The following video is a summary to what you can expect prior to a robotic simple prostatectomy. Firstly, this is a treatment choice for men with urinary symptoms related to a massive prostate. Usually prostates up to around 110- 120 cc can be managed by a variety of endoscopic procedures however, beyond that size becomes more challenging and potentially less effective. Robotic simple prostatectomy offers a highly effective minimally invasive alternative to manage huge prostates. Traditionally they would need an open operation with the potential complications associated with this type of surgery. Robotic simple prostatectomy is performed at Pindara Private Hospital using the DaVinci Xi platform. Most men are admitted overnight and discharged on day 1 post op. I had a open simple prostatectomy after going into urinary retention. My prostate was 130gm. After the surgery I had a catheter in for 10 days. After the catheter was removed I was able to wean off of flowmax and able to urinate on my own in normal fashion. I had two occasions when I could not hold my urine which happened while I was asleep and both happened within two weeks of the catheter removal. When the removed prostate tissue was biopsied they discovered Gleason grade 3+3 cancer of which I am on AS. All in all I am very happy with the outcome and feel very grateful with my results.
