Rusty West
June 2022
Hi Rusty, great analysis of Chase’s disappearance. My heart goes out to his friends, family and everyone that participated in finding him. I grew up on Oahu and would hike this particular hike every now and then. It’s very hot with pretty much no shade. Towards the top of the mountain, there are unofficial trails that lead to the ocean down below. There are a few swimming pools in the reef. And it’s not uncommon for the ones that know about them to take a dip and cool off. It’s sketchy. As the water comes, the pools fill, and quickly exits. You have to hold onto the reef to keep your balance. Depending on the time of year, if the waves were too big, it could be dangerous and the tides could pull you right out. But him leaving his backpack at the top on the trail is something you would never do. It’s too far away from the pools. That’s what makes his disappearance weird.
He probably wanted to take a daring selfie and fell tumbling down to the ocean.
The fact his phone was not in his backpack tends to support this.
You fall in that vast open ocean, it’s not surprising if you’re never found. Happens all the time.
It’s always great to see a new Rusty West video!
Gotta love that "Hello folks!" Thanks for shining light on this case.
Awww...just when I thought my Thursday evening was going to go south, Rusty checked in. He's always good for a spine-tingling tale..
Thank you or "Mahalo" Rusty for covering this case. I grew up not far from this area. One thing I know is that the lava cliffs you see are very unstable and quite different from any other rock to walk on. Chase may have gone to an area near the cliff to get one of those "interesting" selfies. Sadly, this may be the likely scenario. He may have washed into one of the many lava tubes & caves along the shoreline. I hope that he is found soon. Another two cases of missing young men in Hawaii that may fall into the "unusual " category are Daylenn Moke Pua 18 from the Big Island who disappeared in 2015 while hiking another Oahu trail; the Haiku Stairs. The Haiku Stairs will be removed according to a vote by the City Council.. They were built by the Navy during WWII, & many people get lost & injured in that area. The other is Samuel Martinez 23, who vanished while hiking in Kokee State Park, Kauai. He was last seen there May 14th. His backpack was also found later by a Hunter in October. Later in (January)? 2022 some of his belongings were found by a stream, leading authorities to believe he may have fallen in. Sadly Samuel still remains missing.
Erin gemini ~ Aloha kakahiaka! I think u r rite bruddah , tourists don’t know bout lava tubes & not turning ur back to the ocean . Born & raised Big Island ( 4th generation) so we learn that early ! Mahalos
Maholo is thank you

@@SoloHiker1 Hello?
just goes to show no matter how much of a paradise you live in the laws of reality are always at play
That area appears to have easy access and good visibility with few places for a body to be and not be found. It is likely he fell off the cliff surrounding the area and into the ocean. The ocean is a place where if a body ends up, the odds of it being found are very low.
I agree. He probably lost his footing by the cliff and fell into the ocean.
I agree. It looks like the least likely place I've seen to not be found. It seems there's a good chance he's in the ocean.
Thank you for another thoughtful, well-researched case study. My thoughts and prayers go out to Chase’s loved ones.
Rusty, you're the best. Hope Chase's case is solved. Your telling his story may help. Thank you.
Great Story, Mahalo for sharing. Hopefully they find him, for closure for his family.
Thank you Rusty for bringing this to us. I’m now praying for him and his family 🙏
Based on the fact that Chase is a local, is an experienced hiker and had hiked this trail many times, it’s logical to me that he felt very comfortable to go “ off trail” in order to take a selfie , slipped and fell off the cliffs into the ocean. That would explain why only his cell phone was missing. So sad
Then eaten by a shark

Welcome back, Rusty. The view on these photos is really beautiful. Thank you for sharing this information with us. I always welcome your videos.
This is another sad case of a young man who disappeared. It is always tragic when these people disappear and haven’t been found even though the majority of them are experienced hikers. Could it be that Chase might have fallen into the ocean? Maybe he got too close to the edge of a cliff and fell into the water……just saying. I can’t even imagine what Chase’s family is going through. I hope he is found alive or deceased so the family can have some closure. Very sad indeed being so young. Prayers and thoughts are with Chase and his family.
Hi Rusty~~ Thank you for the video. Keep walking your soul path. Keep reporting the facts. Hopefully he will be found. 🙌🏻✨🙌🏻
Hey Rusty,Long time, not a good feeling on this one those volcanic tubes below surface are more dangerous then pissing in a hornets nest! Hope it all works out for the boy but man I don't know!?. Nice hearing you brother.Keep on truckin!
Thanks Rusty 👋🏼
Interesting case.
Seems very plausible and logical that Chase accidentally slipped and fell into the water. His phone undoubtedly still in his pocket or at the bottom of the sea 😢😞

Chase sounds like a kind of young man who knew what he was doing and knew the. Hike well. This is why it's Strange indeed very strange

Have they used Tracker Dogs??? Where was his back pack found????

So glad to hear from you again, Rusty. A good, careful, thoughtful and thorough job as always. Take care, bro. Pat in New Jersey
Off trail. For sure. Ever drive on public roads and interstates ? Does anyone obey any laws, ever . Seriously. So, off trail, given , yes. Thanks rusty , you are the best narrator I ever tuned into. Yup, rusty a natural talent. Simple math I reply. Always enjoy your background music selections. Very well done. Thx .
U high or sum shit?
Yes, I think he went off trail somewhere for a selfie and he fell into a place that is not accessible.
Glad you are back, definitely missed your voice….
Hey Rusty!!! Welcome back!! Good to hear from you!
Great coverage as always Rusty !!!! Love all of your work ! Keep them coming my YT friend !
Wonder if a huge wind gust toppled him. My son walks to our lighthouse but it's not very high. It's likely though a drone or plane would have seen him if he got blown off the cliff.
It’s a very busy trail, we were there 3 yrs ago, it’s hot, really no shade. Very easy to leave trail and no one to keep you from it. Lots of people taking chances to get better pictures.
Also if he was in a bad state of mind and not letting it show, definitely a place to disappear
If it's such a busy trail, then I would think someone would have nothing him , hmmm
OH what a fine young man to lose. I hope that he is somewhere alive and well. I, too, wonder about foul play. But what for? Ransom doesn't seem to be involved. UAP(UFO)Abducted? Who knows. One would think that someone saw something. My heart aches over this. J
Is that just rocky terrain or old lava beds. If lava beds and he left the trail he could have stepped on a spot and fell into a lava tub. Scary
Excellent reporting Rusty.
Thank you for taking the time to upload.
I've hiked the trail. It's well marked and paved (as you see) on certain parts. There's not much shade so it can get hot and there is no water source on the trail that I can remember. My guess is he went off-trail to a drop-off and fell into the sea with no place to climb out. That would be a death sentence.
Thanks Rusty.... always love watching your videos. top notch every time. catch you on the next one.
Thank you Rusty for your work. The area looked pretty treacherous, but his backpack being left, is strange. I feel bad for him, and his family.
Hello Rusty! Thanks for posting a new video!
Thank you for your video...I do hope the family finds answers soon.
I find it odd that his backpack was abandoned.
You do a great job with your content. Thank you.
Thanks for the video
Thank You Rusty !
I really need a update on this case. This is my class mate, and we graduated together. We had classes together, and we where in the same academy. It was hard not to notice this guy. It feels weird not knowing what happened to him…
Also, a update on how chase was as a person. He was a very loving, and loud person. A class clown is the best I would describe him as. Again, that’s why it’s weird that this case just went dead..it’s really hard to miss this guy. He had a lot of good friends, and family. It’s hard to get lost on this trail, especially with it being a VERY popular trail for tourist and locals. So it’s very, very strange that he just…vanished.
To me there are only two possibilities: he commited suicide because obviously it was unusual for him not to be close for his brother's event, you can't look in others heads... Or he was looking for a nice spot on a rock/top of the cliffs with a great view to make a selfie or start a video call with his brother/family and had a terrible accident, falling down the rocks. So sad, I hope this case gets solved to give closure for family and friends!
I was thinking similar with the exception of suicide. Since only his phone is missing, it sounds like he went off trail to take a photo of something (or himself) and had an accident. Such a shame but many people these days seem to think a good selfie is worth taking the risk.
There are more than just two possibilities and third possibility is taken! Many people are taken!

It's was a well traveled trail when I was there. You would be hard pressed to get lost. It's a narrow peak with only one paved trail up. There are several unofficial dirt trails and a hike down to some massive tide pools. The Dragon's Nostril (blow holes) is down there as well. If you were daring and goin off trail the fall potential is high and it would likely be fatal. Getting lost is not possible.
The ocean is very tumultuous in that area. Perhaps something happened after he left.
His body could have been swept away. Heartrending. His poor family.
@@obelus5985 Yeah I wondered that too. Sad indeed. 💔
yeah its probably the ocean. usually its a whole forest surrounding them

If the dogs didn't strike a trail off the main path, he never left it. My guess is alien abduction.

Very mysterious case. The area he went missing doesn't actually appear to be that big. Certainly big enough to go missing but much smaller than the areas we are used to seeing. Hope he is found soon. This is a baffling one
the area is surrounded by ocean though, meaning its potentially a substantially larger area than typical in a missing persons case
The idea that wind could've had something to do with it isn't far from a possibility. There is a video/movie called "Rainbow Bridge" about Jimi Hendrix and the concert in Hawaii. It has some footage of some major gusts of wind that make it look like people could fly if they wanted to. It also has some premonitions of death that would become reality that year.
Chase must of removed his backpack for a reason. Wish we knew where it was located?? If near the cliffs it may have been Chase dropped his phone over one of these sections of cliffs accidently. He removed his backpack to climb down to recover then, once recovered, tried to climb back up?? Maybe losing his footing and falling into the ocean?? Or maybe he climbed down onto cliffs to take a selfie and lost his footing falling into ocean?? Since no sign of him any where on ground im betting he's in the ocean sadly along with his phone. So young. RIP Chase. Thanks Rusty on another good mystery.
I can't find all your videos, I know there were more that this, I was trying to share them with my daughter and I can only see a few on your front page. Take care
The question is: Why put your backpack down? Two possible answers. 1. He had to go to the bathroom. 2. He knew of, saw, or heard, a stream, and went to fill an empty water bottle (left the otjer in his pack). As someone who'd done the trail before, it's unlikely that he only had 1 bottle of water with him. [What was on that store receipt from the night before? Were water bottles on there, and if so, how many, and how many were left back at the car, or at home? If it turned out there were 2 missing, then he most likely tried to climb down to a stream.] In either scenario, he either became disoriented and lost, or injured and unable to walk, or call for help (i.e. sustained a head injury). If he was just lost, he'd have headed to where he'd have cell service - so uphill - and could have become injured along the way due to the steep terrain. There's also a chance that he encountered a bear or lion, as they frequent watering holes, and he was injured or run off, away from the trail. Therefore, I believe that he'll be found within a mile or 2 from the backpack, headed away from the trail, from the side that his pack was found on. I wish they'd have kept up the official search for at least a week. I thought that 7-10 days was standard? 3 seems ridiculously short. As a young man, he could've survived a couple of weeks, if he could find water. I hope everyone out there will say a prayer that he'll be found for his family. And, please. If you or someone you love hikes PLEASE get a Personal Locator Beacon! There's no excuse. They're very affordable now. I also think that everyone venturing into the forest or remote areas, should (in addition to extra water and snacks) carry a good knife, lighters, fire starter (like cotton balls dipped in Vaseline), a couple of heavy duty trash bags (shelter, dry place to sit, rain poncho), duct tape, and a whistle, and be armed. Whether the danger be animal or human, having a negative encounter is always a possibility. A gn can also help you signal for help and get food.
his back pack was found on the top part of the trail near the lighthouse. And a personal locator beacon is a great idea.. and if he had one.. he would have probably carried it in his backpack.. where it still would be. The trail is not a very long one either, its about 2 1/2 miles and most of it is paved and has a lot of foot traffic .. so what happened must have prevented him from screaming for help.. as some one would have easily heard it. I think we all agree.. he is off the trail and with in range of the backpack. I think we can easily rule out aliens or a lurking bigfoot.. and a armed sex perp is unlikely.. the only thing I am unsure is how good the cell signals are as they could ping his cell and see what area it might be in.. as if he is dead.. his cell would still work.
I live on Oahu. There are no bears or lions lmao. This is one of the easiest hikes on the island; it is not a forest or a remote area. To address your point about bringing just one bottle of water, sometimes I don't even bring any water. The trail is very short and easy so I will leave my water in my car. It is basically a paved open road that's winds up and around a mountain. I have hiked down to the tide pools and this is where it gets dangerous. Im assuming he tried to go down there and got swept away.
very strange
Also man pictures are so pretty
Been there many times. Almost impossible to get lost. A person gotta be real careless to fall down the cliffside but it's possible. Almost impossible to die anywhere around that lookout as there are no forests, crevasses, wild animals, and tons of tourists. A persons body would be real easy to locate, unless he fell in the ocean!
Hello Rusty! Hello Folks! 😊
🤔🤔Hey rusty it's possible that chase ingalls may have gotten lost or was possibly injured while hiking in the area hopefully he will be found very soon thanks for posting!!!!

😭 justice for chase. Today is June 13th an no info ony
It does seem like this poor young man may have accidentally fallen into the ocean below. 😢
Sounds like he slipped off a cliff into the ocean while taking a selfie.
You don't just abandon your pack no way. Sit it down and walk around the immediate area but not far sure. He's supposed to be experienced he would practice those basic rules.

@@star_gazer2967 huh?
Creepy
It said he was an avid hiker, so he would not have been bothered by the elevation or heat. I would be curious where it was found as is it near a cliff where he could of slipped and fell from? This is why it is so important for people going off grid to carry with them a personal locator beacon!!! You can also use recco tape for clothing, backpacks, etc. I would be putting this on a child as well were they couldn't pull it off since so many seem to just disappear from their parents sight. They should more closely around the edges near the ocean in case he did just lose his footing maybe trying to take a picture with his phone. That would explain why it was missing and why his backpack would be on the ground. I feel so bad for his parents and other loved ones being thrown into this living nightmare!
This was a short trail. He had enough water. He probably walked off trail and that was that.
Another tragic case of a lone hiker goes missing. There should be a law passed that if u go hiking in a dangerous area you have to have someone else with u as a backup. I never go hiking alone.
You can still go missing with other people....
We don't need any more nanny state laws. People are capable of assessing risks and making decisions on their own.
yeah because no ones ever taken someone out into the woods to murder them, lets make it a law!
Every one of these disappearances have a logical explanation. Just locate the body and it'll tell the whole story.
Some of these cases he's covered over the years have been solved. They either fell to their deaths or died of natural causes.
potential danger, higher ground, pot...high...high on pot?
Caves? Caverns, lava shoots? Kidnapped? They need surveillance around there. If he wanted to dissappear he would have had money, a new phone and a ride out of there. Was there any big withdrawal from his account before the hike?
