- We got called out for a Rzr stuck in a fence. After they agreed to pay us, they ran off in the desert to hide.
They never did answer the phone or call us back until two weeks later to tell us they weren’t going to pay it. Ha ha
The rest of the video is a montage of sand extractions all over Washington County.
We pull out trucks, vans, cars, SUVs, crossovers, UTV’s , and motorhomes.
The extractions take place all over Washington county Utah. Such places as Sand Hollow State Park, Babylon Mill, Mill Road, Kolob Terrace Road, Apple Valley, Hurricane Utah, Warner valley, and other places.

The messed up part is she likely 100% believes his time going out to help her in the middle of the night isn’t worth anything because they already got help before he arrived. I’m in the service business. If I could collect every dollar I’m owed by selfish people over the past 40 years I could retire and travel the world.
The mom and son duo are likely still squabbling and meanwhile, 4 years later... MOR is crushing it lol 1.66M subs and a seemingly great, joyful outlook on life. Great job turning the other cheek but not letting that stop you from crushing it!

$40 seems unsustainably cheap for having someone drive all the way out there and back, plus all the overhead costs like the time spent trying to get paid. I imagine it is rare that someone doesn't actually need your service, when they call you out there, but I'm surprised that you are able to avoid charging an upfront minimum. Thanks for all the great videos and stories, either way.

@@shawnevans9106 I agree that their CZcams business is very successful. I was commenting on their towing business' rates, which seem to be too low and would typically be set completely independently from how successful his ad revenue is.
You may be right that they charge less for towing, to get enough business to make videos about, but I find that that to be unlikely. I'm pretty sure that they had the towing business long before CZcams because a profitable additional venture for them.

So this popped up today on suggested videos, since i have watched ALL recent videos in the last 6 months or so... and let me tell you how awesome it is to see the evolution of Matt's Off Road Recovery. From the time you started until now, the video's are much better, story telling is much better, and overall quality of the channel is much better. You can tell yall did this from scratch and on your own! Very Proud of YOU ALL! I would like to see a video explaining who everyone is and how they are related or not. I mean I think I have it pretty much pieced together by now but I'm not 100% on it all. LOL.
Matt and Jaymie have boat loads of children who assist on rescues and in the shop. His son Rhett is featured and so is Rudy (father and son have matching beards) There's Tom Tom, Lizzy (who recently moved away), Trevor with the long beard, and Ed the gold miner. I've been watching for about a year.
The real-life story-telling embedded in their builds, in their charity, in their family and in the co-workers they attract and retain is the "best TV" there is. Even though the formula is so simple as "just record us doing our thing", it ticks so many of the boxes for quality wholesome entertainment AND education.

Spot on mate, the prisons in almost every western nation, have a large majority of their population made up of the sons of single mothers. Ignoble men are being produced in these homes of poor decision makers, sponsored to be so by state welfare and it's being ignored by public spokesmen because it's deemed political & career suicide to do so. That's sad . I got stuck in some mud once and a local farmer got me out with his tractor in the pouring rain. He wouldn't accept anything at the time so I noted his address before leaving and sent him 100 bucks . Would have cost me much more I'm sure from a service if they even could have got to me .

Same story here. A local farmer got my van unstuck and wouldn't take more than 20 bucks. I was thinking about 80 but he refused anything but a twenty.
Send their name and number to every recovery service within 100 miles so somebody else doesn't get stiffed.
Also show their faces so people know who to look out for
Probably not that many for one area not a bad idea, 10 emails with attachments added not a bad use of your time.
It seems Matt knows everyone out there, I am sure word got around not only to other recovery company's but also repair shops and customization shops. Heck here in Atlanta bad customers names get around and they find out fast what a small big industry automotive is. We fight each other but we also look out for eachother.

You’re a nicer guy than I am. I’ve only ever had two customers that stiffed my one-man shop, and a tastefully framed still image of each (from my security camera) is displayed prominently on my counter. Excellent conversation starter. And to answer the cranky replies I’m sure to get, a person has to REALLY piss me off to get me to that point. I can work with anyone, if they’re short on cash or struggling financially - I get it. It’s very telling that I have never, NEVER had a “poor person” try to get out of paying me. Not once. It may take a month of payments, but they always pay me in full. Says something about integrity and who has it.

i've fixed loads of computers for free by choice and got cookies/cakes the next week.. an honest person short on cash will not try to explain themselves why they shouldn't pay..

I've tried to pay whatever services I've rendered. Sometimes I might need a few days to pay but I'll try to pay a little extra on top. I'll say it's the interest fee but most of the time people will refuse to take that from me, and will only take what they are owed.
I guess that's why I'm not well off. Lol

Having read many of the comments and judgments about the non-payment case, one thing was obvious to me, you kept your dignity and I'm fairly certain that you would still offer to recover their vehicle again if asked to. As the saying goes 'to err is human but to forgive is divine' or perhaps ' always try to be the better person.'
I was actually on the sea coast and offered $ / beer. They only took 1 beer. It was a issue with a busted differential. We could get back thru the dunes. Furthermore we had a 7month baby. So lesson learned. God bless helpful folks. We now have a better understanding from these folks and from watching these videos. Thank you!
BTW, we got rid of the f-150, got a newer ram sport. No issues in sand, even towing a trailer. 🤷♂️ we also carry some of them yank'em rope/tire Guage etc kit and shackles, just incase.

I'd go there tell them it's going to cost about 10 dollars each day extra they didn't pay, which is a good deal considering what impounds charges, and tell them it's up front before they do a thing. And when they say no I'd say good luck getting anyone else out here because I called every tow company in the area that you rob tow companies. Have a nice day

I live on the coast of Washington, The local tow companies will get your credit card info before they will head out.Especially at night and if they have to travel any distance.

My dad had a moving company. We always loaded the most expensive piece of furniture first, then presented them with the bill before unloading it. That usually did the trick. Once and a while they got stupid and called the cops. Cops reiterated they were stupid and to pay the bill.

i do mechanic work,the expensive kind,transmissions,rear axles and every now and again,engine replacement,all top pay jobs,i never in 50 years ever took a man's work for anything concerning a bill,i got half down and i didn't care whether he paid the other half or not,as my lien is the strongest lien there is,i even toasted a lawyer once,pay your bills people,you may have to use someone again,word gets out you are a bum,forget living in that town,now the other thousands of people paid me with a smile,as they knew they had a rock solid warranty,less than a 2 percent comeback ratio,happy customers make paychecks possible

I really enjoy your channel, not just because of some of the technical stuff in Southern Engineering but because you guys always include life lessons and morals to the story. You seem like a really wholesome bunch of really compassionate, caring, and good people. The recoveries are absolutely awesome especially when you work with trailmater and favorites as well as robbie. I come from a family owned business and there were times when customers refuse to pay. The sad part about the mother and son who ripped you off is that she had a chance to teach her son a valuable life lesson that would be beneficial in his future. Instead she took the low road and basically showed her son how to be a thief and a bad person that doesn't pay what they owe. At least you guys didn't lose much and she certainly lost the opportunity to do the right thing. Keep on doing what you do, 99.9% of the people love you.

You provide a valuable service, that's why they call you. And you should be compensated for that service. The untold story of your cost to get to the scene, recover and pull them out and place them on a hard surface. People have no clue. No one else could help them, that's why they call you!! As someone whose been subscribed for almost a year to Matt's channel I wanted to check out some earlier videos. My God if this would have been the first video of yours I saw I never would have subscribed. You certainly have grown as a content creator and I'm happy to go back and check out your early videos. They show just how much you've grown as not only a channel but also how much more interactive you've become with your audience.
I hope they see this as well as all of their friends. Covered the faces but if you know them you're sure to know who they are. Plus I'm sure their mouths have told a lot of people about what they did.

I got stiffed on one tow once and about 2 months later i would up doing a DUI impound on that same car, guess what, i added the tow i got stiffed on to the bill.. hehehehe.

They didn't though. They dispatched to the location but they had freed the vehicle already themselves so technically they didn't do anything but drive there. Sure it was a waste of gas but there was no service.
MetalHead 4x4 every contractor in pretty much every trade will bill you if you call, then change your mind before you get there and cancel. It’s to pay for the time of the person that goes that route, they still have to get paid plus gas, wear and tear, insurances. So yes, a service was rendered even if it wasn’t the service initially called for. A lot of times for small businesses like this, they only break even on a call like this so it would be better for them to just not answer the call....

I'm sure if the situation was reversed and they had to pay an employee to get out bed and drive out in middle of nowhere would want to be compensated for the cost of doing so. Regardless if the service was still required when they got there, it still cost them money to get to the location, $40. Probably barely broke even. Guess metalhead works for free.
It's called thievery of services, same as stealing property. In some jurisdictions they could be liable for 4 times the amount.

We all get it. Can't tell you how many times over the past 35 years I've showed up to someone's house to get their heat or a/c going and been told it's already fixed. Even better when you are called a thief for expecting to be paid for coming out. Even extra special when it's after hours!
I will never understand how someone could treat a service worker like that. I've never once in my life even considered treating a worker any less than I would've my grandmother. I hate that people like that exist out there and there should be a special "asshole fee" that goes along with their bill.

@@TwinShards It is not "fair use" when people can be identified as scumbags, even if they are. What he can do is go to court, send a repo firm or involve the police (whichever makes sense) and get her to pay the $1000+ lesson that would be.

I'm impressed with the shock load the points where the straps are attached can withstand. The dynamic load those put on the vehicle is much more than a winch would pull. Especially when it's a truck hooked to a big trailer.

I haven't physically seen or touched these but I would expect elasticity to be engineered into both the actual material and the fibre/ weave structure. So that shock is turned into useful pulling force. Stress to connecting points on the vehicles also minimised.

I had a job driving a taxi on Saturday nights. The vast majority of customers are great but it only takes one to ruin your day, or several. It took a while to ignore the errants and focus on the lovely appreciative people. Like you said, It's not worth it.

hope that mother and son need your help again sometime and the suggestion of sending a warning to all the other operators in the area is a good one , worked here in aust for a prospecting company , we wound come across people stuck in the middle of no where and they would be so gratefull for the help but it was amazing how many would fail to return that wheel and tyre that we had lent them for eg
I've done small claims many times in my years of doing business. My state allows me to add all of the costs to collect to the original amount in dispute. Costs like my hourly time working the issue, time and mileage for the trips to the courthouse, even the cost to have the person (or company) served by our constable. I've collected every time. And I guess word has gotten around in the small community I live in, as people are paying now. But, yea, it is a hassle.

It's not just customers, it's also suppliers. (Government agencies as well, but I use my elected officials for them)
Mostly, I insist that people and companies pay for the work and products I supply to them. Some decide not to, so I follow a set procedure that sometimes makes it all the way to court. Never lost
I also had the court insist that UPS pay for a COD package I sent once.
It's part of doing business.

Yeah because that's totally not going to cost him in the long run if they found out and sued. It would likely cost him whatever he makes here on youtube, as it'd be in violation of youtubes terms, and then the client could sue for slander or deprivation of character, she never signed anything, i doubt he has her on recording saying shes agreeing to pay and if he does than it has to be with her knowledge and consent. Even if she admitted she agreed, from my experience shes still likely to win the case in court, verbal contracts mean very little, you need that shit in writing. Also any T shirts of products being sold with her face on it, she probably has really good grounds to sue for royalties and take most of the money the man would even make off the T shirts. You can try and swing low but you'll soon find you're the one with a sore ass if you do that, imo he did the right thing, he got the hell over it, its really no big deal. after all he didn't actually do anything for her.

He can record himself and his clients while performing the service he was contracted to do. They accept these terms the minute they agree to a service.
