  • Lida Barrova was a legendary Czech actress, regarded as one of the most beautiful women of her time. She was one of the most famous and successful Czech actresses to have ever lived.
Her career spanned over 70 years, in the course of which she starred in a whole number of both Czech and German film classics. She even made it into Federico Fellinis I Vitelloni in 1953. But she is perhaps best known for her life off-screen, as one of Czech films most unhappy characters. Lída Baarovás beauty attracted the attention of Joseph Goebbels, and her career - tragically for her - reached its peak in Nazi Germany shortly before World War Two.
She played young girls especially but it is true that in her beauty there was a sort of maturity and spirit. So that meant that she often ended up playing educated women, and playing them well. She really had lashings of charm and received a lot of offers from foreign studios. One that she turned down, which she regretted for the rest of her life, was from MGM. She always said afterwards that if she had taken it, she would have got out of Central Europe before WWII began, and would have got out of the Czech-German surroundings that caused her so much misfortune and unhappiness.
Baarovás beauty attracted the attention of some people in very high places. Hitler became infatuated with her, it is said. But this only lasted for a short while, and their relationship remained platonic. But it was Joseph Goebbels, Hitlers second in command, who fell head over heels in love with her and became her lover. He was completely obsessed with her and willing to leave his wife, his family, for her. And as she herself admitted in her memoirs, before she got spooked and started revising them, she herself said that she was enchanted by him. He may have been a bad person, but as a young girl she saw him as a powerful minister in a foreign government, and a charming man. Their relationship caused such a scandal that she was banned from starring in any more German films. Her career there was over. She was banned from appearing at the request of Goebbels wife, who was a good friend of Hitler. She went to Hitler and told him that her husband had gone half crazy over some Czech actress, and Hitler put a very quick stop to it. Lída Baarová came back to Prague.
Baarova was jailed for a year and a half after the war for having collaborated with the Nazis. Her sister, who was also an actress, was blacklisted because of Lída and subsequently committed suicide. The girls mother was also taken in for interrogation, where she suffered a heart attack and died.
Upon release from prison, with very few remaining relatives in what was then Czechoslovakia, Baarová emigrated to Austria, where she remained for the rest of her life. She returned to the Czech Republic on several occasions after the Velvet Revolution in 1989, and those who met her often talked of her as a chain-smoking, rather sad, very pretty old woman.

Krasna, fascinujuca zena, len strasna skoda jej smutneho osudu po 1945...Bola to vyborna herecka, a kohokolvek milenka bola alebo nebola, nebolo spravne, ze zato platila cely zivot.

You know a true beauty when they are old and withered and traces of their beauty remain. Very sad. She lost her mother during an interrogation just after the war and her sister passed away too. No children. A survivor and a victim of that war ❤️

I don't understand it either, but she had a huge offer from Hollywood, has an affair with a German movie star and an affair Joseph Goebbels.. Hitler exiled her from Germany as he did not want tabloid drama within his government, her career never recovered.

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach .
    Eclisistics 7:8
While my soul was still searching but not finding , I have found one upright man among a thousand , but not one upright woman among them all ...
I conclude; obeying the laws of God is for the good of mankind, breaking his laws will bring horror to mankind.....

Her affair with Goebbels took place from 1936 to 1938, and was over and done (Aug. 1938) before Neville Chamberlain's "Peace in Our Time" Munich Agreement (Sept. 1938) and Kristallnacht (Nov. 1938). At the time of the affair, Naziism was, for many, a captivating utopian movement led by a charismatic leader, like Leninism before it and like enthusiasm for Obama's "Hope and Change" more recently. It's easy to forget that eugenics was a progressive idea prior to WW II, whose proponents included Margaret Sanger, and in accordance with which Planned Parenthood was founded.
-- It's easy to judge with the benefit of hindsight, but in the 1930s, totalitarian leadership seemed attractive to many as a way to get out of the Depression, and there were many prominent Americans who supported either Naziism or Communism, just as today, there are many who support encroachments on our original Constitutional rights for the sake of efficiency, safety, and convenience. Perhaps future generations will judge Obama Girl as harshly as some commenters below judge this woman, who, as an actress, was likely as clueless about politics as Obama Girl.

@Margaret : And what do you know about Goebbels? Well? Or is it just easier to play the blame game? Lida B and Joesph G had broken up right before the holocaust started. How was she to know what would happen? That's the problem here. She is being condemned for crimes she had no part of, which is ridiculous!

Lordy. There isn't enough time in the day to refute your foolish and dangerous remarks. Read. Study this history more deeply. And don't confuse an American's "Hope and Change" for policies that ALWAYS had evil at its core. I am guessing you are a white guy with blue eyes who has fantasies that you would have been on the "right side" of evil.

    • @grizzlygrizzle
      @grizzlygrizzle Před 4 lety

@@libbyringo8419 -- "Hope and Change" policies always had evil at their core, as recent events are revealing. The Obama administration pushed American governmental institutions in the direction of the secret police of a totalitarian state, from the FBI to the CIA to the IRS. Evil is on the side of collectivism and the totalitarianism that it entails. Good is on the side of letting people live their lives as they please, as long as they don't interfere with others' lives. Huge-government, collectivist, dependency-inducing ideologies attract lazy parasites and tyrants, "livestock" and "veterinarians."

She was a mistress of Goebbels and it was a quite big scandal in Germany and Czechoslovakia on the eve of WWII. During WWII she tried to seduce one of the highest SS officer, Horst Böhme without success. After war she was paid dearly, almost executed, deflected to South America, her family was ruined, her career was over, and banned to visit her country for 45 years.
