The key to heavy metal was discovering that angrer is a positive energy, but Sabbath own the discovery that fear and loathing is also a good ingredient in the soup. The magic being catharsis or maybe a warp spasm of reightous vengeance against the inhuman and enslaving forces of the machine! Note also that the looping loop the trance-like element fits in with the celtic music style. But made darker like a spell.

To anyone trying to emulate Geezer's tone, it's nigh impossible because you aren't Geezer Butler, but you can come pretty damn close by playing aggressively over the fret board with your right hand (and when I say say aggressively, I *mean* it, Geezer had some incredible endurance in his right hand because he's basically knocking the snot out of those strings) and using a P-Bass with the tone rolled about 80% the way off. Something people might also fight me on is the type of strings. Closest thing to his sound I've ever achieved was with medium gauge D'Adario flatwound strings, but it's most likely he's using rounds, so in regards to which strings you use I suppose just run whatever sounds right.

Cheeto it’s likely he did, the crunchy high end he has certainly sounds like the voice of a J bass’ neck pickup, but perhaps it’s just my P letting me get a closer approximation to his sound. The thing is every bass kinda has its own mojo, every bass is wired with different stuff, even if they’re wired in the same way. No two j basses will sound entirely identical. Hell, no two pickups will ever sound entirely identical. The best advice I can give to anyone trying to emulate their hero’s is to throw the idea of gear defining anything right out the friggin window and really study their technique. THAT’S where a musician’s voice comes from.

Geezer Butler did what Cliff did in 1983, 14 years later with the starting riff on N.I.B (it's not played on the guitar at the beginning after the bass solo).
Cliff perfected what Geezer was trying to do in 1969 though.

I recognised his paranoid line from a commercial for his bass at the end of this video..but it has certain hiss to it like in his old recordings...did you enhance that and if so, what did you do?

God I hate when people constantly compare musicians as if there’s some great hierarchy. Different genres and styles that set these musicians apart.

95% of his tone is in his hands. Doesn't matter what bass he's playing, or what he's playing it through, Geezer always sounds like Geezer.

      30+yr bassist here.
It's usually a p-bass with overdriven tube amps, but geez played with his right hand up on the fretboard instead of by the pickups, that's a huge part of this tone..
Try it and you'll see, the old beat-club vids show this early technique
