- Sorry its been a while but the house move went pear shaped big time. Who in their right mind would sell a house these days, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully!
So this build has been plodding along for many weeks and it may show. I'm not one for spending months on a build because I loose interest so easily.
Thanks to the people who have stuck and believed in the channel I thank you all 👍😎

You really do take kit building to another level and you're entertaining to listen to while you're at it. Brilliant.
I think you did a great job of building and updating the original kit, despite all life's interruptions.
It’s a really amazing aeroplane and that last scene with ramp cars and people is museum quality. Loved every second of this build especially the moulding and rebuilding to allow the doors to be opened, brilliant job.
I had this kit three times in my life (I'm 59), in the 1970s and 1980s. The plastic was nice and thick on this kit, when it was made at this time. Another nice thick plastic kit, made at the same time, was the Short Sunderland lll. I haven't bought Airfix kits for over thirty years, the plastic is too thin, almost translucent.
A beautiful build of a kit I'm sure any of us attempted in our youth but I'm equally sure none of us managed to build anything as impressive as your build - Brilliant
An incredible amount of work done to get the kit looking right. Your patience is rewarded with an amazing end result.
Take a bow, brilliant 👏 🙌 👌
This is without question one of my favorite builds. I’ve watched numerous times now. 😁
Excellent excellent excellent build !👍
Thank you👍
I have one of these, and I thought it would be a quick build.!! What an amazing job, beautiful. An old story ,one of these beauties was on fina😂l approach into a North American airport. The tower controller asked, "Say what kind of plane is that?" The pilot, a Brit said proudly, "This is a Bristol Freighter." After a short pause, the controller responded, "Did you build it yourself? "😂
😂😂👍
You "turned a sow's ear into a silk purse" as we say in Ireland! What a great job! Bravo!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good on ya for sticking with it. As tenacity is its own reward, thanks for sharing.
I flew in one in 1960 from Hurn airport to Cherbourg. I have no memory of the flight only the journey to Hurn, waiting at Hurn, being called for the flight, and landing at Cherbourg and going through customs. I do remember wanting to build a model of one when Airfix or another company made a model of one.
Looks great! These old kids need a lot of work, but you have great skills 👍🏻
Your patience, attention to detail and pursuit of accuracy never cease to amaze me. For us viewers it makes for a fascinating watch and I hope you're pleased with the superb end result in spite of the many frustrations encountered in getting there!
In a corny B&W British film "A Weekend With Lulu" (it's on CZcams) a Silver City Superfreighter features in the last few minutes.
Will check it out👍
I remember watching these as they flew low over my Uncle's house in Southend, taking off for Europe. Also used to see the later four engined Carvairs rumble over too.
@@GilbertdeClare0704 I saw them too, from the other side of the estuary😀.
@@Robutube1 They were impressive, weren't they ? As a kid they always seemed to me to lumber along, yet they were quite awesome as they flew right over the rooftops as we all had evening tea😂😂
@@GregsModelsamazing result ...im not going to lie...i wouldnt have the paitence (or skill level) for it.
Outstanding work, she looks fantastic! 😳😲👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🥰😍😎
I can’t believe the skills you have- simply amazing
Fascinating, glued to the TV start to finish. Brilliant mate, and I nearly got the standard greeting at the beginning 😂 nice one
Yes nearly😂
I remember seeing a film about the Bristol Freighter as a kid. I had to look it up "The Man in the Sky" 1957 staring Jack Hawkins. I seem to remember it being an Ok film for the time. I really like your build and especially the British United colours. I remember flying to Jersey in a BUA BAC 111. I would have probably flown over your house.
Watching this build took me straight back to around 1959-1960 when I was a young teenage Airfix fan. Back then their kits ranged from two shillings (10p in new money) to 17 shillings and six pence (87.5p in new money). I think the Bristol Freighter was around 15 shillings (75p in new money). Yes they were a bit on the crude side but in the range of most schoolboys pocket money. Over the years they have come a long way and I'm astounded at the detail in todays kits. Of course the current prices reflect this. As a final note I loved watching your build of what wasn't considered a popular model.
Yes. I paid two shillings for HMS Cossack in one of those clear plastic bags. Tattersalls in Clitheroe.
Excellent. I made one as boy. Got an unmade one (boxed) in my spare room. Brought back happy memories. I remember playing in G-ANVR in 1965 when it went to the dump at Southend airport awaiting scrapping. Me and my mates climbed out of the escape hatch on the roof and we used to sit on the wing watching the take offs and landings of the Carvairs and Viscounts. G-ANWK and others were lined up. Needless to say we helped ourselves to many of the old dials etc for souvenirs. "DO NOT JAR - HANDLE LIKE EGGS". Still got a few bits. Thanks, cheered me up.😊
That must have been a great visit. The aircraft was leased by Air Charter in Mar 1955 for operations on the airline’s new cross-Channel Southend-Calais car ferry service - ground-breaking at the time!
Awesome! your work on this model is just amazing. Beyond museum quality model. Sincere congratulations and thanks for sharing your techniques and tips.
Wow, great result finally! Very interrested airplane!
Excellent build.I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
An amazing job. Superb result and some good tips too like copying the decals to make masks. Well worth all the effort.
Incredible work, you sir are truly a MASTER BUILDER and an artist also! Wouldn’t it be fun to have old Goldfinger’s car going into the plane like in the movie! Great build sir!
The patience of a saint, the skills of a brain surgeon ! BRAVO sir, BRAVO !
You got a jewel from a crude stone. I am trying to do so with an Airfix Catalina issued in 1964,so your tips are very useful, thanks for sharing
Now that's modeling. Great job.
Now that is modeling, Greg ! Very impressive !
I remember the 60ies when British Air Ferries Superfreighters landed her in Ostend (Belgium) on a daily basis. We called them fatheads. I recall the model, too - assisted my father with the sanding and painting. Nice job!
I remember building one of these way back in early 60s. I was only 10 or 11! Those clam shell doors never worked! And I have a memory the decals we Silver City.
Greg. Before I forget to comment because your video is so mesmerizing. You're my hero and I wish you all the best!
Wow, thank you!
I did two trips (1968) in the Bristol Type 170 Freighter Mk.31, of SAFE, New Zealand.
Incredible exceptional work. Thanks from Sicily
I think that's amazing Great build. These odd British prop cargo planes are fun.
Brilliant and Fantastic as always. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
There is a Bristol freighter in Omaka (Sth Island) in New Zealand. Videos on You Tube, very nice sir, great that you didn't park it up forever!
That's quite something, thanks for sharing with us.
Used to watch these fly over our home in Southend on Sea
Amazing work my friend.
Fearless. You continue to prove there is no such thing as a bad kit. Awesome work.
What a beauty, Greg! 👍👍👍.
Whats to say... Wow! Lots of work really paid off!!!
I built one of these back in the 60’s. Simple kit, typical Airfix.
I truly love how you bring up ancient Airfix kits to display standards using scratch building techniques.
Excellent build. When pouring rubber just pour it in one continuous flow into one corner and allow it to find its way around the pattern. Continue all the way to the top. That way no bubbles will attach to the pattern.
FANTASTIC video 😃
BEAUTIFUL model👍
You are real craftsman!
Thank you very much!
I lived inside the wreck of an old Superfreighter for two years during my youth. Consequently I knew every inch of the fuselage very well. What you have done here is commendable! Though I wonder at your infinite powers of patience! Well done and good luck.
What? Literally? Or you just played in one?
I lived inside it.@@chrismartin3197
Not for you yet another Tamiya P-47! Your projects are getting more extensive with even better results! A wonderful model. May I also compliment you on your editing, commentary and production in general. Everything explained, no time wasted.
Must appreciated 😎
Absolutely fantastic work. Very well done and the video was enjoyable to watch.
Nice one mate... I went for a ride in a Bristol Freighter ages ago with SAFE Air.. cheers from NZ👍🇳🇿✈️
Fantastic build Greg! Show's in no uncertain terms what can be done with these old classics. This is my kind of modelling too. I love nothing more than taking old kits, often subjects that are not available elsewhere, and correcting and adding all the missing details. I could build more state of the art models, but stuff like this is what I enjoy the most. Makes me wish Airfix had released a Carvair to go along with the Superfreighter.
Yes that would have been a big kit👍
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting!
some fantastic modelling Greg, just to show what can be done with these ancient kits 😄😄👍
Great build. I made one in the mid sixties. Then I built another about 1995 or 1996 when it was re-released. I painted it mainly using Halfords spray cans. I did the white cockpit framing using thin strips of white electrical insulating tape . The whole model including the canopy was then brushed with Johnson's Kleer. I still have the model in mint condition.
You turned a wobbly kit into a master piece. EXCELLENT WORK !!! a show winner for sure.
Literally made a silk purse from a sows ear. I'm not surprised you had to take a few days off! Fantastic build Greg 👍
Now go buy a Tamiya tank and take it easy on yourself 😀.
😂😂
Fantastic - attention to detail is amazing 👏👏
Brilliant build, I love how you are able to take obscure subjects and make them into fantastic show pieces. Keep up the great videos, they’re all very interesting and instructive.
You've just described what makes Greg stand out among others. He is so underrated Imo.
Awesome! I used to see one in Terrace, British Columbia, Canada for many years. There is one in the aviation museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba as well.
The man, the myth, the legend!
Stunning, looks great. Well Done.
I’m one of the exceptions mate. Built this as a lad and I remember it being an impressive size…..a bit like Mars Bars.
Hand painted it with original Airfix enamels from bottles.
Halcyon days!!
Great job on this one Greg!
Sorry - great doesn’t do it justice!!
I hope Airfix can see what can be done with this kit. It’s a remarkable transformation!
I'm keen to do a video on painting a model by brush using Humbrol enamel paints. Just to show the technique used before my airbrush came on the scene.
Cor, Greg, that was some build! I'm very impressed!
Thanks👍😎
Wow - a great build and a super video, Greg!
The legend is back!! Awesome as always Greg. Glad you’re back!
Hope you're well👍
Superb build and wonderful attention to detail.
Breathtaking. From a lame duck kit to a brilliantly detailed and painted one. Well done.
Great job Greg, I think I'll put my kit back in the stash as it looks like a lot of work is needed. Oh well 🤔 Thanks for sharing. Cheers Bob👍
That's a shame Bob these kits need building👍
@@GregsModels true mate but I don’t think I have the skill to do it as good as you have mate 😳👍
Great build! I don't ever remember seeing this in the model shop in Yeovil in the late 60's or early 70's... perhaps it was alway sold out 😄
Very, very nice! A really unusual subject expertly updated🙂
Stunning result as always! Always keep your 'don't give a damn' attitude, luv it. Oh, bye the way, you said bogey 😂😂
Fabulous work!
I seem to remember back in the day as well as the loading ramp it came with a couple of little cars. 🚗 🚙
Glorious build, and my big sister remembers flying from Lyde in 1955 with mum and dad and a motorbike and sidecar on a freightliner, and having to have a medical before being allowed to fly!
Remember seeing these fly out of Lydd Airport many moons ago :)
Amazing Greg!
Just beautiful Greg, a real piece of art.
Watching this triggers another memory: February 1964, Napier Airport opening, New Zealand. I was 4 and we saw the RAF Handley Page Hastings, Bristol Brittania, and the the Victor bomber as well as many USAF aircraft and the RNZAF Vampires putting on an impressive display. The Bristol freighter was there with its clamshell doors open for the public. It looked like a plumber’s nightmare inside with all manner of ducting and pipes, gaping stomach, ribs and entrails all on display. I was truly terrified, firmly believing that it was about to swallow up my mother. Nothing could induce me to enter. I can still remember that eviscerated plane and the danger I thought it presented! But I was only 4 and eventually overcame this fear of strange equipment and earned a PPL many years after. 😱🤣
😂👍
I was the kid who built one of these back in the day - it didn't look anything like as good as your one. Love the markings aswell - just before BUA became part of British Caledonian.
Excellent Greg. Great build.
Fantastic work
Superb, Greg , as always.
Great to see you back!
Some 63 years ago (aged 10) I took my 2nd and 3rd air experience flights in the Bristol freighter, flying from Southend (Rochford) to Oostend on day trip to Belgium with my parents. The outward flight was in, I believe, a British Air Ferries craft and was noisy, smelly and uncomfortable. The return journey was in a Sabena Airlines version which was not quite as noisy or smelly but was made extremely uncomfortable when we encountered a thunderstorm on the way back! In the dark!
My mum vowed never to fly again but in later life relented for a family holiday to Croatia.
I, naturally being an adventurous lad, loved every second of it, including the storm!
ABSOLUTELY incredible!!
I am really looking forward to seeing this build. Greg, you are correct. Much as I wanted this kit when I was 10 years old, I could not find it anywhere. I do not doubt that you will turn an old moulding into a beautiful piece of work.
Really inspirational. Thanks for creating this video.
For that amount of effort. You could of scratch built it. But fantastic results as always mate. Always a privilege to watch you work :)
Absolutely stunning!!!!
amazing built. thx for sharing.
Beautiful job, Greg.
Great work on this old kit Greg. I love this kind of build. Thanks for sharing.
Really like these classic kit builds. Great job.
Super impressive build as always, the challenges you overcome through the course of your builds never cease to amaze me. Always love watching your videos
Fascinating, great job!
Good to see you back on the tube and modelling Greg. Fantastic build as per usual. Looking forward to the ongoing kit builds 😊
Fantastic work as usual Greg, truly outstanding!
What a great job. I remember these freighters flying in and out of Cambridge in the very early 70's when I was the size of a maggot.
Incredible job. I admire your perseverance with this kit, really amazing!
Thats a brilliant build. Love the scratch building.
