A prostate biopsy is currently the only way to diagnose prostate cancer. The majority of men will have had a blood test (PSA) and a prostate examination. If either of these two tests are abnormal the next step is to obtain an image of the prostate using an MRI scan. This scan provides an internal map of the prostate and a risk assessment for the presence of prostate cancer. If an abnormality is discovered on the scan, a man will then need to proceed with a biopsy. Biopsies are performed in different ways. At The Prostate Clinic biopsies are carried out using the Artemis/ Profuse tool. This allows accurate targeting of any lesions seen on MRI. All biopsies are performed through the skin, NOT through the bowel. This has the significant advantage of greatly reducing the risk of infection. The procedure is day surgery only and results are usually available with two-three days.

Excellent video. I had a prostate biopsy two weeks ago and this video prepared me in terms of what to expect. Very good advice and a very realistic account of what to expect before and after the procedure.

How long will the pain after prostate biopsy go away? Any chance of permanent damage to the prostate?

Uncommon to have significant pain. Low risk of long term issues with a targeted biopsy

Thanks for the vidoe. If the patient has suprapubic catheterization do you still request a urine analysis from the urine bag?. Also do you give IM antibiotics before the procedure? If yes how long before the procedure?. Thanks again

I always perform this procedure with men asleep. In Australia men are recommended to have a PSA blood test from 50 if they have no family history of prostate cancero

Is it normally for a patient to only get antibiotics during the procedure ?

Yes that’s correct. At the Prostate Clinic men only receive a single dose of antibiotic at the time of the biopsy. 👌🏻
