Several people are saying this isn't the first episode. I watched this on Max, so if that's the case, blame them for having the episode order wrong.
This is the first episode in terms of airing order because as you likely know, networks really didn't care about the order in which they aired cartoons back then since they weren't typically serialised.
It's not the first episode in terms of the correct production order. That's a manbat episode. If you want to make more vids with correct order look up production order.
I think the episode with the man-bat mutated dude was “supposed” to be the first episode.
I think it's like futurama where airing order is different from production order. I once wound up downloading the same episode twice for that.
U watched the first episode Aired
The Man Bat Ep On Leathwr Wings is the pilot
The box set put the eps in production order and not air order
In terms of broadcast order, it is, but On Leather Wings was the first episode of the DCAU to be produced. Kinda like how in Teen Titans, the first and third episodes (Final Exam and Divide and Conquer, respectively) had *their* broadcast dates switched.
Also, back when BTAS was BTAS, and even when it got rebranded into The Adventures of Batman and Robin, the WB (Warner Bros. Animation, not the channel) wanted to use the show to tie into Batman Returns, which is why Catwoman has blonde hair (when BTAS is rebranded again as The New Batman Adventures, it's retconned that Selina bleaches her hair until either Cat Scratch Fever or Tyger, Tyger). Ironic, because the Joker and Penguin are alive in this series and Batman Returns would feature comedic takes on Two-Face and Riddler. The New Batman Adventures, the *second* rebrand and third *season* of BTAS, features the characters in their original intended designs with simplified designs meant to reduce the amount of animation errors and inconsistencies within the episodes.
Speaking of which, and I assume you know this, but the series was outsourced to various Southeast Asian animation studios based on storyboards by Bruce Timm and other animators. One of these companies (the South Korea-based Akom Productions, the studio currently doing The Simpsons) being the animation company behind part 2 of this episode. Not only were they a contributing factor to one of the worst episodes to ever grace the DCAU (The Prophecy of Doom), but they also contributed to some of the worst animation errors throughout BTAS period.
Reminder that it's 2024 and while we have Batman shampoo we STILL don't have Conditioner Gordon.

Take my like and leave.
But first, take your medal.

Truly the worst timeline :(
Hopefully we won't get Dick... Grayson mark Lube!

Another good Batman on the subject: "The Hammer of Justice is unisex!" punch
I mean it’s rated E for everyone
The greatest Batman of them all.
Batman: The hammer of justice is unisex!
That is still one of my favorite unintentionally funny Batman lines.
Interesting bit of Lore as to why Selena has Blonde hair: She uses hair dye to keep her Black hair Blonde but before Batman TNAS, she finds out it was being tested on Cats and stops using it, reverting back to her Black hair
Also to add, they originally made Selina Blonde in the animated series so she could match the Selina from Batman Returns. After all, the animated series took a lot of Inspiration from the Tim Burton Batman Movies.
@@KeyMasterX didn’t know that, thanks!
I never knew that. That is good to know
@@KeyMasterX Pretty much. Just like how they made The Penguin look more like Danny Devito version from Batman Returns.
@@KeyMasterXyup, same with the penguins flippers, it was to connect with Batman Returns

Cannot wait till you see "heart of ice" an episode so good the comics literally reconed an entire backstory because the TAS version was so much better.
Whenever people talk about who the best villains are, I always go to the comic where Mr. Freeze breaks out of Arkham to make it snow and it ends at Nora's grave where he explains that he did it because she loved the snow and he wouldn't want her to be sad on Christmas Eve. Top tier villain origin.
No no no no. Not that episode 😭😭
That episode is so moving I cried back in the day and my 8 year old son cried when he saw it for the first time the other day.
The Mask of the Phantasm movie is pretty much the origin story for this Batman.
Have you watched it in black and white? It’s a MUCH better experience in black and white since it takes place in a 1940’s setting.
@@andrewrowland1989 That doesn't seem to line up since in Batman Beyond its referenced that Bruce took out Ra's al ghul in 2009. If Bruce was at minimum 18 during the origin story portion, and we say it takes place in 1940, Bruce would be around 87 in 2009, meanwhile in Batman Beyond Bruce is is said to be in the 70-80 age range.
@@R0-83-RT I’m not literally saying it’s in the 40’s. I’m saying it LOOKS like something from the 40’s, based on the style. Just try watching it in black and white and you will get a whole new experience out of it!
@@andrewrowland1989 Fair and no disagreements there, however can you understand how saying "it takes place in a 1940s setting" can be misconstrued.
Two words: Baby Doll. BABY. DOLL. If you do only one more episode from Batman TAS, make that the one.
I didn't mean to
Seconded
My favorite episode, it showed the true heart of Batman as a man who wishes to save people. No matter their background.
@@USMC49er that seems to be lost in more modern versions. He's lost his compassion. He wants to help everyone he puts away
"Look. That's me in there. The real me. There I am! ...But it's not really real, is it. Just made up and pretend, like my family and my life and everything else! WHY COULDN'T YOU JUST LET ME MAKE BELIEVE?"
Your memory is correct, Catwoman does typically have black hair. IIRC, she has blonde hair in this show because Batman Returns just came out/was about to come out, and they made her blonde to match Michelle Pfeiffer.
In the comics and media, yes, her hair is black. However, for the beginning of Batman TAS,Selina's hair was blonde for the Tim Burton film but later in New Adventures, she does.
Yep, that's the gist of it
My first batman tas episode was "On leather wings" because that's the way Amazon had in it's episode order
I always thought on leather wings was the first episode too. It was the first episode I saw, and I watched them when they were first aired.
The only episode I remembered watching was "I have Batman in my basement". I wish I remembered a better episode
I’m pretty sure it’s the first in production order too. I’m only saying this because they parallel the opening shot in the episode, in the final scene of “Epilogue”, which is what they originally intended to be the finale of the DCAU.
Same here as I watched the series via Blu-Ray.
On Leather Wings was first in production order (therefore, the first episode), but Cat and the Claw aired before it, out of order, making it the ‘first episode’ for a lot of people.
As a 90’s kid, The Animated Series was one of the greatest things of our generation. You couldn’t wait to run home from school to watch it on Cartoon Network. I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again, Kevin Conroy was and will always be the definitive voice for Batman. From TAS to the films to the Arkham video games, he was a hero to so many. It pains me to say that the character of Batman will never be the same again.
Rest In Peace Kevin Conroy, thank you for being our Batman. You’ll never be forgotten. ❤
It was on fox kids before there was a cartoon network.
@@ragingrat7670 I remember those days.
It's wild that the dark colour tones in the series were achieved by producing the backgrounds on black paper, as opposed to the standard white.
HBO Max is on something, this is not the first episode. This is the 15th episode, The Cat and the Claw Part I.
The first episode is On Leather Wings.
This is the first one with a cat-themed anti-hero (or any kind of hero or villain) who had claws to cup open glass. Prior to this it was just tools as I recall.
The "met your match, its a woman" thing is because she is aware of Batman and Catwoman's interaction and how he seemed to let Catwoman get away (seemed from Redclaw's perspective).
For some iconic episodes to watch: Heart of Ice, Joker's Favor, Perchance to Dream (probably the most popular 'batman-bruce' episode), Harley and Ivy, It's Never Too Late, and of course Baby-Doll.
May notice that some of the mentioned ones are also villain focused...and there is a reason why, as this series set a gold standard for setting up villains with realistic motives, and actually gave them depth beyond "you are going to die".
MAX goes by the production order. This one was forced to be the first producers to be the first one because Batman Returns came out so they wanted Catwoman on for ratings
Heart of ice and feat of clay are pretty iconic. Jokers favor ages like a fine wine. Beware the Grey Ghost is also pretty iconic. Or mask of the phantasm (although thats a movie)
Shady is reacting to *Batman TAS???* Oh hell YES PLEASE!!! (R.I.P Kevin Conroy) 😎😎😎
Thanks for the great reaction as always Shady and hug your furbabies all 💙🐱💙
The BTAS series was influeced by the Burton Batman movie and I think Selina's hair color was blonde because of Michelle Pfeiffer. Apparently, this Selina was just dying her hair though and it is naturally black.
I honestly like the blonde hair, then again I've always had a thing for blondes.
IIRC, The in universe reason she stopped dying her hair was cause the company was testing there dye on cats.
Here ya go, Shady. Let me pay for you to get a season of one of the DCAUs on CZcams.

@@yarc9 Don't be.
@@BrandontheAwesome why it coming out
fun fact lol part 1's overseas animation was done by the same studio behind gundam and cowboy bebop
One of the other studios that worked on BTAS, TMS, also worked on Akira among many other shows and movies.
@@RadiaUmbra yup! There’s also Studio Junio, who did the animated opening in Sonic CD, as well as several episodes of Dragon Ball Z
This series also redefined Mister Freeze as a major tragic character and introduced Harlequin.
BTAS is out of order on Max, the first episode is actually On Leather Wings
No one gonna talk about how the cars all look like they're from the 50s, but the time is clearly in the 80s to 90s
Gotham just be like that.
The random henchmen also use a lot of Tommy guns, too.
More like cars from the 30s, which the film noir style was based on.
it's a mix of times.. there's black and white TVs and giant room-filling supercomputers.
It's like it's a theming thing. Or something.
I started watching this show again myself recently. Haven't seen a single thing of it in over 20 years.
Ten episodes in I was ready to declare it's not only a better show than any superhero trash Marvel and DC are shoveling out these day, it's better than 80-90% of modern television and movies in general.
Edit: In response to that feeling of the show starting at median's rest instead of doing the origin out of the gate, frankly I prefer that. Between the comics and other media when I was a kid, I'd say it's actually pretty good odds that I've seen Batman's parents get shot more times than I saw my own parents kiss. Same with Uncle Ben for Spiderman. Everyone knows these stories already and retreading them is very tiresome for long-time fans, I would think, because it definitely is for me.
Red Claw is played by Kate Mulgrew, Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager
Yup, long before anyone knew who she was.
Makes sense, Red Claw didn't mess around.
So she went from being a terrorist to having a crew that's about half terrorirsts.
The lantern prints flaking your silver playbutton looks SOOO dope.
Just to note: while these were the first two episodes to air, they were not the first two episodes in the production order. I believe part one was the 15th episode produced, but I could be wrong. I think the first episode produced was actually the introduction of Man-Bat, and there should at least have been one or two Joker episodes prior to The Cat and The Claw. This should explain why some aspects feel like they belong at a later point in the series
Animated series' often launched with what they felt were the strongest episodes, not the first ones completed or first ones produced, the Simpsons Christmas episode was the launch pilot, but was the 7th or 8th produced.
I am vengeance...I am the night...
*I AM...SHADY!!!!!*
I AM VENGEANCE! I AM THE KNIGHT! I AM BATMAN! -Kevin Conroy
Ignoring the fact that the production order and air dates for the episodes didnt line up perfectly...
This show is pretty much like Star Trek in that you can watch like 90% of the episodes of any given season out of order and it not affect your viewing experience whatsoever.
Episodic is the term you're looking for.
18:14 Yes you do have to make them cat-themed, they're 'catrops' /badum-tish

Mystery Batman Theater 3000. I love it.
Also Selina had Isis on her shoulder when she jumped, lost Isis when Batman had to save her. The episode really shows just how rough it is being Selina’s cat.
And she claims she loves animals, lol.
Dude I’m an 80:90 baby. That is by far one
Of the sickest cartoon intros in existence!!
I remember The Creeper from BTAS.
He was the precursor to Freakazoid!
He deserved more screentime! I love the Creeper!
5:40 If you REALLY want Batman's origins in this universe, watch Mask of the Phantasm, one of the best DCAU films.
Batman: The Animated Series is one of the best shows I've ever seen. I watched it as a kid and it's the full reason why I love Batman so much now. The episode with the Penguin breaks my heart. It's always the one I think of when this show comes up.
Technically, while this is the first episode to air, this is NOT the first episode of BTAS. In the production order, “On Leather Wings” is the first episode and I HIGHLY recommend it.
@ShadyDoorags In Batman TAS, Batman does joke around a little bit, it depends on the tone of the episode. Try the episode where Batman helps a priest convince a drug kingpin to stop dealing or the episode with homeless men being enslaved by a mining company, the character is a lot more serious in those.
Well, on the DVD its "On Leather Wings" is the first episode. And thats why Epilogue reference it at the end.
"Nothing to Fear" is an excellent episode.
Oh yeah, the episodes with Scarecrow are my favorites
On leather wings was the first episode of BTAS
It wasn't the first one aired. Us animation frequently used the strongest episodes to launch a series. Another example is the 1st Simpsons Christmas episode, it was supposed to be later in the run and the killer babysitter would have been the first, but the Christmas one was a much stronger one to launch on.
I know. But I think the production order, at least from what I've seen, was On Leather Wings first. I think this episode was done first to help promote Batman Returns
Technically speaking, while this is the first episode that premiered, this isn't the first episode from a chronological stand point. The first episode chronologically speaking is "On Leather Wings", and while it's not an origin episode, it's still early enough in Batman's career that people don't really know who Batman is and if they can really trust him.
Fun thing about B-man, you can make him 'sort of new' at any point you want, even if he's been doing it for years, because you can just say he was sticking to the shadows and remaining somewhat of an urban myth up to that point.
Glad we got another Shady reacts, this was great
New Shady video drops, you drop everything and watch.
I don’t make the rules.
I think Catwoman is indeed the person who kicked off the sharp claws cut glass cliché. Earliest I can remeber her doing it is in her debut episode in Batman (1966).
The reason that she is blonde here is to connect her to Michelle Pfeiffer. But at the same time, they started with Catwoman to differentiate her from from the movie version. She's a thief and animal rights activist, not a zombie after the old boss who killed her.
I’ve been rewatching this show so it’s funny that you put out this video. Some of these episodes are insane man, excited for you to talk about them.
Never seen the man himself and love the setup. The Hal Sinestro artwork is golden!
"We got guns!" "So?"
Best line
This episode was the first to air because Warner wanted it to parallel with Batman Returns. This is also why Selina is blonde instead of brunette, because of Michelle Pfeiffer's version of Catwoman
They blew up the bank as a distraction, so police and fire fighters will be occupied so the robbers can make an easier escape. To me, it also kinda foreshadows that even the basic bad guys or henchmen in BTAS do unnecessary things like lightning fires, planting bombs, or even torturing someone just to cause more harm. There is an episode with the introduction of Clayface, Daggett has some issues with Clayface, so he told his henchmen to kill and dispose of the body(implied). Instead, they hold down and torture Clayface by force feeding him chemicals, and they dump his body in his car, which was parked behind Daggett factory. The bad guy in the show ain't so clever, but it shows the extra steps they'd take just to do evil things.
I like your analysis videos but this was alot of fun to watch along side you.
Truth be told, I barely remember Batman TAS either.
17:16 That is the most Siamese black cat I've ever seen.
Dude, nice Green Lantern portraits on either side of your CZcams play button wall.
This might've been the 1st episode aired, but the actual 1st episode is leather wings. Watch it, and you’ll see that for sure.
That being said, it's great you’ll be experiencing the thrill ride that is BTAS. Looking forward to seeing more videos on this, especially on the best episodes.
I did not know i needed shady reaction videos and now i need more 😂(obviously only if you feel like it shady any content from you is always the highlight of my day)
Shady watch this show as you feel, but id like to let you know there is a rewarding watch order for the DCAU. There's the network order and the production order. The production order is how the episodes were written and if there is any continuity between episodes its more obvious with the production order. I say all this because the actual "first" BTAS episode is "On Leather Wings". This is why the BB episode of JLU parallels it.
It really would have been nice if JLU had ended there and had that perfect symmetry, buuuut the last season was actually really good so nevermind heh.
@@KairuHakubi The result of never knowing when you get the can
Selina is blonde in this show due to the at the time recent film, Batman returns. They were told to model a lot of things in the show off of the movies at the time. It is just hair dye l, her hair is actually black
Honestly, there are so many episodes I could recommend, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’d love a full series reaction where you react to each episode or set of joint episodes like you did here. I adore BTAS and I loved your reactions to this, and think it could be a fun Shady series to look forward to in addition to your other great content :)
Your animation style got really detailed in this video, looks just like real life! Excellent work, my friend.
° TAS' Selena was always blonde.
° Shady, as someone who's a former private pet-sitter, who's worked for someone who had MULTIPLE black cats, I can tell you that they DO look different.
° Bruce drove himself frequently. It was part of his charm.
° "Cat-tropes!| 😆
° "I _think_ Bruce Wayne can afford the fine.
° I doubt the reflection would be that clear. I've had glass tables & the reflections were never THAT clear…it could still kinda work, though.
° Yeah. the early part of Batman TAS was a little more "campy" than the rest of it or the later series, but it was still excellent. It wasn't NEARLY as bad as the 1960s version.
“Beware the Gray Ghost” is a good parallel to Justice League’s “Legends” as it features the Gray Ghost who inspired Bruce and is based off the real character of the Shadow. I would recommend it.
I grew so accustomed to the cartoon shady, that I just can't even put the voice to the person EVEN THOUGH HIS PROFILE PICTURES IS HIM.
20:12 "I should never trifle with the affections of a woman until next time, so next time I will trifle with your feelings" got a chuckle out of me.
24:15 Reminds me of my favourite bit from Batman the Brave and the Bold, where he answered Man-face with "The hammers of justice are unisex" referring to his fists obviously
9:34 ....is his forehead blushing 💀? What's going on there
28:04 "time to go on the hunt" better pun
Batman, Superman, BB and Ben 10. I’m sold!

The first episode is On Leather Wings.
dude, you did a pretty decent kevin conroy as batman impression
5:50 Superman TAS literally opens with a three-parter about his origin. And so does Justice League, actually. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes too.
14:10 Like you said, he wants to flex, he doesn't want his dad here to ruin the mood.
18:29 And that's why it's not the first. The first one has Man-Bat in it, so double bat... men.
I will forever say how unique and cool it was the bad guys had real guns (even if they did have horrible aim) and some laser pew-pews. They got aroudn the censors on that cause of the weird setting of the show that often looks like it's in 1930's or something and the goons basically have Tommy guns and it'd be much harder for kids to find those laying around.
Also bit of a thing with Selena's cat Isis, while they make the cat look Black she's supposed to be an Egyptian hairless
The tas series is so amazing no matter how many times I go through it.
Another banger of an episode. Keep up the great work, friend!
"The Forgotten" is an interesting episode that gets into Bruce's head and has Alfred leaving the manor and cave to help.
BB 54. I thought that was a reference to The Brave & the Bold #54, but that's the first appearance of the original Teen Titans. Never mind.
8:48 Since this came out the same year as Batman Returns they modeled her character design based off Michelle Pfeiffer. They kept Silena's green eyes from the comic books.
Oh man this is great. Looking forward to more of this, and seeing you react to some Beyond episodes.

Catwoman: Never trifle with a woman's feelings...until next time!

Ayo we getting even more Shady content? Hell yeah!
There are so many interesting episodes. There is more I don’t remember off the top of my head though.
Awesome! This was really fun, I hope you do more reactions :)
To me, there's a holy quartet of top-tier animated shows in the 90s for me. Batman TAS is one, obviously, but the others are ReBoot, Gargoyles and Animaniacs. Utter gold, all of them 😊
I think his origins is explored in the movie Mask of the Fantsasm
A lot of shows in the 90s and to some extent today have explicitly said "we didn't want to go over the origin again (At least right away) because there is/was/was going to be a movie showing it, and we didn't feel the need to double down on that, even if ours isn't the same continuity." and that makes sense.
Phantasm
You mean
@@user-gj9uq3kb7y yeah, that's it!
24:38 - I feel like it's a show-writer's double entendre: while Red Claw (of course) means herself (because she's egotistical and presupposes that she got away during a difficult and/or impossible situation that means that Batman is now defeated by her), the show-writers are trying to use that line to convey that Selina Kyle/Catwoman is Batman's match.
The Man Bat episode is first in production order, I believe. BUT, I distinctly remember The Cat and the Claw 2 parter being the primetime premier of the series. The show originally ran during the evenings for a little while.
In the scene where Gordon is arguing with the general, it sounds like the army is blaming Gotham PD for not doing anything when the virus(?) was stolen, and Gordon is saying, "How could we help if you didn't tell us anything?"
batman's batwing-shaped handcuffs???
Okay yeah I'm gonna need you to do the full series on an off and on basis I enjoyed this immensely I enjoy seeing someone experience B: TAS for the first time quite a bit and your jokes you add to it are pretty funny mystery science theater stuff
This was good😂, please do another one when you can. It still can be Batman TAS.
I loved this show as a kid and now
8:46 in the original series she was blond and blue eyes
In the new animated series they gave her black hair
I thought the TAS in the title stood for tool assisted speedrun and was confused for a sec
Robin's Reckoning parts 1 and 2 would make an excellent reaction or review. It not only is probably one of the best adaptions of Robin's origins, it's also a good episode that shows the relationship between Bruce and Dick (before it got ruined with the episode "Old Wounds" 🙄). Plus, you've already made it clear in previous reviews that Dick Grayson is your favorite DC character, why would you NOT want to do a video on that 😂
The rare cat color is probably supposed to be either blue (a deep solid grey) or a smoke color (black or grey at the tip, but white at the root)
I want more of these - This is hilarious XD
