Sorry, Martin... luv ya... but this ain't Earth. Earth is long forgotten in the DUNE timeline. The Fremen are the descendants of Zensunni pilgrims who've been wandering from planet to planet for untold generations, finally adopting Arrakis as their own.
Edit: I don't quite agree about Paul being emotionless in DUNE: PART 1. He's trained as a Bene Gesserit, they don't allow their emotions to run rampant; they hide their feelings except when alone or with a trusted loved one, as Jessica demonstrated. Also, Paul is a teenager and appears to be an introvert who lives in his thoughts. Under duress, when the Harkonnens attack, I don't think Paul would let his emotions run wild. He's also trained to think and calculate as a Mentat. Once he becomes the leader of a holy war, then he has to show emotion to inspire and lead the Fremen into battle. To me, the point is to show a contrast between who Paul was in the first movie to who he's evolved into in the second one. In DUNE MESSIAH, Paul is different yet again because he's an evolving character.
Was just about to write the same thing.
@@tatitorodriguez376 Yeah, that happens to me a lot. I'm a DUNE fan so I feel I gotta represent when reviewers don't seem to understand the source material.😅
The Freman, Harkonen and House Atreades are decedents of Earthlings but earth itself is a long-ago memory to these people.
Supposedly house Atreades can trace thier roots back to the Romans.
Blah
The scene of Paul speaking in the leader circle was most impactful I've seen in years.
I got pulled out of that scene. I couldn’t take Chalamet seriously. Enjoyed the film overall.
Best scene
That scene hyped me up! Made me want to go into battle too!
His yelling took me out of the movie but I’ve heard people love that scene. I guess it’s gonna split people.
@@themtgdude486i was hater but i thought he killed it. He has really impressed me in this series along with his role in The King. Just my opinion
Arrakis is not earth. It has 2moons, and a white sun.
He messed up, but this is a conplex world.
Our sun is not white?
@@randomanton It is
@iamgar6age not really. It's peak frequency is in the light green/yellow part of the spectrum, even though green is not a visible color in stars
@@brandonhill2183 its white lol....stop looking directly at it.
I have to disagree. I think Timothée Chalamet is just excellent as this character. This is basically how Paul Atreides was written in the books and Chalamet captures his essense very well. He does emote but doesn't oversell, it's just shown in a more subtle way than we are used to in big movies like this. His delivery is on point, more tight and reserved, works great for the character who is this somber messiah type with this "great" path ahead of him. You also kinda omitted that tent scene in the first Dune where he loses it and snaps at Jessica. Just superb acting from them both him and Rebecca Ferguson.
Agree. I'm no big Chalamet fan, but damn he was spot on for Paul.
Wonka is what made me like him. Its easy to makw people root for you in movies directed by genious. Not so.easy to lead a whimsical.musical to 600 million worlwide. I just come back from.warching dune 2. 10 out of 10 and chamalet and bardem.made.the movie for me.
He’s the only character I thought was great.
He did a good job. I just think his physical appearance throws people off haha
I'm not up on all the hot young actors right now, and I know it feels like Chalamet is really overexposed at the moment, but I can't think of anyone in his cohort who'd be more appropriate for Paul. He nails that cerebral introspection, probably better than Kyle McLachlan did in Lynch's Dune. (The guy from the Sci-Fi mini-series wasn't bad, but played Paul too much like a surly teenager for my tastes.)
When Martin said that Arakkis was actually earth in the far future I instantly check whether it's true or not, and apparently, it's not, Arakkis has two moons while earth only has one, what kind of spice that Martin have before this review?😅
I love Martin, but he's dead wrong. The people in the Dune books don't even have any memory of Earth.
Yeah, it would’ve been great if at least one DT reviewer could’ve been familiar with the book to critique the adaptation.
@PerfectTroy1 I think Earth is mentioned in Dune messiah, from what I remember it's a long abandoned world
Terra (Earth) was hit by a meteor and completely destroyed.
Ceres became the imperial planet/moon
Yes, Earth is pretty much dying/dead during this time. Dune takes place 20,000 years in the future or 10,191 AG (After Guild)
You can tell a story without much dialogue e.g. 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It’s called visual storytelling.
100% agree. Tons of visual storytelling was happening in both Dune Part 1 and 2
Agreed. They made far too much of Denis’ comment. It’s actually very common for great directors/filmmakers/screenwriters to hold this view. In fact it is the orthodoxy. “Plenty of white on the page”, (lack of dialogue) is the secret to a functioning movie screenplay. That goes for thrillers, action movies, dramas…. ‘Show don’t tell’, etc….
To say "you can tell a movie without much dialogue" is drastically different than saying "I hate dialogue. Dialogue is for television..."... DV's comment is kind of ignorant imho.
@@Tomurow ‘Show don’t tell’ doesn't mean "don't use dialogue". In fact, dialogue uses that by having subtext. DV's comment was ignorant. Doesn't mean he ain't talented, he's just flat wrong about dialogue; it's important to storytelling.
@@karn6213 Hi, yes, agreed. I hope I was trying to say that I don't believe there was necessarily anything controversial about what he said, objectively speaking - just the way that he said it. And I was making assumptions to a degree, about his comments generally.
I have been a contracted as a 'punch up' dialogue writer in film and have a degree in Screenwriting (for what it's worth) so am looking at things from that perspective. I love good dialogue and great TV as much as the next guy but know that there are still distinct differences in scene construction between these two mediums, with a variety of factors impinging on the way these productions are written... Even the high-end, 'filmic' TV these days... And yes, television-style writing has informed modern filmmaking to quite a significant degree. So I think it's fine to voice an artistic preference. He's obviously a film director for a reason.
👍
I never really felt the chemistry between Paul and Chani in the book, so the movie was an improvement.
I can totally feel this, but I do think to a degree that's by design in the book. Imagine you had a dream that took place a few years in the future where you were head over heels in love with a beautiful girl and then the very next day that girl popped into your life. Would you really need much wooing or chemistry, or would you just kind of let it fall into place? Now imagine if on top of that you were also immersed in a hard, insular, violent culture poised on the brink of total galactic war and that beautiful girl was your only life raft.
At the end of the day Frank Herbert's characters don't exactly have the most colorful interior lives where emotion is concerned so I look forward to seeing Paul and Chani find their love on the big screen.
I didn’t feel anything between them in this film either but it didn’t take away too much from the experience. I just didn’t buy that they were in love.
I didn't feel it here dude, this is the driest couple I've ever seen
@@cesarcampos8746 Agreed. Otherwise great film though. Those two leads just didn’t work for me.
@@cesarcampos8746 They should have used more spit. It's an honor.
To be honest the story is basic, but because the world building is done so well it draws you in.
I both agree and disagree with you. The story of Dune itself is a pretty simple and generic journey that's true.
But as a jumping off point for all six books it's very original and amazing. The "point" of the entire series and inspiration behind the books doesn't even kick off until the second book.
@@lukaszzylik4437 To be fair I haven't read the books, I've only seen these two movies.
@@jean-pierre5221 oh yeah completely understandable
The journey is generic at the surface but it goes in a unique and thematically rich direction that no other take on this journey really achieved. Plus, most of the other takes on this type of journey are largely influenced by that original book.
Thats kind of how star wars and many other space based sci fi stories work. For example, Avatar has so much attention to detail in how Pandora's environment and ecosystem works, and the sound and visual experiences are so immersive that sometimes you just want to admire the sights and sounds in the background and the story and characters almost feels like a distraction.
Martin acting like he read the books, this is not earth, just in the future. and Greig Fraser did the cinematography for this as well as the previous film. get your facts right people.
Preach!
Stop hating. They didn't like those aspects. It's not perfect. The villains are forgettable and just yell, and the action needed to be longer. Ppl overhyped this

Just a small correction. Arrakis is definitely not earth within the Dune cannon. It's supposed to be smaller, have two moons, a different type of sun, etc.
That shit ruined the whole review for me. Bruh said it so confidently 🤦🏾♂️
I disagree with the House of Harkonnen criticism. They were the villains who had the most story to tell. Butler is given very little and turns it into magic. Bautista is made to look like a complete b*tch which was the point to forward the story and elevated Austin Butler’s character. Their panic and ruthlessness took me back to the iconic villains of the 80s.
Yeah but they all just come off one note. They grunt, get angry, yell, and kill ppl
Butler was damn good in the role!
I dont agree with corey and martin about the story lacking. Its very deep with alot of hidden agendas, the dialog was also very good in the movie. Dont know what theyre looking for exactly. Theyre trying to criticize it yet they still give it full price which is a little contradictory on their part.

It’s Earth in the future?! Come on Martin! It’s literally set in outer space in the distant future. You shouldn’t need to read the book to get the basic context of the story. 🙄
Dune Arrakis isn't Earth. They left Earth long ago after ruining it and don't even remember it.
It's a complicated world, it's like cramming for an exam so of course martin will miss something after reading.
The planet in Dune is Arakis earth has long been gone
Dune is a difficult one to critique, especially with a good knowledge of the books. For a story so deeply about humanity, you can honestly say that characterisation isn’t really the point of the novel. That’s not an apology, more of an explanation. The movie actually well-realises the detachment of Paul but for general audiences it must seem like the story is missing the conventional tropes that they’re used to. You can’t blame people for feeling that there is a lack of character, particularly with the villains - but at the same time what makes this story unique is the way humans are portrayed after hundreds of thousands of years of into the future - basically , they’re different. People have evolved to extremes, especially those whacky Harkonnens!
WFT is Martin talking about ?
Lol. How many comments will it take to convince Martin that Arrakis isn't Earth? Message received folks.😂
Finally someone said it !
The stoic, monotone, almost robotic personalities are intentional. That’s just how they are in this universe.
Exactly, especially in the case of Paul. He was trained in Bene Geserrit ways by his mother which was touched on in the first movie. That entire “hand in the box” test was all about whether he could control his instincts in the face of terrible pain. The Bene Gesserit are all about controlling everything, from emotions down to the very cells in your body. A lot of women in this universe has this kind of training in varying degrees because the Bene Gesserit are the silent, in the shadows rulers of this universe. Also not really touched on in the movies is Paul also Mentat training (like that guy Thufir in the first movie). The basically means he can compute a lot of information at great speed like a human supercomputer. Combine that with Paul basically being a teenager at the time this is going on, Chalamet’s portrayal is pretty spot on.
The point still stands tho. Doesn't matter if it was on purpose, it's still not engaging either way.
Was plenty engaging to me@@sahityabk
Spoilers for the movie and Paul’s character growth:
One interesting thing I noticed with the designs of the characters is the more alien a character looks, take all of House Harkonan for example, the less compassion they have. It’s like all their humanity was stripped away in pursuit of power, victory, and decadence. Same goes for Paul, who is the most human-looking noble in the movie and his relationship with Zendaya’s character shows his compassionate side.
Yet as soon as his eyes turned blue, that compassion in him gave way for vengeance, power, and victory.
Just an interesting thing I noticed, how the characters who are or become warmongers in this movie also become less human and more alien. Maybe that’s why the sci-fi here works, because in a way, it reflects the darkest parts of humanity.
when there’s too much dialogue with a ton nuance and complexity it goes over his head but when there’s not enough of it he complains lol
and what Denis was saying is that now there’s too much over reliance on expository dialogue instead of letting whats happening tell the story, and he’s 1000% right
I can see where he’s coming from when you put in that way, he could’ve probably worded better though.
@@gcolbyp probably language barrier, and i haven’t seen the interview so not sure if he said it jokingly or not but still

Funnily enough Timothee Chalamet sort of plays a cannibal in Dune too. The Fremen drink the water of the dead.
Its kind of hilarious how nerdy all of them are, but they are 100% not SCI FI nerds.

Wouldn't go that far😅
I think what Denis is saying that ‘character is revealed through action’ rather than ‘story/dialogue doesn’t matter’ as Korey intimates. Screenwriters will often repeat this as a mantra.
Denis probably could’ve worded it better though
@@gcolbypYeah, agreed! I commented because years ago I did a degree in Screenwriting - not that that really means anything!😂 but you get taught that dialogue is not always a great thing in cinema. Obviously, Tarantino came along and for a time dialogue was the in thing and audiences had a perception that people talking was ‘great writing’ - but generally, the orthodoxy is let the character’s responses to situations tell the story. Denis is definitely from this school and also happens to be a great visualist.
I feel like this issue comes about also in a lot of anime reviewers. For example, jujitsu Kaisen had a recent season where there was a lot of fighting, and the knee-jerk response was that there is no story even though the story is told without lots of exposition and people complain when any exposition is used, but get confused when there is none since they don’t know how the characters or how their powers are working. They don’t know why everyone’s doing what they’re doing even though it’s told to them in the pot is major responded as very simple to this because they make the bare bones assumption that everyone is doing one thing the guy, bad guy and the story it’s really more than that, and if you say this, they complain and say you overcomplicate things or it’s just a dumb action series you can’t win. plus complexity does not mean a simple story can be good a convoluted one can be good, etc. people act like it needs to be convoluted to be good sometimes or complex someone’s complex other persons convoluted
Dialogue is action. You can attack with dialogue, you can retreate with dialogue, you can manipulate with dialogue... Dialogue is action, at least the good ones.

Eh, my gut says that Arrakis is very much not Earth in the future.
It’s not. Earth is remembered as an ancient land in the books. But I’m not sure if people live there anymore or not
I loved the Harkonnen. It was almost comedic with how ridiculous they are, and I found myself laughing.
Terra (Earth). Died long, long ago in this story. Also who could forget the opening to 2001 A Space Odyssey? Visual storytelling is a thing, an amazing thing.
I dont get them saying Dune Part one had no story... wtf. They traveled to Arrakis, Paul's family was basically erased, we learned about the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, Harkonens and Fremen. I loved Dune Part 2 as well, saw it Sunday. The women hating youtube channels are looking for a reason to hate on Zendaya. I dont get it. I dont think she was the best in this film but by no means was she bad. I mean the bar here is super high. My biggest critique is yhat they cut too many characters and there were weird cuts in parts. Still, this film was an incredible achievement and should be seen by anyone who loves film. I hope it makes over a Billion.
I agree! I feel like everyone saying part 1 has no story needs to rewatch it. I definitely had to see it twice cuz the first time I was too busy taking in the visuals but also trying to make sense of the cultures and the language. There's just so much to it. I feel like it's a situation where the "story" can go over people's heads. Plus the movie is a slowburn and ends before the story is finished. I think that also contributes to it.
Part 1 wasn’t a traditional story. It’s like if Star Wars Episode 4 ended after Luke and Ben went with Han

23:30 just think, Paul is the son is the Duke , the inheritor you the throne of his planet, he would've been taught to be reserved and stoic. He was trained as a mental, which is makes his brain akin to a computer. He also was being trained as a Bene Gesserit by his mother Lady Jessica. Bene Gesserit train to detach from emotion and reflexive instinct as it's seen as animal like. I found his performance to reflect these things, Timothy performed wonderfully as Paul.

The Harkonnen were kind of goofily evil in the book too, but there was definitely a sort of panache and gregariousness about their villainy that they made them enjoyable to read. It's like, hey man, at least they enjoy a good time, no matter how demented it might be. Not seen the new film yet, and I'm really looking forward to it, but I have to admit I did miss the scheming pantomine fun of the novel's Baron Harkonnnen which was sadly absent in the first film.

It's easier to get lost in it then, for me at least. Sort of like an historical reenactment documentary on the history channel haha, just needs experts talking over it 😂
They just dont understand dune
Time to go see it in theater. Thanks for heads up, guys. Much love ❤
In a feudal world/universe ruled by monarchs and despots, the vast majority you know like 99% of their inhabitants are mere subjects. That is why very few individuals stand out except for the strongest, vilest or most noble of the lords and leaders. The Fremen were an exception to this because their social order save for the reverend mother and some "elders" was pretty much meritocratic. Thus there would be more characters to stand out as individuals.
Commenting that the Harkonnens were pretty much flat except for the shouting Raban, scheming Baron and menacing Feyd-Rautha is about as clueless as it gets.
Was waiting for this
Do they not have access to Dolby Cinema theaters? It's the best way to watch the film.
The screening for critics in austin are scheduled in a very crappy theater. Then hollywood wonders why people prefers watchin at home, plus views on movie content are going down.double toasted crew is hard working thats why they still can manage to get some income on movue reviews but grace randolph with almost a milliom subscribers should be doing better.
You guys needed Quinn to help y'all understand all of this.
Shout out to Quinn's Ideas.
Its the gut who explains the books? I have been avoiding becuase i dont want spilers of messiah
I love doubletoasted!
Martin need to pay attention to dialogue in the movie. Dune is not about future Earth. The 80s version explained too.
He made a mistake by what he took.from reading the book. Something people should do more
@@parareefaelias656 He didn't read the book. In the book it explains the history of the galaxy and universe. History of Earth and humans exploring and leaving in first few chapters
@@christopherprice9593 i know that but its a dense book more complicated than lord of the rings so you will lose track of things espcially if it was a while since you read it. I cant remember most od LORT mythilogy as i read those books long ago.
@@parareefaelias656 Well my opinion if you have a platform. You should research before talking about a topic or movie. People follow and support what these guys say. There opinions, ideas or even misinformation.
Ah man, I sent my friends a text message saying--and I'll get killed for this probably--that Avatar and Dune are the same movie, and one is made for people who like fairies and Disney and the other is made for fans of Star Trek and H.R. Geiger.
You wont get killed. I think way of water and dune are maaterpieces but not for young audiences
just came out of the movie and I can listen to my fellow fine-aged gentlemen talk about it
There is a decent amount of dialogue here. I think Denis just has it in the lower totem pole.
Little dialogue is better than bad dialogue. Im with Dennis. For dialogue i prefer books. Not much time to eatch tv, i rather watch youtube.
Im surprised no one had ever seen The King. Thats his best imo
Maybe superhero movies and Tyler Perry movies are more your speed
didnt the crew give unanimous full prices? And they praised a lot of elements of this movie. Korey is watching it again
