For through holes above half an inch and not too deep, annular cutters are definitely the best option available. On a mill with NC, you can just use circular interpolation to open large hole no problem, but otherwise your options are a holesaw (fine for shallow holes,but a pain for anything much more than a half inch), a boring head (time consuming and kind of finicky), or suffering through driving a, say, 1" drill through the material, which is never pleasant. It's strange they haven't made much of an impact on the market outside of magdrilling applications.
I agree with everything you say. I will say that using blacksmiths drillbits are and seem dangerous when they grab in material but also are time consuming. Got to go up in increments and I haven't the time for that 😅 annular cutters are nice as are hole saws. I use the bosch quick connect ones and are really good. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I was wanting to build a squat rack very similar to the brand VERVE. 75x75x3mm square hollow tubing. I found an annular cutter that is 75mm long and was looking at using that with an arbor adaptor to fit my drill press just for ease of use and speed of drilling. That way I can go straight through both ends. Thoughts?
@@bakedjohnwick4793 my team leader wanted me to build him one too, not same as Verve but something else over here. I said we could do it for sure. The joy with the drill press is you get a lot more extension than a mag drill so if you've got an extension on the annular cutter then it will go all the way through. I think you'd be OK doing it. As long as your drill press has good torque. But remember slowly slowly with plenty of cutting spray will help your cutter last longer. Hope it helps. A mag drill has its uses that a drill press isn’t possible to use. But if your only drilling on small items that can be clamped under a drill press then you don’t need one
Mag drill won't hold onto anything under a certain thickness it's mainly for thick metals 5mm+ I have a Jei mini beast but it only does up to 35mm through 50mm max and I currently need 50mm and 60mm holes but I'm not sure I want to break my new sealey radial pillar drill by over doing it with 60mm annular cutter😂
What's the purpose of that sprung pin in the middle? Is it hard enough to make a center mark to prevent walking of the cutter? If not, did you center drill first? Can hear/see that motor working. Careful loading the motor of your drill press, melted mine using a big ol' step drill in aluminum without even fully stalling it. Hi Alex.K and thank you for watching first of all. The purpose of the spring loaded pin is exactly what you said. So you would centre pop your place where you are drilling and then align that pin with that popped mark. Equally if you wanted to, you could pilot drill the place your wanting to hole saw out but make sure the pilot holes is same or slightly smaller that the pin other wise you won't know exactly where your drilling if its precise work. The motor does sound strained but once you get the cutter cutting just right, the whole process is very easy on the machine and cutter. It's very satisfying when it goes through with any chatter. Probably the machine, the belts may not have been tight enough for the torque required. They work well, however I also like the bosch hole saws too. They're hardcore too

Hi Stan and thanks for your comment. I just went on ebay and put annular cutter adapter in and got one to suit my morse taper of the pillar drill. However I'm unsure what they have for a 3 jaw chuck on there. Worth a look though. Are you sure your drill press has no taper chuck on it ?
Ive just acquired a set of these 12 , 14 ,16 ,18,20,22 mm great for drilling 80x 80 X 3 mm box section but that odd annoying peice gets stuck inside the cutter the spring loaded centre just sometimes struggles to eject the centre after cutting any tips ??
Hi Mark and welcome. Thanks for commenting and watching. So I use a centre finder pin in cutters, not a pilot drill, sure yours will be the same too. I put another spring into give it a bit more pop for when the slug has been cut. Generally a couple of taps with a light hammer normally gets them out. Never had one stuck stuck yet though. Quite simply, id not heard of many or any people using annular cutters in drill presses because they dont have enough torque for the drilling application.

Hi Nick - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Every day is a school day, I'd never come across those cutters. Surely it would be possible to easily convert your new toy to wet drilling. Would it not be worth the effort?
Hi big rodders. Yes your right, the table has a drain hole in place for wet drilling application, however when cutting with some of these hole cutters the swarf flies everywhere and would splash my surrounding area with coolant. So until I get my garage or workshop finished then I'll stick with the spray cutting fluid. The aerosol cutting fluid isn't that bad to be fair. I can get the fluid right to where it is needed with the attached straw. Thanks for watching.
@@everydaywithmenick It would work out far cheaper if you buy some soluble oil and mix it about 15 parts water to 1 part oil. I use it in an Oasis bottle with a 1mm hole in the lid. Works a treat. I drill loads on my pillar drill and radial drill with this method.

Lovely cutters are these, sometimes torn between the Anular cutters and the bosch hole saw but often go with Bosch hole saws as they're sold at the local Screwfix stores here in UK Thank you for commenting 👍

I was about to spend some $$$ on a Mag DRill but after seeing this video changed my mid. Going for the drill press, which is more practical.

Generally a couple of taps with a light hammer normally gets them out. Never had one stuck stuck yet though. That's just my experience. Hope it helps bud 👍
