The biggest letdown of the Q50 is the 7 speed transmission. I have a 2014 Q50 (with the 3.7) and I feel that if they had the ZF 8 speed, it would’ve been a perfect car. And with the changeover to the TT engine, it would be dead on.

@@clarks2001 It's a let down in the earlier versions. The 2018+ V6 twin turbo motors come with an updated 7AT transmission that is greatly upgraded over the earlier Q50 transmissions. Shifts are much quicker and it can hold up to 600ft-lbs of torque and 700-800whp. Not as quick as a ZF, but definitely a huge improvement over the 3.7 VQ transmission.

Excellent review. Agree that these cars dont get the love (or sales) they deserve. Had a Q50RS for 3+ years then traded it for a Q60 RS. Love both cars. So much fun to drive. Once you ditch the Dunlop run flats and put some really good performance tires on it (I have Mich Pilot Sport4S) it goes even quicker, stops quicker and corners fantastically well. I love that it has a CD, (was rocking some Halestorm on the way to dinner tonight). The Nav works great, not sure why people knock it, Its never gotten me lost, A maps, a map, a map so WTF with the complaints people! I plan on owning my Q60 until im too damned old to roll my ass out of the car anymore. Had 30+ cars so far, and this is my favourite by a long, long way. @@clefable37 Yes I know that the VQ is based on the VG (and the VE that was only available in the Maxima between those two before the VQ came) and the VR38 based on the VQ. The thing with the GT-R was using mostly things that were already avalaible (engine, platform - which is a tuned version of the FM-platform from the Infinit/Elgrand and Z models) and thus keep it as cheap as possible. Well not today anymore.
Still it´s "based" on the VR38 even tho it´s newer yes. Because it´s still the same engine family. The VQ35 from the Maxima also has 80% other parts and the new VQ38 from the Frontier is still a VQ but very different and many new parts. Many changed things and not relatable to the rest of the Nissan engines and specifically for this model and the US market (hope they put this V6 in the Titan).

To make it like a GTR it needs a front and rear LSD. I had a front LSD installed when I had my Pure Stage 2 turbos installed. I had previously installed a rear LSD in my Q50. I can really feel both front tires gripping when using my EcuTec launch control. Shutting of VDC allows full power to all 4 wheels now. As a side note it's now incredible in the snow. This color does to me what Toyota's Lunar Rock does. I keep staring at it but can't decide if I love it or hate it. I'm a big fan of the Q50, every review complains about not being modern enough but I dig it. I'd probably get an RS3 for the money but I think this looks better than a 3-Series or C Class of a similar cost.

I just got the same one , 2021 Q50 RS RWD with performance package in slate gray. This car is super quick and sounds awesome! I agree with you on not listening to music to hear the car but the bose 16 speakers systems sounds awesome too so is a hard choice. I don’t mind the ‘old look’ of the technology since apple play makes it modern to me. The dual screens are quite functional, love having waze app on top and my tidal music app on the bottom without having to switch!!. Too bad gas prices are going up because this thing is thirsty in sport+. I’m looking at RSR springs for a future mod.

They have quite a decent after market community. There is also a 811whp VQ37 manual swapped one and a couple of others in the 3.0t category that are quite high. Also, one of the cheapest to tune to around 400 if you just pick up the 300hp version.

I had a 2003 G35 RWD that I absolutely loved. I had to trade it in 7 years later for a more practical crew cab truck after a divorce (ex got the SUV we used for camping), but I have missed that G35 ever since I let it go. I always had fun getting behind the wheel of that car, and I never had any issues with over 65K miles on it. I know a couple people who bought Q50s after Infiniti rolled them out, and they had build quality issues that were really disappointing. I'm glad you found this Red Sport to be much more fun like my G35 was. I hope this is an indicator that Infiniti is regaining their mojo. Their sales have been scary bad last couple years.

If you wanna talk about being fast, get a 3.7, (which is already fast btw) it’s cheaper, and buy a stillen super charger, it will add 6k to your purchase which is still cheaper than this red sport, and you will still have 4K to do various other mods for what you would get from a red sport. You should have around 600 hp if you have and exhaust, supercharger, intake, tuned on E85, so uh yeah just a suggestion for those that want a faster car! No hate to the red sport it is an amazing car! Would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want any mods, but still wanna be fast and luxurious!

I loved your review of this car. I own a first year 2014 Q50 "Red" Sport AWD and absolutely love it. Normally aspirated VQ37VHR with the All Wheel Drive. It truly is a baby GTR!
