$2600 vinyl wrap vs $500 DIY Plasti dip kit. Is the wrap worth the cost?
We bought two identical 350Zs and have been modifying them to be FUN, daily drivers that you can take to the track. James Pumphrey and Zach Jobe are on Team Hi, and their car gets the expensive parts. Nolan Sykes and Aaron Parker are on team Low. Their car gets the cheap ones.
Then we test them to see which components are actually worth spending the money on.
If you want to “paint” or change the color of your car, you basically have three options- A traditional paint job, a vinyl wrap, or plastidip. The gloss of a paint job is intoxicating, but a perfect paint job like that is not only ridonkulously expensive, but it takes forever. There is so much prep work involved with a paint job like!
So Hi Team is taking the happy medium route: they're getting Hi Car professionally vinyl wrapped. $2600 bucks. A quality wrap job is the best of every world. Hardly any prep work. It only takes a few days to get one done, though if you’re doing it yourself, put your patience-pants on.
It protects your paint --if it’s worth protecting, it’s totally reversible --for when you change your mind, and you can have any sort of graphic screen printed onto a vinyl wrap.
Team Low will be plastidipping their car by hand. Plasti dip offers many of the same benefits as vinyl-wrapping, but for a fraction of the price. We bought this plasti dip kit from “dip your car” for $500. It is California compliant, so that might make it worse. But on the bright side, it is relatively easy to do yourself (or so Nolan thought), there’s very little prep work, it’s totally reversible, and it’s easy to fix damage or mistakes. The only downsides are that it’s never going to look like a great paint job, it’s not that durable, and Team Low has to do it themselves

And that's why you should be careful with a gas pressure washer. You only want about 1500psi and as much GPM as you can get for washing a car.

Hahaha good one, but honestly tho. How many people out of 100 have plasti-dipped a car properly.. id say about 1 out of 100, so yes its funny but id say almost eveyone would struggle with that. Because almost everyone, has never done that! Im sure you love Nolan. I do too, but just sparking conversation. My point is the fact that anybody that is a veteran plasti-dipper is not someone id like to have a beer with, unless its there undesired job.
K Stu it’s every episode though, it’s kind of the tone of the whole thing. Yeah it’s funny but this episode was the epitome of that. They could have compared having both done professionally if it was meant to be a true comparison instead the whole episode was about how Nolan struggled and how funny it was.

im pretty sure the plasti dip channel literally has like 100 videos on how to plasti dip with a spray gun at home, they did it like completely wrong its super simple to do they just didnt search how to do it. plasti dip isnt like sprain paint you, dont do light layers you do good full coverage over lapping layers not too thick stay about a foot and a half back if i remember

They also laid it on SUPER thick for the first coat. You're barely supposed to know it's there on the first coat. A good plastidip is usually 5 coats with 30 minutes between each coat depending on ambient temperature. I'm currently plastidipping my car piece by piece and it's coming out really respectable
Being a Plasti dip expert probably isn't the fit you're looking for

@@bernlin2000 as someone who was a car and van paint apprentice i can tell you, it isn't easy and talent will only get you so far. To do a really good job its worth paying a guy that has the years of experience already lol.
I did my fender flares on my Tacoma and it took me close to 10 coats because I was applying it so sparingly in order to avoid what they went through lol.
@@bernlin2000 so I rattle canned my entire miata with plastidip and even included a stencil (wouldnt recomend the stencil route). Your first two coats being barely there is just a matter of pulling back the can further away and "dusting" the surface. Same principle with a paint gun. That allows the plastidip to adhere in a more uniform way on the surface. Helps to practice on one area before moving to the rest of the car. Learned the hard way but honestly who cares, were not all experts right off the bat despite what the internet might have you believe.

I saw a civic covered in flex seal. It was really bumpy, like sandpaper and plastidip had a baby, but it was really funny and interesting cuz it was just his clapped out beater car

@@viktor_v-ughnda_vaudville_476 It can be done with a rattle can if you take your time. My father and I rattle canned a VW Beetle. When it was done people thought we actually used a professional spray booth. Color sand every couple coats. Doesnt work with Plasti-Dip, though

Painted my car like that. Granted I was a bit unconventional in my choice of style of paint and it could’ve been done a bit better but I am still happy with it. Plus I am working a minimum wage job so it helped me not die financially

My repaint on my 88 rx7 took 2 months of mud work and 3 months of paint, reassembly, buffing and final inspection, not a concourse job but definitely show quality. Oh year im a 18 year veteran collision tech. It took longer to machine strip the 6 paint jobs off to bare metal. No major accidents and all original steel but its seen some damage over the years. 3rd owner. Have entire history and all service records since 91.

The spray gun you used had a lot to do with it too! I work at Home Depot and we sell those there. People always return them complaining about how they don’t spray well and sometimes just spit out the paint.

They're made for two different markets, the whole concept of plastidipping is that you can change the look and color of your car in your garage/driveway. It's a lot easier to do than vinyl wrapping, where a professional installation is basically a requirement.

I plasti dipped the hood roof and trunk of a Toyota Corolla and it turned out amazing. I honestly think using the rattle cans is better. It’s way longer but the result is great.
