    Kreg is by far the leaders in pocket hole jigs. They have been making jigs for year and making improvements along the way.
    The Kreg K5 jig came out just over a year ago and I have had some time to really use this tool and develop some opinions.

    I’ve had all the Kreg jigs from the beginning. My k5 set up on its own table, but with a overarm of 3/4 inch pipe and bungee cord to hold my drill...tremendous time saver!

    With the K5 mounted on the board you can slip that scrap piece of wood into the jaws and across the drawer lids to keep them closed when the unit is hung on the wall.

    Thanks man. I've had my Kreg jig for over 20 years and am thinking about replacing it, but always leary of new stuff. This is a rare actual "review" of a product, rather than just a "I got this for free and now I'm going to pretend to review it" video. Great job.

    I bought this unit after seeing your first video on the K5. I'm really glad you did an excellent follow-up and am looking forward to receiving the unit.
    The first review you said something that worried me. You said they changed the clamping lever from the back to the front. After watching the first video VERY carefully I noticed that this was the proper way to do it. Seeing you pocket hole that huge piece of OSB proved it to me. Imagine doing that with the K4. You would have had to go around the piece to clamp it for each hole. No way!
    Thanks a million for posting this and keep up the excellent work.

    Also, an even quicker method to clamp your board in the jig... Move the sliding brace against the board with the clamp handle already DOWN (in the clamped position), then lift the handle up, and then back down to the clamped position, and it ratchets the clamp tight against the wood. No need for you to click the button twice.

  • @das250250
    @das250250 Před 8 lety +3

    As an improvement for the drill depth you could set the drill to each depth then set the collar. On the plywood that is the base drill a hole into the woods side ( the thin section approx 20mm thick ) with the kreg drill till the collar hits the wood . Mark the wood depth this drill hole is set for with a pen . Then redo a new wood depth setting and so on . You should have several holes going into the wood and marked . In future you only need to put the drill into one of these holes for the wood depth and push the collar up the drill till it hits the wood . It will be lots quicker than the Kreg attachment

    One other thing about the K5 (don't know about the k4 since I have never had one) but the drill block can be used independently of the K5 housing. Comes in handy when you are unable to clamp your work piece into the K5. The drill block can be clamped directly to the work piece.

    Fab update video many thanks. Have a single hole pocket hole jig and was looking to upgrade to K4 or K5 - you have made my mind up on K5. I do have a question and sorry it’s a bit long. I understand (I think) that there are 2 measurements when determining drilling the hole into your material (call it piece A). One is how thick piece A is and you set the depth gauge, and then the other is setting where the collar is set on the drill bit, again to determine how close to the end of piece A - I think the idea is to get the drill bit as close to the centre edge of piece A without popping out the end. So far so good. Then I get lost. What length of screw do I need to select. All the videos I have watched that touch on this (if at all) always use material the same thickness (as piece A). But what if you are putting it into the edge side of piece B - 12mm piece A into 12mm piece B (which in effect you start the screw going into the piece already half way down!! There are so many permutations of the piece B and the different lengths of screws it’s exploding my brain. Can anyone help?

    • @ThekiBoran
      @ThekiBoran Před 5 lety

      Backyard Woodworking
      The only issue with mounting to plywood is it makes it cumbersome if you need to drill long or large pieces. It's better to just lay the long or large piece on your workbench and clamp and drill horizontally.
      I have the older model and the k5. The k5 I can clamp the body to the bench. I have an mft-style workbench. Keeping the jig footprint small makes it easy to clamp then drill horizontally or vertically.

    What are those black clamps on the back used for?

  • @befmx31
    @befmx31 Před 5 lety

    That "2 click" procedure in the manual is critical. Even 3 clicks will cause the clamp to pop loose while the work piece is clamped in. Aside from that, the K5 is really nice to use. However, if you are going to clamp something like a 4 foot by 6 foot board in it, do yourself a favor and put a couple of supports under the work piece towards the ends. One other thing, Kreg's customer service is THE best in the business!

  • @TheHonormemory

  • @KungFuMojo
    @KungFuMojo Před 8 lety +18

    John, I hate to tell you, but you're still clamping it wrong. The process is much quicker than the "pushing the button twice" thing you're doing. Clear instructions are on PAGE 6 of your manual, but here goes. You need the handle in the clamp (down) position to begin, not in the release (up) position. The only time you need to push that top gray button is when you need to push the piston back. So that's your starting point, clamp handle is down, and the piston is pulled back while pressing the gray button. Now you line your work-piece against the drill guide, you then push the piston up snugly against your work-piece. You don't need to hold the gray button when you push it back, so you'll be hearing the adjustment mechanism clicking, that's normal. It even says it in the manual. Now, while holding the piston against the board to make sure it doesn't move, you move your clamp handle up slowly, you'll hear a first click, continue moving the handle up slowly until you hear the second click. Once you hear the second click, you then push the handle back down to clamping position. Done.
    I guess it works in reverse too, the way you're doing it. But trust me, do it the way Kreg shows you how in the manual, and you will see that the clamping process is even much easier. You 'll need to do another follow up review. :)

      Another "issue" is putting pocket holes in a very large piece of material. I'm pretty sure there's no law saying you can't drill the pocket holes in your material while it's laying flat on a workbench.
      Last year at work I had to put some pocket holes in some 10' boards. I had my old Kreg jig sitting on the floor and I was wrestling with it trying to balance it. The boss asked what the hell was I doing. He told me to put the piece on the workbench/horizontally and drill it that way. D'oh!!!

    Kung-Fu-Mojo is right. and the official Kreg videos show you the way Kung-fu is telling you. The only thing I would add that Kreg skips is that when you raise the handle to get the two clicks you have to use your other hand to keep some pressure against the wood with the piston. I thought mine was broken because the video instructor skipped telling us that he was keeping pressure on the rubber clamp as he raised the handle. I would push the rubber clamo against the wood and then let go of it and then raise the clamp and of course there were no clicks. The video instructor is keeping some pressure with one hand as he raises the clamp with the other hand but he does not tell you he is doing it.

    You are still adjusting the clamp on the jig wrong. Kreg says to put the lever down in the clamped position and then slide the piston up to the wood. Hold it in place and lift the front lever 2 clicks. You are done. I kiddingly say instructions are for sissies. ;~) But this is out of the manuel. No I don't think you are a sissy, just kidding you a bit.
    And Yes I realize this was 7 years ago.
    Press down on the ratchet release (F) and slide the clamp
    assembly (D) all the way back. Position the workpiece
    against the drill guide. Move the toggle handle (C) to the
    full-down (clamped) position. Slide the clamp assembly
    forward until the pad contacts the workpiece. (You’ll hear
    the adjustment mechanism clicking.)
    Using the Stop-Collar Setting Block
    *optional accessories
    Holding the clamp assembly against the workpiece, raise
    the toggle handle until you hear the adjustment mechanism
    click two times. Move the toggle handle to the clamped
    position. Check to make sure the workpiece is securely
    held in place. If needed, raise the toggle handle one more
    click. The clamp assembly is now positioned so the internal
    spring applies sufficient pressure to secure the workpiece
    when the toggle handle is in the full-down position.
