You sound like my brother from a different mother, as I share all of those "bad habits". In addition, I build aircraft and armor with several of each under construction at any given time. Since my two main bugbears are masking canopies and assembling tracks I tend to do those first while my enthusiasm is high; I always use commercial canopy masks if available. My favorite part of most aircraft builds is the cockpit, and I am rarely completely satisfied with the detail (at least in somewhat older kits), so I frequently add PE or resin components. I also like scratch built details. All of this adds time and makes for protracted builds. But I try never to hurry a project if I can, always allowing glue, primer, and paint to dry and cure properly. In the end this is a hobby, so I try not to be hard on myself (I am my own worst critic) and just focus on the fun. The models will get completed in their own good time.

    Thanks for this.
I am trying to keep these problems in check by sticking to one scale (1/24, despite not too much choice compared to say 1/35).
Keeping my interest to a certain decade / time (post WWII 1940s, 1950s, early 1960s).
Despite this I have ended up with five vehicles in various stages of construction and painting.
One advantage of temporarily shelving a work in progress is gaining experience on the current project which can be applied to the others when they are brought back to the bench.
Def resisting buying any more. Will try to do a bit of tidying up though!

    1. You can never have too many kits.
    2. Order to Chaos....Chaos to Order.
    3. No more than 3 on the go.
    4. Better to shelf it than to bin it.
    5. Yep....never rush a build.

Reminds me of a fellow modeler’s comment when my club suggested a contest focused on building a model that is “out of your comfort zone”. My modeler friend joked that finishing any model is out of his comfort zone, and therefore he would enter an unfinished model. He got o lot of laughs with that. We must maintain our sense of humor in this hobby!

Lol yes, luckily for me i build just about everything. I actually like new and different models. I had a spider climb out of a model as i was spraying it, lol, almost had heart failure. It was a model from someone else, been in their garage for years. I thought id give it some fresh paint which excited the spider.

I reckon we all have some of those traits, I,m with you on canopies, seems a chore at times, and the room for error is always there. My way of getting over the chore bit, is to mask it, then leave the painting till another day, sort of attack it with a fresh enthusiasm, seems to help, but the dread of the canopy always surfaces on the next project. Thanks for taking the time to do this upload, makes me feel I,m normal in having these traits!

I always allow glued parts to set properly usually overnight. So I continue to build and enjoy myself on another kit. Once I have a few assembled, I batch primer them. It’s good to batch primer as the fumes are not nice. Whatever you’re doing, you’re enjoying yourself.

First of all, I really appreciate listening to a genuine feedback showing weaknesses, which we pretty much all have in the end.
For me the most troublesome weaknesses is to spend a lots of time on buying and researching on kits, and not completing them!
In the same fashion, I'm usually building a few kits at the same time so I can save a bit of time and money avoiding wasting the paint. In the end, I tend to end up completing no kit, or unfinished kits accumulating.

One can surely relate to at least some of those. The one about clutter I am trying to combat by making sure a designated place on the desk is clear before going to bed. It pretty much means the rest of the desk is cluttered, but at least there is a clear space and that motivates to start again the next day.
    Thx for sharing!

Well I've got all your bad habits from 1 - 5. I've recently taken to buying pre - cut paint masks and this has helped a great deal. I watch Jenesis Designs and she suggested using Aluminum tape (thin version) for canopy masking. I haven't tried this but I'm going to give it a go.

    1) Gone from having three kits in the stash to many, many more. These are kits I truly hope to build, though at my age if I don't live long enough to complete them my children can make money selling them which will help them out. I've discovered the hard way to buy a desirable kit when it is first offered if I can afford it, as it may soon be off the market and then, if can be located, usually is at a much higher price, if available at all. 2) At the end of a build I reset the entire work area, putting tools and paints in their respective places and cleaning up the area to a decent state of cleanliness. 3) I find I can never work more than two at time due to space restrictions. While glue or paint on one kit is drying I do things on the other, then alternate etc... 4) Binned two kits then decided to start shelving them. Have gone back later and completed most; use the others I've shelved because of my build errors for practicing new techniques and trying new products. 5) I've rushed a few to completion to my regret. Things were going nicely, I should have stepped away from them and just come back later to complete them as I hurried and ruined them.

I can relate to a few of these. Rushing a phase of construction tends to happen for me because I always seem to break a build up into tasks to complete. I am working to change that by just looking at what I might do "today" and making sure that "might do" is a small enough task to not be inclined to rush the job. But I admit this is not an easy thing to fix and I am still not sure what the answer is.
Too many builds going at once started being a problem, but I am forcing myself to complete projects I have started before beginning another, so I hope to keep this under control somewhat. Again, not an easy thing to do.
I have mostly solved the lack of space issue for building by much better desk organization, diligently tweaking the work area for keeping items readily at hand while out of the way. But it does require a continuous effort to put tools and models away after a build session. I use plastic stackable containers to hold each project. This has several benefits. It keeps parts from getting lost. It keeps the model dust free when I am not working on it. It protects the model during the build phase, and the stackable nature of the boxes means I can put a build up on a shelf easily.
Where to keep built models, I think we all have that problem and so far my only solution has been to take older builds and either bin them, store them, or give them away.
I might add another problem. Too much time being distracted by Internet and CZcams videos. There's an up and downside to this. I am learning a lot and getting better, but I also waste too much time at this.

    • @deonjansen
      @deonjansen  Před 4 měsíci +1

to be honest - i really need to address the desk problem. i need to use my space better as you say. My solution to the internet distraction, i just put on something in the background while modeling and only half heartedly watch it, it works to a degree.

@@deonjansen, Yeah, I addressed this a few years ago by identifying all the issues with my current workbench at the time. Then I spent some time evaluating those issues to come up with various solutions which I have been implementing steadily since then. Combining that with periodic re-evaluations, has lead to some real improvements in my work area.

1: Dont giving the model time enough to fully cure (plastics, fillers, paints)
2: Picking the wrong time to proceed the next filling-/painting-/weathering stage
3: Looking at Mig Jimenez (still love his passion and products 100%).. to see what an 1943 plane should look like
4: Seeing little bpys and girls that I might have prevented from becomming bad people quiting building all sorts of models, just because young people these days are even more fast and ferocious as ever. Kids play with illusions these days instead of models and thats a shame..
5: Not buying up complete stock of WingNut Wings in 2020

I do this operation. But get either Rushed or Bored. Model quality suffers.

I sometimes do more than one model at a time. I am mostly into planes. I build in 1/48, so lately i have taken to warbirds, but because theres less work on them than modern aircraft, and oviously because i am addicted to the challange, I started doing 3 at a time and now I am at 5..incluiding scratchbuilding. And because i build mostly after work, i put in 2 or 3 hours every night for 3 to 4 weeks. Lol but after that i dont want anything to do with models for a while.
