  • The Fieseler Storch FI156 was used by the German Luftwaffe during World War 2 as a reconnaissance aircraft, featuring an incredibly low stall speed meaning it could loiter over a battlefield and give the observer a good field of view.
    Join me in this video as I take a look at the Fieseler Storch FI156 plastic model kit in 1/72 scale from Airfix, which was recently (2019) reintroduced to the range as part of the Vintage Classics series of kit. In this video I investigate the information on the box, instructions, decals and quality of the plastic parts.
    Originally tooled in 1967, and only featured a few times in the range in the subsequent years, how has this older kit stood up to the test of time? At the time of this video the RRP in the UK was £5.99 and the item code was A01047V.

    I remember buying this kit in the early 70s and it came in a clear plastic bag stapled to a card with that picture of the Storch. It cost a shilling or 5p a bit different to £5.99!!! God, I'm old.

    Waited for this kit to come out for a long time after it was announced. Eventually got it back in January, but have only so far had a quick look in the box. Will be interesting to see if my kit has all that discolouration, so must have a closer look. Was thinking of getting a second one so I could do both versions. However, its going to be a dog to build (in fairness its very old as you have eluded to) so I think I'll stick with the one I've got and just admire the artwork on the box when I look up at my shelves of unmade kits. Another great in-box review Matt - thanks. Quite a mixed back these Vintage Classics kits are throwing up but oh! The nostalgia!

    Nice review, Matt! I love your unboxing reviews as much as the builds, so I hope you keep on making the unboxing videos between builds. For those who like the airplane, I would opt for the Academy kit. It is about £2 more but the kit is much, much better; well worth the extra cost. The Heller kit may still be found (the AZ kit is the Heller kit reboxed) but for some reason costs much more.

    Gosh, I remember buying this kit from a stall at the Great Yorkshire Show on a school trip around 1980/81. It was a blister packed kit in pale blue plastic and I remember being really happy with the finished article but then gutted to find the spindly undercarriage couldn't take the weight of the model, bending and ruining it!

    Another Fantastic in-box review Matt! I was wondering if this vintage kit was worth the price tag vs the 1/72 scale Academy kit. (which retails around the same price here in NZ)...................yeah I think you have successfully answered my question pal! Also on a technical point (video related not kit related), I loved seeing you use a black back drop for filming the clear parts Matt . It really captured the lack of a clear canopy frame that you were describing (vs a white back drop which makes it hard to see the detail on the clear parts, which tend to reflect the lighting way too much ). Please keep using that for future reference.
    BTW Good luck with this kit Matt! I only HOPE LIKE anything Airfix vintage will reissue some of their classic 1/32 scale car kits from the same era as this kit. Made a 1971 boxing of the 1911 Vaxhall Prince Henry & was shock by the detail on that kit but I digress.

      @ModelMinutes  Před 4 lety

      Thanks! I'm actually looking at moving to a black background for most of my videos now - I completely agree, it's much easier to see the details (plus it stops my camera from being completely unsure what to focus on)

  • @stevesstuff1450
    @stevesstuff1450 Před 3 lety

    Recently finished building one of these!
    It does take quite a bit of work to clean it all up nicely, and to get some of the parts fit well...some of the undercarriage struts had warped and took some persuasion to get them straightened!
    There are two sets of long 'legs' for the wheels as one set is slightly longer; on the real aircraft they stretched when flying, so you can depict the aircraft in flight if you want to....shame that Airfix no longer supply the stands. I'd bought a bag of stands some time ago, so I used one of those!
    Once it's all done, it looks pretty good. :-) Better than you'd think for a kit of this vintage!
    Oh, and it's pronounced 'Feesler'.... if the 'i' comes before the 'e' it's pronounced with the long 'ee' sound. If the 'i' comes after the 'e', then it's pronounced with the 'i' sound... ;-)

  • @Ryker45

    Hello Matt, I enjoyed this video, your usual professional job. That kit to be fair is shocking. It was shocking when I was a kid never mind 53 years later, It deffinately goes into my recycled old tat range of kits from Airfix. I dont understand why they cannot just make some new tools of this stuff, like they were a few years ago. Can you imagine a 12 year old buying that with his pocket money or whatever you call it now, attracted by the Roy Cross artwork and then how dissapointed when you get it home. Well hope you read my little rant. bye for now and keep up the excellent work. Oh yes on the paint range, the new humbrol acrlics that are made in the UK are pretty fair

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the info! Yeah, i guess they are trying to make a little more profit with the tools they still have - given my research this particular kit didn't have a lot of releases over the years. I have bought some of the newer humbrol paints and they certainly have improved

    Like the video, thought about getting the Storch myself but wary of the quality issues. The landing gear option might be an attempt to show the gear in flight without the weight of the aircraft the strut would be extended; bit like the shock absorber on a car when its jacked up.

    I'm building the 1967 release of this kit right now. I see Airfix have not updated the parts at all. The worse flaw in this kit is its terrible engineering. There is no subframe to support the weight of the wings which attach directly to a very fragile, three part canopy. Achieving good alignment of wings, tail planes and undercarriage is a real challenge. The only 8 year old who could build this was Leonardo da Vinci. Fun in a perverse sort of way!
