The Australian Capital Territory is very similar to, and was modelled after Washington DC. It was designed by American, Walter Burley Griffin in a competition. Canberra's climate is "bracing" but four distinct seasons. Great place to live. Low crime rate, low unemployment, high average income.

    Canberra has an interesting history.
I visted a few times, it was nice to visit for a short time. I couldn't live there though. Way too cold in winter (got to -5°C the other week) and nowhere near the ocean. Growing up and living around the coastline in Qld and NSW I'm just used to being near the ocean and ocean air.
Thanks for doing the tipping one too. I had seen a couple of other American content creators react to with strong opinions lol so I was curious what your thoughts were too. Obviously I also have my thoughts but I don't live in the US so it's a different perspective.

Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory, specifically created for Canberra to be in and is a seperate place from New South Wales.

It is very well situated. If you want the bright lights of sin city, Sydney is 3 hrs north east. If you want beaches it’s 2.5 hrs east. If you want snow and snow sports it’s 3 hours south.

Having its own territory eliminates any dispute over which has priority, the state or the capital city. No conflict over laws and who makes them. The federal city is not subject to state laws.

Due to jealousy between Sydney and Melbourne both desiring to be capital being oldest cities a neutral area ( a territory) was chosen about halfway between the two combatants and now the jealousy includes all three with an indigenous name Canberra (Can-bruh was named as national city the main architect being American Walter Burley griffin

Canberra is situated in the Australian Capitol Territory not in New South Wales. It is it's own territory like D.C in the United States. Like a state it has its own towns as well as the Australian Capitol. It could be said to be the only land locked Territory that Australia possesses except for the unusual fact that it has its own port. Port Jervis is 222 kilometres away but considered part of the A.C.T or Australian Capital Territory.

I lived in DC for two years but I was born and have grown up in Canberra. My ancestors came here in the 1830s way before "Canberra" was even a thought. The area was known as the "Limestone Plains" and had a population of around 2000 in the surrounding area.
There are similarities and differences between Canberra and DC.
Until 1989 Canberra was governed by the Federal Government, its laws and infrastructure were regulated by the Commonwealth. Some of the land here (similarly to DC) is owned and regulated by the Federal Government because it is of historical or national significance. It seems ridiculous that people who live and work anywhere - in any country - should be excluded from having their vote for Federal power to be recognised.
In DC the population bleeds into other jurisdictions that are close. In Canberra (or the Australian Capital Territory) we are quite separate from other populations.
In DC lived 4 miles from Maryland and knew people who lived so close the the Potomac on the Virginia side that they had a better view of DC than their home state. This isn't sustainable. When it takes you 5 minutes to cross a bridge to get to an entirely different State in two directions (and the laws are so different) it's asking for trouble.
"No taxation without representation" is a chant and slogan I heard a lot while I was there and tend to agree.
At least in the ACT we have representation. We have a very "Democratic" and left-leaning population (mostly because we actually work in government and are exposed to the realities of public policy creation and maintenance) compared to the rest of the country.
I hope for the same for DC.

In Australia, everyone votes regardless of whether you in a state. You vote for you local members of whatever party you think will do the best for you. That local area is called a seat. At the moment there are 93 seats and you need to win 47 seats to form government. The head of the party that forms government is the Prime Minister. You don't vote for the Prime Minister.

Grew up in Canberra and swear to god this vid is a bunch of dot points put together from wikipedia. Anyone could google them if they had the slightest bit of interest. Which usually they arent. And the whole location in the mountains for health reasons is nollocks. So in short because Sydney and Melbourne had such rivalry a decision was made to locate a capital city betwern the 2. Once a site was chosen in 1908 on the rolling limestone plains a competition was held to design a city suitable as a capital. An american Walter Burley Griffin won the competition and a modified version of his grandiose plan was developed and Parliament was officially "moved" from Melbourne to the first Parliament House which opened in 1927. A 2358 sq km parcel of land around Canberra known as the Australian Capital Territory was allocated as a seperate territory within NSW. Canberra is the seat of Federal Parliament and the Austrlian Publice Service, which is the largest employer in Canberra but only slightly more than the private sector. Its a beautiful city surrounding a large man made lake nesting among surrounding hills. It can get cold in winter but equally hot and dry in summet. Its great for families and outdoor activities and is home to national institutions galleries and museums. Back packers and younger travellers are never really enthusistic about Canberra. It doesnt have the vibes of the other major cities. But it really is worth a visit.

Do the residents of the District of Columbia get to vote, and if they do, doesn't that mean they have the same rights as those that reside in the individual states? If that being the case, why can't they be called a state or territory? Canberra being the Capital of Australia, and being located in the Australian Capital Territory; they operate a government like the other states and territory, seperate from the Federal Government. So that being the case, does the District of Columbia have a government seperate from the Federal Government, or is it controlled by the Federal Government? Just wondering.

Imagine giving Canberra-Jervis Bay statehood. At least it has independence which is close enough. NT fair enough. Norfolk Island lost its independence in 2016 and was gerrymandered into ACT after its economy collapsed.

This guy has done his research unfortunately he's not Australian so he doesn't understand what actually happened they didn't want the Capitol to be in Melbourne or Sydney because there's always a risk of the population turning on the politicians so they made sure that Canberra was a good distance from both of those cities and they kept it small an exclusive to keep out the so-called unwashed masses if you look at the layout of Canberra it's an unconnected arrangement of Districts and suburbs which is perfectly designed to inhibit rioting or mass protests.

Mate, don’t expect anyone who lives outside Canberra to say anything nice about it. It’s like asking MAGAs to say something nice about DC! People today do not understand the intense rivalry that existed between the colonies. Neither Sydney nor Melbourne would concede to the other so neutral ground had to be found. It’s a myth that Canberra is half way between the two. It’s not. By car it’s about 3 hours to Sydney and a bit over 7 hours to Melbourne. The location was largely determined by topography more than geography. Two American architects designed the original layout in an international design competition… Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahoney. It is still a planned city within the Australian Capital Territory, with its own elected government. We also elect 2 Senators and 3 Representatives to Federal Parliament. It is a beautiful city and you are close to nature regardless of where you live. There’s a good reason it’s called the Bush Capital. There is no heavy industry, tolerable traffic congestion, clean air, green spaces galore and a relaxed lifestyle. The amenity of a city that’s nudging 500,000 people and the quality of life you get in the country.
