  • An in-depth trip report on-board Qantas Project Sunrise London to Sydney non-stop research flight QF7879. Check out all the unusual flight details, research, well brings and the secret of double sunrise on the World’s Longest non-stop flight.
The flight is not a typical passenger flight; it is a delivery flight and a research flight. The brand new Boeing 787-9, VH-ZNJ painted in Qantas special Centenary livery operated this history making flight in just 19 hours and 19 minutes from London to Sydney non-stop covering over 17,000km! (10,500 miles)
Qantas has named its endeavor “Project Sunrise” after the airline’s historic ‘Double Sunrise’ endurance flights during the Second World War, which remained airborne long enough to see two sunrises. This flight is a prove of overcoming the final frontier of aviation, linking non-stop flights from East Coast of Australia to London and New York.

I don't think that was B777. It was most likely an A340-500.
      Back in 2003-2004.
For LA to Singapore route, A345 was the only plane that can fly that far and was the only plane that Singapore Airline chose to do that route. It was Singapore airline's longest flight and also was the world longest flight.
B777 couldn't fly that long, even for Extended Range version. There's a SIN-LAX flight for B777, but they have to stop in Tokyo first, then fly to LAX.
In today, Singapore airline is using the specifically modified A350 to do SIN-LAX flight, (A350ULR, Ultra Long Range. Airbus literally made this specific mod for Singapore Airline, there's no other company with this A350 mod)

Very interesting. I took a long flight on Qantas from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand several years ago. Even then Qantas was on top of the science to regulate our circadian rhythms and make the flight seem much shorter than it actually was. Some of the methods employed on this flight were used years ago on that long flight. Meals were given at calculated times as were the times the cabin lights were extinguished and we were asked to try to sleep. I am still impressed to this day by how well Qantas accomplished this to maximize the enjoyable experience of the flight.

Thank you. 747 is where my love of aviation started. Every flight played a huge role.

Congratulations QANTAS. I had my first international flight with you in 1967 - London to Sydney, Boeing 707 'The City of Geelong' before flying on to NZ.

What a super chill Captain and crew, I’m normally a nervous wreck flying or watching flight videos but the Captain put me at ease.

It's not as it was a risky flight, with a plane that has been around for years. They guy probably had to go home anyways.

Cromzo Lui QANTAS not Quantas. It stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Air Services. It’s an acronym so no U.
