I remember watching that episode and not even blinking an eye at your approach, so I don't think you're the only one who's changed 😂. Which is fine, we shouldn't shrink away from looking back and seeing how shit we could be from time to time. It might be unpleasant, but its the only way to fully recognise the meaningfulness of your own growth.

I have to say, I respect the *bleep* out of this video. I think it takes a lot of guts to look at your former self, acknowledge the mess, and address it head-on.
There is something very interesting about this. I've been following your channel for a long time, and when I first found your videos I didn't feel that they were bad or in any way dushy or cringey. But seeing this now, I agree with every criticism you make on the old video. Obviously, you grow and learn and seeing your earlier work you have this reaction. What's interesting is that I agree with you. This happened to me with other creators (like Shadiversity, who also has a similar reaction video) and evidences how the audience grows with the creator, but more than that, how we grow more or less in the same direction. I don't know how much the creator influences the direction in which we grow, but it's certainly interesting to think about. Hope you read this Daniel!

Last year I stumbled on some texts I sent 10 years ago, and I was an egotistical religious as asshole in high school, and I'm just glad I'm not like that any more.
I'm still deeply religious, but not as proud or demeaning.
I looked back at some old forum posts I did (about 10 years ago) a few weeks ago. I never wanted to punch myself so much lol. So I totally feel this pain. I am happy to have grown as a person over having never grew up at all. so that's a take away at least.

This is why it's ridiculous when people get canceled over decades old tweets and such. In the majority of cases the canceled person agrees the tweets were awful, and regrets having ever said anything like them, but we canceled them anyway, ignoring their growth as individuals. As a culture, we should check the level of growth before we condemn people for having been immature in the past.
It is very ironic at 6:58 Daniel in the past starts talking about what Daniel in the present is currently experiencing in this video.
You know in an era where people are so quick to judge, I really admire your transparency about this. It's not easy, but you show that people can grow and develop. We all start somewhere, we all can learn, and you are a prime example of this. You've come a long way, thank you for being honest.

It is motivational to see your growth over the years and looking back. I posted my first video and although its not perfect I'm proud because at least its a start. Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something.

I actually went back late last year and rewatched the first couple Fantasy News(eseses). And, outside of just production quality, there’s clearly been a change in effort and passion towards the channel and what gets placed on it.
It’s been a long ride since 2019, and we’ve all undergone extreme changes in the years since. We all need time to gain perspective, and through that perspective we learn growth.
Keep flowing the Fantasy News, Daniel.
Someday you should go back and remake your Stormlight Archive reviews, I would love to get your updated thoughts on those! The Words of Radiance review especially has some comments about Shallan that I would be surprised if you still agree with.
Character growth can a painful long road but great to see.

I applaud how much you have grown as a CZcamsr. You have become a must watch creator here for me whose videos I enjoy and regularly make my small corner of the world an observably more enjoyable space. I first tried out your channel a few years ago and I just didn't click. But last year I reapproached what you were putting out (at that time) currently and IMMEDIATELY saw a real shift and subscribed to your channel.
Don't come down too hard on yourself, we all evolve but most of us don't have countless hours of our past self recorded and out there in the public forum.
Thank you for what you do here now and for how you have developed in what you're doing.

Massive respect to Daniel. I couldn't be waterboarded into watching and sharing videos of myself from 10 years ago. It legitimatelly takes balls to go over the cringey stuff you did when you were younger.
I remember watching this video. I realized that I just accepted what you said back then about the witcher author and thought of him as a 'bad guy' ever since. But I was never interested in the series anyways, so I don't think it really influenced my behaviour in any meaningful ways. Still, it's kinda scary to think about how quickly I formed that judgment. I'm blaming myself for that and wouldn't put that responsibility on you or your younger self.
I hope that I changed in the last five years as well, so that I wouldn't be convinced by a video like that today. And that my opinions on more important subjects aren't as flimsy... But who knows?
Anyways I'm glad you made this new video. It definitely stired some thoughts about myself.
It also made me realise how long you've been a part of 'my life' which is a wild realisation all in it's self. Here's to the next five years 🎉

(Not really, I love this video and love that you are not only willing to reflect on how things used to be, but do it publicly and turn it into a learning experience for others. Also, for what it’s worth, there’s definitely been improvement and it’s clear how cynical you were, but there are much much worse content being pumped out by people today that feel entitled to success but don’t bother growing the way you have and continue to do.)

Daniel, I really like your reviews, and you have assisted me in getting back to reading after abandoning it for years while work life got in the way. At 64 and now retired, I have declared 2024 my “Year of Reading” and hope to read at least 104 fantasy books. I have watched a bunch of young booktubers and enjoyed many of their reviews. One thing I wish they would do more is open the books and show the font size. As an older person, that is important to me as I decide which edition of books to buy. Thank you for all you do.
This is how you know you’ve grown as a person. Self critique is important and to be able to do it (especially publicly like this) is very open of Daniel.

As someone who has been following the channel since the very beginning, I definitely do not remember your videos being like this. A lot of growth can happen in that amount of time, for both you and your audience.

Hell, just reminiscing about my past self makes me cringe, much less having to see it.
As young adults, a lot of us felt like we had so much to prove. I wore my ego on my sleeve, always trying to prove how smart and witty I was. And it was just a shield to protect a fragile sense of self-worth.
Now that I'm an old man (39), I care a lot less about impressing people and worrying that they'll like me, which paradoxically makes me a lot less insufferable to be around.
We're all just growing and learning. Cringe at your past self haha, but pat yourself on the back for how far you've come.

We all start somewhere and often horribly. You're a very different person now in a very different place and we love ya.
I remember that. It's why I think I swung away from the channel a bit, and got back into it when I peeped a review (I think of Berserk) and noticed a tonal change. Eh, we all do cringe things when we're young. Some folks should have felony charges for what they've done, this isn't so bad.
