept you talk about towards the end of the video - maintaining pressure/compression as you ascend from the top of chest into mix/head voice. How would you advise going about practising this on a day to day basis with a view to strengthening the top end end of your chest voice and ultimately being able to maintain that pressure? Cheers

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 6 lety +1

      carefully and in time, if you are able to stay narrow and keep good form on the 'buh' and 'guh' exercises that's going to be the best way to really understand how to do it safely and consistently, most people lose form as they go higher. Myles doesn't so he's able to 'sing wide but stay narrow' which is why he sounds so open and free.

    First off awesome tutorial. From how the title looked I at first thought “Oh no is someone actually bashing on MYLES?! He’s a lyrical, vocal genius man WTF?! But I was pleasantly suprised, watched all the way through and enjoyed the hell out of it!
    The inspiration and thought provoking lyrics Myles writes is FROM THE SOUL. It’s literally carried me through rough spots in life having uplifting “likeminded” and relatable songs not only beautifully written but are instrumental genius that complements the power of the lyrics. Our day in age music is losing its lyrical power and having substance and meaning in what we listen to musically, which is why I respect and adore this man and the people he’s played with on his journey in music. Myles I believe has not only touched his fans but lyrically has touched those he’s worked with as he always, ALWAYS writes from the heart in a way we all as human beings can relate to in some way or another that is REAL and not any of the fake shit we have being pushed in the industry now.
    Anyhow with that said, I enjoyed really this video, you got a subscriber and I look forward to seeing more content like this!! Keep on Rockin’ 🤘🏼

He sings very high mixed notes but you'd never think that they are that high because his voice has a natural deepness I guess ... could you elaborate on that and (I don't know where you stand on fry screaming) also maybe how he combine singing and screaming ? thanks for reading !!

  • @RachelGerrard
    @RachelGerrard Před 6 lety +2

    You can achieve that vowel colouring by putting R quality and an E underneath everything (Ree) - you get that grungy sound like Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell, Tool, Nickleback, Creed, Kurt Cobain, etc.

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 6 lety +1

      yeah you can defo hear a bit of that in his sound no doubt about it. He doesn't over do it though, the Nickleback guy sounds almost like a cartoon character just takes it a bit to far.

    • @RachelGerrard

    Hi, is it important to have a neutral larynx and diaphragmatic support? I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say squeeze and pressure, but the more I practice what you call squeeze and pressure the more I understand it to equate to neutral larynx and stomach support--(at least it makes sense in my mind). Am I on the same train of thought as what you're encouraging? Thanks for the wonderful and insightful videos!

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 6 lety +1

      You have to be able to maintain a consistent larynx position through your entire range, this is what SS / SLS will teach you, in other words staying on one vowel throughout and not letting it warp and get wide at the top. Support is a difficult term it really depends what you mean but I think we are on the same page here, if you mean you need to push the right amount of air through the cords yes defiantly and you'll feel that happening more on compressed sounds and less on light ones.

    Perfection is what isn't wanted from the fans of Miles.
    It isn't about perfection and those that choose to share how he could have done better. You probably are scholars.
    He did not sing for you the scholars, he sang for those of us that are not you and are not perfect.
    Share and have fun criticizing but it isn't relevant to those that are fans.
    Yes, we are trying to perfect our lives, but it is from and through the imperfections and the trials and tribulations and the pains we experience because then, we understand life and I do think survival matters more than hitting a proper note and within the proper timing.

      Carl Wehden, indeed. Yet the language and presentation of the title is a poor representation of the content. As a long time fan of Myles, I'm simply saying that were you to include an accurate description you may find more people who are interested. As it is you have written what reads as an insult. through worded presentation alone, and not the video content. Honestly it seems in poor taste. Again, as someone who enjoys Mr. Kennedy's vocals greatly, the title of your video inspires an immediate negative reaction as opposed to intrigue. I wish you the best of luck, but this sort of presentation is a tough sell, for me at least.

      Will have a think, the problem I'm facing is my most popular videos have these kinds of titles, so it's catch 22.. I'd much rather have a positive title but people are less likely to click something that is plain and doesn't stand out. I'm not sure what the solution is frankly but I actually largely agree with what you're saying.

      Carl Wehden you already provide strong instruction. The quality of content alone will elevate your channel. Something along the lines of, " A let's sing series: featuring Artist Name." It would be refreshing to see more REAL high level vocal analysis /instructional content as opposed to any click bait "let's hate, oh no wait..." headers on videos. You've clearly got a talent for teaching and that is big deal unto itself. Thanks for the correspondence. have a good one man!

      Maybe don't make the titles of your videos make you automatically come off that way
