  • I ride the Harley Davidson LiveWire to GRIDSERVE; the world’s first electric vehicle charging forecourt based in Braintree, in the UK.
    The site opened in December 2020 and is fully kitted out with super fast chargers, Tesla charging points, a chill out area and solar panels everywhere to create a carbon net zero site.
    I’m confident that today I’ve seen the future solution to electric vehicle (both car and motorcycle) charging!
    The future of the EV charger network- I hope!

    Hi , a reminder of the first self service petrol fore courts in the 70,s . paid my mortgage off working on those and built my own house out of it . How time goes by . The future belongs to the youth and the professor who has helped Costa and others ,by grinding the beans ,not so fine ,reducing the weight needed and getting to same result , it is a bit like the first age of flight , it will all come together and no noxious fumes we hope .Happy to see you chilled out and a charge point that works , after a good nights sleep . Your style enthusiasm and passion is infectious the steadying hand and giggles in the back ground . Never to be undersold . Thanks for the video .

    Great concept and this type of business will help electric grow. HOWEVER, here in Ontario we have a similar concept on the 401 called Onroute. You can get gas, food coffee, bathroom , etc. No electrons yet as far as I know. The problem is that they are always busy with massive lines and they are usually dirty despite best efforts to keep them clean; I usually can't wait to get out of them. If everyone has an electric vehicle and must wait 1 hour to charge, these stations could potentially have the same issues. There would have to be a lot of them and/or they will have to be massive. Would they replace every gas station? Not trying to be at downer, but when there are 3 cars and 1 bike, the place is great. Add a queue for the chargers and then see how nice it will be. This is a great step and building infrastructure like this is needed.

    • @FreddieDobbs

      Agreed- it was a bit of a false reality being so empty. In the UK, they're usually filthy places that people are desperate to leave too!😆 We're still a gigantic distance away from being ready. It'll be a very interesting next five years or so!

This station really is impressive and like you I think the future looks brighter now rather than my thoughts when you collected the bike. Cool video again Freddie! Nicely done. What I don't really get is why the Livewire takes so long to charge with such a limited capacity in terms of KWh (vs cars with 4 - 5x the capacity). I would assume that rapid charging times of 5-10 min would be the primary upside of having a relative small battery on board an electric bike

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! I can't figure out why the LiveWire takes the same amount of time to charge as a car either- I'm still puzzled by it.

    • @amundalfredsen3479
      @amundalfredsen3479 Před 3 lety +1

      The size of the battery dictates how fast it is able to charge. If I’m not mistaken the LiveWire can handle 13 kW of fast charge, so no point in plugging in to 150 kW. I really like the bike, but the fast charging have to be faster.

    mmm we don't all have hours in a day to waste sitting about waiting for a charge. Until we can charge these things within a few minutes, same as we fill up cars and bikes with petrol and diesel, then this electrifiction is idealistic at best and a white elephant at worst.. we will see..and i should add that i am really enjoying going through your videos from the start after having found reviewing a couple of bikes i was interested in.. top job..

  • @alexmorgan3435
    @alexmorgan3435 Před 2 lety +4

    Nice one. Of course they have got you captive for 45-60 minutes minimum as your bike/vehicle re-charges, coffees, food, lifestyle products to buy. On a bike you are not going to be able to carry that much but in a huge 4x4 you could be tempted to fill it with all sorts of crap. For me re-charging times need to come down massively to 10-15 minutes absolute max. 45 minutes is still far too long to be stuck in a place which is basically like an airport or hospital. What if it is not nice weather outside and you are stuck there waiting for your vehicle to charge with snotty screaming kids around you? An F1 car can get a new set of tyres and a full tank of fuel in less than 8 seconds. Time is money or in this case stopping you from getting on with your life.

    The lack of charging points, still 2 years later (2023), an hour to charge up fully and the elephant in the room with ALL EV's is the longevity of the battery after X charges.
    How does your phone compare to when you first got it after year 1, year 2 and so on......
    I'm all for EV bikes but we are way off it being a real alt to fossil fuels.

    Just done bit of research a bank of 4 fast chargers consume about the same as100 to 230 homes. The solar canopy cannot power the fast chargers and relies on the main grid. So it's a bit of a con. Great idea but all that electric power has to come from somewhere else.

    I quite like the idea of leccy vehicles, cause breathing in the shit from someone’s exhaust every morning ain’t nice. As long as I can still buy petrol for my zzr1100 in 20yrs time and the classic vehicle market is kept intact I think it’s a good thing.
    Whether leccy vehicles actually create less carbon given the processes to make the battery’s and the source of charge for them may come from carbon producing power stations is a good talking point. They do create less carcinogenic particulates in built up metropolitan areas.

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  Před 3 lety
