      This is a con. Indie Publishers were getting 65% per credit because Audible let us set our own prices, and our per credit profits were based on that price. However, once Brandon announced this deal, they slashed ALL base prices for indie publishers site-wide and now we're making less than 40%. Audible found a way to turn bad press into good press while screwing indie publishers even harder than before. ACX will be a better deal than being under an approved publisher, but everything will be worse than it was.

    Sanderson took a stand he didn't have to - this is laudatory. Questions are popping up in my mind about other best-selling authors across the genres. It seems likely to me that they didn't take the basic deal, but only fought for a bigger cut for themselves. I don't say this to cast shade on them, (although it really, really does) but rather to highlight that what Sanderson did was exceptional by the standards of the people who didn't. Sadly, that seems to be most best-sellers.

      Look up most of the biggest authors, few of them are hybrid like Sanderson. As in, they are entirely trad published. He is hybrid because he's got indie property out there and trad publishing deals. After his Kickstarter, he demonstrated another level so high that Stephen King testified before Congress that he was destwoying the twad pub industwy! And yes the childish voice is deliberate because King is a Quisling who microwaves salmon. I'm not even a fan of salmon and I think that's the most disgusting thing he's ever written. Some of those other authors are also quite nice, and do charitable things of various kinds, and do what they can but it doesn't mean they're in the same position as Sanderson to apply pressure.
      TLDR; Sanderson has more power over his IP than most of the top ten authors (by income) do and thus can withhold books and make a news story about it.

    What always bugs me out when thinking of Amazon's control of the book market is that, as someone from a third world country, I'd probably never have access to so many books I have if not for them. It'd be nice to have competitive companies who treat authors decently, but most of the smaller companies can't really afford to sell books in my currency, and if they do either their price point is astronomical or they only have a very small selection of books.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor Před 2 měsíci +1

      Kobo has more market penetration in more countries than Amazon but it's hard to make a living without being exclusive to Amazon. I set book prices according to local markets but a lot of authors, even indies, set the US price, and then use automatic pricing for their other markets. Meaning it'd be too high in Mexico, India and Brazil among others. Still, there's only so low I can set the prices and it's hard to know (ok, impossible practically speaking) if much of the market can afford it. Paperbacks are insanely cheap in India compared to the rest of the world, so ebooks haven't taken off as much as you'd expect (I'm not sure the paperbacks aren't cheaper than the minimum price I can set on Amazon for the ebook). But yeah, we want lower prices that make more sense in the individual country, and there's lots of factors to that, including charges from payment providers like Visa.

    I love when super successful individuals in an industry see the universal benefits in banding together with the many little-known or lesser successful members of their groups to positively effect such changes. Wonderful news for all of us. Thanks, Sanderson! Thanks to everyone who has been working together to bring these changes to reality.

    People will probably fault Sanderson for going to audible when they're still far from perfect, but refusing to negotiate in these circumstances can lead to companies thinking it was pointless to concede at all, and either roll back the changes or inspire other industries to NOT capitulate when similar demands are made of them.
    I'm glad that Brandon moved the projects to audible, and I am glad that Daniel kept his off of it.

    Jokes aside, this is amazing. I love to see someone with a big name like Sanderson using their resources to make lasting changes like this. This will impact more people for a longer period of time than a simple donation to some fund somewhere, and the world needs more of that.

    I'm not an author and I don't personally know any authors who will be affected by this. However, I think everyone can agree that it's an excellent change for the industry.

    I do love it when someone with some power uses it to encourage positive change for everyone. That level of decency should be the norm and it’s a tragedy that it isn’t. It’s trite but true that a rising tide floats all boats. Treating authors fairly should genuinely help sales, loyalty and attracting more authors.

    Amazing from Sanderson, while their business practises since gaining market dominance have often been shady I still agree with Sanderson they Audible are a net positive. As someone who's so dyslexic that reading novels is such a slog I don't enjoy it. I wouldn't get to enjoy books without audiobooks and I'm old enough to remember the market before Audible and it was £40+ a book for CDs so I'd get one or two books a year.

  • @dragett34
    @dragett34 Před 2 měsíci +1

    The fact that Sanderson carries a similar weight on the book space as a whole ass union does in other industries is bonkers. If this is how much Sanderson can do, imagine how much a unionized/guild type system for authors/novelists would be able to do.

And I really, truly, cannot recall anyone single person having this kind of impact on a single industry. I'd love for these kinds of movement in the academic book industry. Author's from what I here have to pay for their book to get published, they get a smaller cut, and students have to pay a high premium for the books. And they try to say it's because they sell less volume, but most of the people they're selling to are students, teachers, and independant academic. I'd bet they'd get a higher volume of sales if their books were just affordable.
