Ultra Long Haul - Air New Zealand B787 New York to Auckland Flight

- Air New Zealand has just launched non-stop flights between New York and Auckland, New Zealand. I was invited to fly on the inaugural flight which is currently the fourth longest flight in the world. The flight time was 16 hours 35 minutes. The video documents the whole flight experience from takeoff to landing.
However, the inaugural did suffer a setback with a storm enroute which required additional fuel for safety so some bags were left behind. The current inward-facing Business Class seat on Air New Zealand will be replaced by a new product in 2024. I visited the new Skynest mock-up in Auckland. For the first time ever, economy class passengers are going to have the option of stretching out for some sleep on actual beds during their flight.
There are also some great views of JFK Airport and New York City from the helicopter by ZIP Aviation in this video. zipaviation.com/
My dad is the first officer in this video. He’s so awkward, but it was adorable how excited he was when he got home and told us he was in a video 😂
Oh wow...
Great dude🔥
I can confirm that is not the case, as I am the dad and I was very calm. My child is lying!
@@FreeMusicSpecialist nah you’re not my dad
Im the dad my son is lying
I'm a kiwi and I'm embarrassed by our business class seats. The worst in the world imo. Why they would design them to face away from the windows and facing other passengers and with your feet sticking out into the isle for everyone to see, is beyond me. Worst design ever.
Maori tradition 😂
I flew on a Cathay Pacific flight about 10 years ago that had that configuration and hated it. Why make passengers have to stare at each other for 16 hours. Who wants to watch someone drooling in their sleep? I wonder if the herringbone layout is copywrited.
Absolutely agree mate!…terrible idea😂Business product, (Q-Suite) Qatar, ANA, Singapore, Emirates all blow Kiwi Air away!!…otherwise a decent airline, especially when comparing to the Gringos😂
Planted comment: Do "kiwi"s really refer to themselves as "kiwi"?
All in all everything looks good but the business class configuration, like you rightly said , is the worst I’ve ever seen…….for me so far Qatar has been the best, followed by Singapore and Etihad……..Emirates is good but not great……I’ve heard ANA and Korean are superb but have yet to try….
14:44 When you hear "50, 40, 30, 20, 10", and especially "5", you know is a really, really smooth landing.
On Ryanair you hear “50, 10”
@@andreitalpa5676 300, we have landed
Aka butter
In the butter song they should do 5 after 10 so it is like, 100, 50, 40, 30 , 20 , 10, 5 butter
Bottah 🤤
People who work on flights are so hard working. To keep every person in a great mood for the whole flight you have to love your job. Thank you for posting
Yes…. It’s an exhausting job… plus dealing with jet lag is horrendous….plus dealing with unreasonable entitled passengers.
I really don't like the layout of those business class seats. no privacy, can't see out the windows, get your feet knocked by passer bys. I'm 6'6" (198cms) and fly business because there is absolutely no way I could survive 17hrs in economy.
Totly agree wd u
Agree
That inward facing herringbone config should be outlawed - flown Virgin many times and worst seat orientation ever
Specially no windows
It makes no sense at all, and they’re planning a similar albeit less angled arrangement for their ‘new’ business class next year. lunacy.
As a pilot that used to operate those kind of flights I can tell you what many people don't realize on that routing is that once you coast out from Mexico there is really nowhere to go if you have a problem. It's quite a long time to reach any kind of diversion airport. My worst nightmare wasn't an engine failure but rather an onboard fire.
Not true, there is plenty of water below to knock any fire out!
I live in Baja, Mexico, and pretty often the flights from Texas on route to Australia or new Zealand pass above and you can see them, and always question my self after this point they have nothing but water below for several hours, and find that kind of scary and amazing at the same time, and even worst because most of the time they pass at midnight o completely dark, so I cannot believe the feeling of having the darkness of the Pacific ocean in front of you.
But ditching in the water would lead to just as much fatalities
@@theaviationloverroams1545
And the other choice would be ???
You were a fearful pilot?
Nothing is ordinary about New Zealand; everything about this exceptional country fills me with pride.
Especially how they treated their people in the last three years. Should all be on trial.
@@BjornFlower-qx9ur Bullshit! Get a grip
Is that why there's so many K1s in Aussie ? 🙄
Hi Sam, your the passenger with greatest access. Thanks for bringing us along on the first Ultra-long haul from New York to Auckland. Flying on 747 in the 70s, when I was a kid, I just can't imaging these flights. Wow!!!
It would be 10/10 if business class had a better layout.
It really is garbage
Not sure why they didnt adapt the layout other airlines use like United's Polaris Business Class. This one does seem quite a pain.
Thankfully the new business class config is coming soon
The replacement biz product can't come too soon!
@@serge933 they are.
As a kid it was always my dream to go to Australia. Never in a million years did I think I’d work for a major cruise line (for 6 year), and travel the world. At one point, I’d resigned. Eventually, I went back. The first itinerary when I came back? Australia / New Zealand, and everywhere in between.
I was amazed by the beauty of New Zealand. I loved the bustling cities but also the stunning views that I never expected but now hope to see again in the future. The people were incredibly friendly and hospitable.
I’ve never flown Air New Zealand, but it’s on my bucket list now.
You have to visit NZ to fly on Air NZ, both the country and the airline offer great experience!
@@SamChui I would love to.
ANZ Bussines class 1-1-1 is worst seat😢
I have never experienced flying in business class, always dreamed off and is on my bucket list. Thank you for sharing the experience and most importantly thank you for been genuine on all of your videos !
As a Kiwi, helicopter pilot, and an Air NZ fan… loved this video!
Oath! I’m from Wellington I didn’t even know air New Zealand did long haul flights!
Sam, I've never seen you so excited and happy!! Just wonderful!
Hooray for Air New Zealand for being so cooperative and forthcoming with this video. Good luck to them!
Your videos really help people to make informed decisions about what to expect from specific air line companies. Thank you very much.
New Zealand it is so amazing ..and New Zealanders are so friendly and happy people . After visiting Australia ( people from Sydney are a pain in the neck … People fro. Melbourne are much nicer and open minded )…. I am not coming back to Australia …def going back to New Zealand ! Looking forward to get there ASAP
Having been to NZ 6 or 7 times in my life and being an Aussie, I find many NZers rude and insulting as you are an Aussie. I’m quite shocked at times. Me thinks it just the chip on the shoulder little brother syndrome.
Funny thing, half of NZ live in Australia! Mustn’t be that bad here.
Point is you get idiots where ever you go to be fair.
@@austiwollongongwolf Sydney is hardly a representation of Australian people either, as a kiwi who lives in NZ but visits Australia regulary i find Australians much more friendly and open , maybe it's just me but kiwi's aren't really that friendly and often very standoff..ish.
Wow what an amazing experience in the chopper. Love the video. Cheers from Belgium.
I like how you make your videos comprehensive...food,flight route, drinks, takeoff and landing, wings, views, airports and seating. Thank you.
I live in New Zealand with my mother and I love aviation. I was talking with my mum one time and she told me all about her experience on air New Zealand, she told me that the flight attendant sat down on the two free seats next to her took off her shoes and put them all in her face. I told that was her experience but she wouldn’t listen to me.
Omg miss all the familiar faces from the crew🥹so happy to see Lina my girl still living the best life of flying! Sending love to all of my NZ family 💜💜💜
WOW 🤩 You get the best aerial view of places from a helicopter 🚁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁
Fantastic video, and watching the behind the scenes on the airplane was amazing , very rare to see. Well done 👍
Didn't know you could just fly above an airport that way. Amazing views btw.
Sam, you make it possible for mere mortals to share your unbelievable experiences! Many people would not be so generous. Thank you. 🙂
Marvelous! Nice airline with beds! Love the cockpit views on a this nice new plane.
Only Sam Chui can get that permit to fly over a JFK airport like that!
Loved how the guys waved in the tower!
Greetings from Sweden.
I was extremely lucky to be able to do it. Credit to The JFK tower and Zip Aviation helicopter pilot Andrew!
If you you pay the money anyone can do it like me 2 weeks ago
Not true
@@SamChui I am your new subscriber 😊
Think about it: flying a chopper over the hadr stand and terminals, at an airport, is the safest place. No other air traffic to worry about in that spot!
I'm so glad to do something like this. Well done Air New Zealand and also well done to you to doing it. ❤️
I have never flown to anywhere. It's pretty amazing to see the world through your eyes. You make the experience feel so real😊
Most flights are nothing like this. Usually packed in like sardines and you get a drink and a pack of crackers. About half the time the entertainment system doesn't work. I suppose New Zealand Airlines is a premium carrier so it's a different experience.
Thank you, Sam.
Would loved to have such a helicopter tour of JFK and NYC!
Thank you Sam for inspiring and helping me to create cool travel videos, it helped me boosting up my travel page to over 1k sub finally 😊😊✨✨
Air New Zealand’s flight attendants are really so friendly. They’re equally friendly to the economy passengers as they are to first class. The food is also amazing. Definitely one of my favourite airlines.
ANZ doesn't have F Class.
I agreee 💯
I agree
Yessirrrrrrrrr
B787 is a private jet
Yes! Love the great engine sounds and cockpit footage included. You should do that more often
Also what a thrilling helicopter trip over JFK and New York city. I like it .
What a great video, Sam. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I enjoy watching your videos to see the different classes on the different airlines. The Air New Zealand staff seem so friendly. I am eagerly waiting to see how Emirates and others upgrade the A380 business class from Perth, Australia to Dubai/Europe as I am saving for the next two years just so I can fly business class. Your videos make it seem amazing. Please don’t stop posting.
I really love air nz. Flew it domestically and to aussie, never a problem and super friendly and helpful staff
Im an ozzy and always prefer airnz over qantas
Everything seems to be nice there; food, crew members, seats, NZ people... What a culture! Hopefully I can be there some day...
Great video. I have been travelling internationally by air for over 50 years and I have always had good service on Air New Zealand
I’m amazed Sam actually got to fly on a helicopter around JFK, that airport is a fortress. I would love to fly Air NZ sometime, the flight attendants look friendly and the food looks great.
One of the few business class aircraft in the world where you can't see the outside.
Yea, dont get whats up with these aussie and zealand airlines from down under... qantas turn their windows black in their 787 flying from Australia - London. Can´t see shit outside ... and if you ask attendant to see outside you get a no sir. Weird behavior ...
It’s likely so they can add more business class seats and still have room for a lay flat bed. It angles to the center of plane to make it easier for cabin crew to serve the business class travelers.
I have flown 10 hours from Honolulu to Kansai on a typical economy seat near a window. Since the route was over the ocean. There was not much to see.
On a 17 hour flight. You would likely try to sleep 6 to 7 hours. The next 10 hours is just watching movies, reading book, or gaming on phone, tablet, laptop.
@@liquidsnow1 I think they do it to help reduce jet lag, Air Canada does it too on their 787s on flights from LA to Toronto
What does that mean? I always get a window seat
@@DAR25427 on the 787 there is a program on the flight attendants computer to dim the windows like a transitional lense. They can make it so passengers can adjust it or they can set it to a certain hue. But on this one the herringbone faces inward away from the window.
Thanks for this Sam. I offloaded your flight in Auckland so it’s interesting what goes on inside while we’re outside working. Thanks for giving a shout out to Air New Zealand! Hopefully we’ll have an upgraded layout on our new aircrafts
Nice to see that you are always happy and smiling, alot of people can learn from you.
Good video again:)
The black planes from New Zealand look incredible
It fills me with pride to see you showcase our brilliant national airline. I've flown many airlines, and Air New Zealand consistently is my preference. It feels like being home. The aircraft are so beautifully lit, and I love how our unique culture is so well shown to the rest of the world. I'm so glad they got you on board, Sam!
Maybe you should fly emirates. Leaves Air NZ in the dust.
@@ab-bc2gr absolutely not haha
OMG Take those masks off!
I can't believe a plane can fly that far with no stops. I can't help it, when ever I see the New York skyline on a clear day and see the Freedom Tower rising so high, I think of "that" day. It's etched in my mind, never to be forgotten.
I've never seen a pilot actually fly a plane, holding the wheel like that, bouncing. Very cool, thank you.
Mas de 16 horas de viaje, es alucinante el tiempo de vuelo. Buen vídeo Sam Chui.
Man, I love Air New Zealand. I really miss the Auckland-Los Angeles-London flight (NZ1?). Absolutely our favorite way to go to London from California. We've never had a bad flight with Air New Zealand.
I’m glad to hear your experience with Air NZ’s been good. Mine’s been the opposite and despite the fact I’m a New Zealander, I absolutely avoid our national airline for international flights whenever there’s an alternative.
I travelled Sydney to London with two young kids on Air New Zealand. They were so helpful! Also Best Airline food ever!
The JFK - AKL route is now crowned NZ1 (with AKL - JFK being NZ2), LAX - AKL is now NZ5!
I’ve had a few bad experiences - but mainly shit cabin staff in business class - which, when you’re paying the additional cost is unacceptable (I’m also a kiwi too)
@@mandyellis876 Ok. Most people think otherwise but you're entitled to your opinion I guess
Flew San Fran/Chicago to Auckland flight last year. Amazing service, Air New Zealand the best of the best!
I once flew on a 787 ANZ flight from Hong Kong to Auckland. That was one of the best landings i've ever experienced.
Strange layout, like being in a hospital. I'll stick to B777s. Great video and the access you get is incredible. Well done Air New Zealand
Strange business class layout, like being in a mortuary. 🤣
Layout to make the passengers to spend more time in sleep and not to spend time on looking outside thought the windows. Results of minimise FA's workload. Smart design 🤣
The 777s have the same cabin layout, although 1-2-1 instead of 1-1-1. New business class cabin is coming from 2024
I was thinking the same thing. Given the choices of business class options this one lacks the privacy and sense of space on other airlines. I’m a huge fan of Air New Zealand but I think the sweet spot is their premium economy option.
It looks weird but it's very comfortable and means they can have more business class seats in less space with everyone having direct isle access. Having the seats reclined during takeoff and landing is awesome as well. When you're lying down in the bed position it feels like it's fully your own space and nobody else is around.
I think this is like parking lots where angled arrangement might provide more slots- or not?
Sam while in New Zealand you need to catch a flight to Queenstown, the plane comes down between the mountains as it lines up for the runway the views are incredible.
The quality at Air New Zealnd is really great. I flew 2 times from Singapore to Auckland and from Christchurch to Singapore, it was really great!! Air New Zealand is my #1 airline for long haul!!
This looked like a nice straight and smooth flight. The food looked interesting.
That is awesome! Wow, what flight that must of been! ❤
That was a butter landing. We could even hear the 5 callout 🔥🔥
Excellent, Excellent, you are the best Sam. Magnificent video and my fellow Colombian stewardess was wonderful. Air New Zealand is awesome. Congratulations Sam.
9 hour uninterrupted sleep must be a record or some really good ambien! Great quality video.
5 sleepy tablets sleep 2 days 10 sleepy tablets sleep for a week 😮
Such an exciting flight. Aviation has come such a long way in long haul flights.
Air New Zealand is one of the best airlines in the World with one of the best cabin crew.
Yes on this Air New Zealand Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane flight from JFK airport to Auckland airport they left behind some luggage in JFK airport.
Ranked 20th place in Skytrax best airline survey.
I flew the same flight recently and it was 17:30 hours long. Gotta love Air New Zealand
It's so cool to see the Air NZ 787 mockup still being used after all these years. I designed and project managed the manufacture of that structure some time around 2011. It's been used in so many of their commercials, safety videos and physical mockups of future cabins throughout the years. It does have some signs of looking tired now though, when you look closely at least.
It was a pleasure watching this video having watched so many of yours over the last couple of years. I hope you got to stay here for a few days at least? Also I can't believe that chap flew to New York just to turn around an fly back!
Proud of you. Well done
No you didn't.

I used to watch an Air NZ flying LAX to London pass my cabin in Minnesota about 11PM every night pre pandemic. Always wanted to fly tha route with them.
Its like seeing a old, dear friend every time. You get use to seeing a familiar sight like that. I can relate.
Such a beautiful plane, beautiful country, amazing airline!
Wow - that helicopter tour intro was perhaps your best! Great video. And look at that food!
Your videos are very well put together - better than most airline’s official content 👏
I was actually tracking the inaugural flight, knew you would probably be there! Thanks so much for this video, keep up the good work.
It’s the only airline we fly internationally as a family. Air NZ premium economy is fantastic. We have done several long haul in this class with them and the service and standard has been brilliant every time 😊 🇦🇺
Yay! Glad to see more of your videos, Sam!
I really enjoy your content. Revs up the juices to travel more.
I just love you Sam (not in a creepy way lol) you're so full of energy and so happy and your videos make me smile. Don't ever stop posting. Love it
Hey eggpiss how are you
hey Sam its its just Y & Z its next alphabet it will take 17 hours
What kind of love is creepy?
Love the helicopter ride around JFK 👍
I had a helicopter ride over New York city in August 2009.
I actually live in New Zealand but we been to Brazil.
We live in Christchurch then flew to Auckland on a brand new A321neo.
Then we gone on a Dreamliner from LATAM to get to Santiago. (it took 10 hours)
Then a VERY VERY noisy A320-200 to get to Brazil. (3 of the longest hours of our life)
We arrived in Sao Paulo then slept in Sleep Inn Guarulhos.
Then in the morning, Very early, we went on an A320-300 from Azul to Belo Horizonte. (59 minutes)
Then we spent 49 minutes on an ATR 72-500 also from Azul to Santana do Paraiso.
We arrived in Ipatinga also known as Santana do Paraiso for 2 months.
oh my goodness that is the longest text I ever written.
I havent traveled in years but i recently discovered your vids Sam and i must say I love the videos. It reconnected me with traveling. Going to Mexico soon and planned to watch your vids on the trip.
Keep up the good work❤
Been on a Dreamliner from Birmingham UK to Barbados, a 9-hour flight. The Dreamliner is a wicked aircraft, I have never known 9 hours pass so quickly, a truly beautiful aircraft in everyway
@D R Well they say, you are either a Boeing or Airbus man. I'm Boeing all the way.
👈 I love Airplane ✈️✈️✈️
I'm all for direct long haul flights. The Sky Cabin will be an added bonus. It would be a amazing to be horizontal for four hours! Great meals and cabin crew. Another great video Sam! 👏👏👏
If there's only six beds, and 3 sessions of four hours, sounds like only 18 out of potentially hundreds will only be able to score this.
Imagine being woken up after a 4 hour nap in the middle of the night - I foresee many disgruntled passengers.
@@matthewchan1 It's probably cost regulated anyway.

Capt. Chris collabing with Sam is one of the greatest moments in aviation social media!
For me the business class looks weird and you are sitting too close with your neighbours (unless you like chatting and staring at strangers)
True. There doesn't seem to be much opportunity for privacy (or not being face-to-face) unless laying down in bed.
Well at least Kiwi's are very friendly
What's wrong with staring at strangers?
@@kentd4762 at least that's going to change soon. Air new zealand has already revealed their new business class seats with doors
great to know of your very normal yet rarely heard of around here, and, most likely professional reaction; it's a farce! It's like a group interrogating quarter🤣!
Thanks for sharing very informative video and excellent photography congratulations 👌
Thank you for covering NZ :)
Great video, thanks Sam. Can't say I'm wowed by those Skynest beds. The word 'Coffin' springs to mind. I'm also not keen on the business class inward facing seats. I love to look out of the window on a flight, even a night flight. The bed configuration also doesn't look particularly comfortable. A shame because I'd definitely like to fly Air New Zealand - the crew looked so friendly and helpful.
Most New Zealanders are friendly, helpful and full of kindness. I have been living in Auckland since the 90s.
Coffin pretty much sums up the seats, believe me.
I had the best long haul flight with Air NZ Three years ago LA to Sydney in Premium Economy. You were treated like Business Class Passengers, food was prepared individually and bought to you individually, not on a heated trolly rack and on a round crockery plate with real cutlery. You had your name on the TV screen to welcome you to your seat.
The personal attention you got from the cabin crew was amazing, I never felt like a Premium Economy passenger more like Business Class without the seat. Leg room at the time was amazing.
I have flown Cathy Pacific, Lufthansa and Qantas Premium and they would not even come close to Air NZ.
But looking at the video, it would appear that Premium now get the Standard Ready Made Meal, just a step up from Economy.
I would hope that the service in Premium has not been downgraded. Air NZ at that time I’m sure would of been the Class Leader in Premium. Lufthansa was very average, Cathy about the same, Qantas was better but standard way too low compared to NZ at the time.
I only just returned on Qantas a few days ago on Premium to and from London. A slight improvement on three years ago, but still substandard to Air NZ three years ago.
I hope Air NZ have not gone backwards?
The Premium Economy meals are still much better than Economy, but no longer the same meal served in Business class.
@@ScottMoyse pity, they made you feel extra special at the time. Going backwards to the QANTAS level.
Sam, your videos are always top rate. Keep up the good work.
I just saw video with FlyRosta and you are there! That is so cool. I love to watch your videos!
2:30 that was extremely offensive of him to say
Their menu is improving too, even for domestic flights within NZ. Like being served a 3 course meal. Plane probably only operates at half its maximum legal capacity, just so that it can make the very long trip. 200 is still a lot of passengers.
Kia ora, Sam! I just wanting to say I love you videos and New Zealand looks charming. I wanted to go to New Zealand for life. Kia Ora!
Oh what a long journey sam..it is fantastic.
such an amazing video, Sam! thanks for uploading, as always.
this video was well-timed as the fiance and I are considering having our honeymoon in new Zealand + fiji!
What a great combo
Wow. As a former wine judge for Air NZ (and other international airlines) offering the TWR field blend and Kumueu River Mates Chardonnay (amongst the world's best) is very impressive for Business Class.
My brotherinlaw had the Coddington Chardonnay with Kumueu River, so I immediately recognise the bottle.
Sam...I am 69 years young and from the BIG Apple. I have lived in Toronto and employed by CAIL and then AC and am very familiar with NYC airport's. Welcome to NYC ! and as always, great post !
Gosh, that was exciting. The helicopter ride was a fun surprise and the Māori prayer was interesting. I’m hoping it was just mood lighting in the cabling and the Sears aren’t really purple. You’re such a good photographer. Thanks.
Wow Sam! Just Wow! It looks like that was an Amazing helicopter flight over JFK and the Inaugural Air New Zealand 🇳🇿 787-9 Dreamliner from JFK-AKL looked like an epic long haul flight…

Flew often with Air NewZealand often since early 90's - always great service & later years we hit the pointy end of the plane. Food & service was excellent as we did the SYD - LAX run often for work during the Y2K crisis that never happened :)
Thank you for another great video
WoW...Really Nice to see Air Traffic Control Waving..So Precious
I enjoyed today's video as well. At a glance, the business class arrangement looks really strange. privacy....:), but the flight attendants look really friendly!
Being a Brit living in Bali I've flown between London and Bali loads of times, mainly on Singapore Airlines via Changi, but in June 2019 I did London Heathrow direct to Denpasar Bali on Garuda Indonesia. I think that was 18 hours. Incredible flight. There was maybe another 20 passengers on the plane. Could really stretch out. It was weird to get on at London and arrive in Bali without needing to change. Would love it if Garuda reinstated that route.
Thxs for the trip to Auckland
