  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jim Mahoney, Renowned Hollywood Press Agent
    About Harvey's guest:
If you’re a fan of the golden age of Hollywood, this episode of our show is most definitely for you. For over 30 years our guest, Jim Mahoney, was one of Hollywood’s most successful, respected and sought after press agents in show business history.
At the age of 19, he was hired by Howard Strickling, head of publicity at MGM studios, and was assigned to the legendary Clark Gable. In those final years of MGM’s heyday, he also handled publicity for other stars including Debbie Reynolds, Ann Blyth, Howard Keele and Roger Moore.
Then, after a stint with the iconic syndicated newspaper columnist, Harrison Carroll, at the Los Angeles Herald Express, he became a publicist at the prestigious firm of Rogers and Cowan in Hollywood. And after 3 years, he opened his own immensely successful entertainment public relations business, where he acquired the most prestigious list of legendary clients in show business history, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Wagner, Peggy Lee, Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson - and believe me, I’m just scratching the surface.
And when business partner Paul Wasserman joined the firm, they became THE premiere representatives for the greatest music acts of all time, including The Rolling Stones, U2, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Glen Campbell and dozens more. Over the years he developed close friendships with many of his superstar clients, and he worked night and day managing their mercurial and fragile egos, keeping their secrets, suppressing their outrageous and scandalous behaviours, and pulling out all the stops to preserve their all-important public image.
He quickly became an expert not only in communications and media relations, but crisis management.
And NOW he’s written a highly compelling, entertaining and incredibly eye-opening book entitled “Get Mahoney: A Hollywood Insider’s Memoir”, in which he FINALLY tells many of the stories that he’s kept close to the vest all these years. The book provides a unique perspective on the history of Hollywood, and some of its most notorious characters and events. I absolutely loved this book and could not put down until the very last page.

I’m glad that came across in the interview despite Jim’s advanced age. I hope you get his book. It’s really a great read

I could listen to him for hours: old school in the best sense, seen it all, and nothing to prove. A moment I found instructive and fascinating took place when he went to respond to the question whether he had left anything out of the book. There was a fast pause, then he says no. Did I believe it? Not entirely, but it was the smart answer and between the lines (particularly with the little pause), spoke volumes. You gotta tip your hat to a guy like that.

You are very astute. The truth is he left a lot out of the book. He even said so in chapter 1 but obviously he forgot that when I asked that question.

I had a terrible cold when we filmed this interview, so please forgive my excessively nasal voice. But I hope that won’t put you off this conversation with a true Hollywood legend. Jim’s book is a must-read for every Hollywood film buff. What a life and career he’s had!! This interview barely scratches the surface of what’s in his book!

It was a challenging interview for reasons that are likely obvious. But I really appreciate you watching. And I guarantee you will LOVE his book. It’s riveting!

I just discovered Mr. Brownstone (via the Fly by Night interview). This interviewer is one of the very best I've heard in a long time. He knows his subjects and actually prepares for the interviews. Wonderful. One suggestion to Mr. Brownstone. Please adjust your levels properly when mixing (prior to posting), as Mr. Mahoney's volume is 20% below your level. Thank you.

Thank you for your support of our show. We do the very best we can with the audio levels, but because the interviews are done remote on zoom, our ability to adjust the guest’s audio level (and video quality) is somewhat limited. But I promise you we really do try our very best!

Another great interview by Mr. Brownstone. What an interesting guest and sharp as a tack at 93! I just bought his book after seeing this interview, and am totally looking forward to reading it.

He’s actually 95!! So glad you bought the book. It’s truly one of the best Hollywood memoirs I’ve ever read. Please let me know what you thought of the book after you’ve read it.

Ill have whatever he is having. My gosh. Rather sharp for being 95 Very impressed with his background. You did a great job of directing him along in conversation as he was going off track. Well done. You were extremely respectful of him and it showed.

Thank you so much for saying this Terri. This was not an easy interview for several reasons - one of them being that I was suffering from a terrible flu. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Please buy Jim’s book. It’s really fabulous.

Well that comment proves that it’s impossible to please everyone. The vast majority of our viewers love the new wardrobe. A small minority of people don’t like it. Hopefully those people who disapprove of my new onscreen look will forgive me and keep watching anyway. 🙏🙏🙏

Well, so far, Jim Mahoney gets the prize for being the oldest person ever to appear on our show. He’s 95 years young, and his stories about working with Sinatra, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson and dozens more, make his book an absolute must-read!! We barely touched the surface during this interview. I hope our conversation will motivate you to read Jim’s book.

Lucky that you got him from his start at the end of Hollywood system.
They needed people to control these crazy actor types as I always felt knowing how they gave up everything to try to get success to be an actor/actress.
