- Ann Chiu, a longtime CIBC customer, was victim to a bank fraud scam last month after trusting and complying with a fraudster during what seemed to be an innocent phone call from her bank.
Posing as a banker, the caller requested Chiu withdraw thousands of dollars, purchase multiple Apple gift cards from various stores, and then send the gift card codes to help them with a supposed fraud investigation.
CIBC said it is currently working with Chiu for a resolution, adding that the company “will never ask a client to assist in a fraud investigation or request money to be sent” via gift cards or eTransfers.
Chiu, a small business owner, lost approximately $14,000. Global’s Sean O’Shea reports.

Sorry to hear this happened to her BUT....
She should have known better, this was an obvious scam even if you lived under a rock for the last 50 years.
I can't believe people are still falling for the gift card scam, no legitimate business of any kind will accept gift cards as payment.
@@kenlompart9905 "no legitimate business of any kind will accept gift cards as payment"? lol Where do you spend your gift cards then? Are you using a Tim Hortons gift card to buy elicit drugs or what?
@@IARRCSim Try using your Tim Hortons card as payment anywhere other than at Tim Hortons, DUH.
Doesn't mean she deserved it
@@IARRCSimobviously you can spend gift cards at the associated business... the point being made is that you cant go spending a walmart gift card on amazon. Have you ever eaten at a restaurant and paid using an itunes gift card?
Apple gift cards, that wasn't a red flag? really?
When they asked for apple gift cards...that was a red flag by itself. Banks or any financial institutions would never do that.More education is required on this kind of things. As business owners, they should have been aware of this in 1st place.
EXACTLY 💯
You would think business owners would know better than that! Smh!
I work as a frauds analyst and come across such cases on a regular basis. The sad part is there's nothing banks can do to recover such funds since the information was voluntarily shared by the cardholders but I feel so bad for them. People need to be educated better on such matters. Always hang up if you have even a slightest suspicion, always call the number on the back of the card. The gift card thing is just baffling, idk how people believe that.
Bruh 😂 who pays be gift cards
Exactly, no legitimate business of any kind will accept gift cards as payment.
Whenever I hear an Indian accident on the other line I hang up
or Chinese basically any foreign caller. I also screen everything and never click on a link.
That stereotype doesn't always work, though. Transunion has call centres in India and they don't have any considerably convenient offices in Canada so if you need to do any business with them, you'd have to have highly sensitive conversations about your credit reporting with an Indian, and yes one with an Indian accent. Microsoft and many other big considerably trusted companies also has call centres in India.
I hardly ever pick up calls. That works better. Determining who is trustworthy or not is very difficult. Simple rules like never buying gift cards for anyone who calls are likely helpful but there are far more scams. Doing all banking in person would help if the caller claims to be a bank. Phone numbers can be spoofed so you can't trust a call just because it is from a recognized phone number. Voices can be faked too even though I don't think many scams use that technology yet.
@@IARRCSim If you need to talk to them call them yourself using the official numbers. Never click any links coming to your messages unless you know the send personally. If it sounds to good to be true delete it lol
Either I hang up OR if I feel like playing around, I'll pretend like I don't know how to speak English.
"Sorry no English. English no good. No good English" 😆
She should have known better.
This is why you don’t pickup the phone right away
Yeah, need to be vigilant before giving money to someone you're not sure about. And I agree...make the call not them calling you asking for money cos that is quite fishy
Wth this is ridiculous 🤦♀️
You lost me at gift cards.
Sorry, but are people this naive?
@elterrifico9522 yep, and I feel sorry for them but with lots of compassion. They need to become more cynical.
Always call the bank directly yourself with a listed number. Do not use any numbers given to you by anyone on the phone
Better yet, go to the bank personally and ask to speak to a manager.
Exactly. @@kenlompart9905
Never never never answer a text or call when someone claims to be your bank or even family member. Hang up, block the number and call the number on the back if your bank's card yourself directly. Or to to your nearest branch. They CANNOT open your bank files without identification authorization
I'm sorry but how do you run a businness and not know about this
Why are people so gullible?
everyone gets more gullible with age. If you aren't what most people consider paranoid, you're likely at risk of getting scammed too. You won't think it could happen to you until it does.
you gave your Pin Number to them omg.
Obviously it’s a scam. She should have disconnect and end the conversation
In Canada, if there is anything serious, you will RECEIVE A LETTER from the organization involved (CRA, bank, etc...). Remember this and you will save yourself a lot of headache.
She must have a tender and good heart to be so unsuspecting.
No serious and real financial institution deals in gift cards.
No serious and real employer gives compensation in gift cards.
How can we drill this message down to the minds of old folks?!
🤷🏻♂️🤷🏾♂️
“Go buy apple gift cards” LOL 😂 YES RIGHT AWAY!!
This is why you just hang up and block all #'s you dont know.
I'm sorry She lost the money, she should have known better because the bank does not ask you buy gift cards. That should have been a clue that this call was a fraud.
How did it not cause red flag when told to get gift cards?
If you are told to buy gift cards RUN
Well, when you receive an unexpected phone call, and the other person on the line speaks Chinese🇨🇳.
- That's when you know you are being scammed.
Most of those bank scams nowadays are indians. The chinese ones are packages, and embassy.
True hard to trust especially any phone conversation and am not answering unknown calls mostly 😢😢
😢so sad
I from time to time experience that kind of scammer call too. I tell them I have to go. I will call [Bank name] on my own time not yours.
With the advancement of technology, I suppose scams frauds and computer crimes will become even more common. So just watch out if someone you don't knoe calls you suddenly.
even without otp i lost 1500cad
All banking Verypaying credet card débet card
O
Banks don't need gift cards. I feel bad for them, but you have to be pretty stupid to fall for this.
😂😢
Don’t feel sorry for her at all she’s old enough to know better. Smarten up next time my 90 year grandmother would know better.
well said
And it’s good that she shared for everyone to be aware. Scammers don’t stop deceiving gullible people 😢
and she runs a business
